A cooling device configured to lift a portion of a protective vest away from a body of a wearer of the protective vest, the cooling device comprising: a collar portion configured to be placed around a neck of the body of the wearer; a plurality of front inflatable members coupled to a first section of the collar portion; a plurality of rear inflatable members coupled to a second section of the collar portion; a first inflation tube coupled to the plurality of front inflatable members and configured to controllably carry a first portion of a substance to inflate and deflate the plurality of front inflatable members and the first section of the collar portion; and a second inflation tube coupled to the plurality of rear inflatable members and configured to controllably carry a second portion of the substance to inflate and deflate the plurality of rear inflatable members and the second section of the collar portion.
2. The cooling device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of front inflatable members is a pair of front inflatable members configured to be worn on the front of the wearer of the protective vest.
3. The cooling device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of rear inflatable members is a pair of rear inflatable members configured to be worn on the back of the wearer of the protective vest.
4. The cooling device of claim 1, further comprising: a first retainer configured to retain the first inflation tube on the collar portion of the cooling device; and a second retainer configured to retain the second inflation tube on the collar portion of the cooling device.
5. The cooling device of claim 4, wherein at least one of the first and second retainers is a retaining clip.
6. The cooling device of claim 4, wherein at least one of the first and second retainers is a hook-and-loop fastener.
7. A cooling device configured to be worn under a protective vest, the cooling device comprising: a pair of shoulder straps; a plurality of front inflatable members coupled to the pair of shoulder straps and configured to be worn under a front side of the protective vest; and a plurality of rear inflatable members coupled to the pair of shoulder straps and configured to be worn under a rear side of the protective vest, wherein a first inflatable member of the plurality of rear inflatable members is coupled to a second inflatable member of the plurality of rear inflatable members via an air bridge, wherein the plurality of front inflatable members and the plurality of rear inflatable members are filled with a cooling material, and wherein the plurality of front inflatable members is separately inflatable from the plurality of rear inflatable members via a three-way valve.
8. The cooling device of claim 7, wherein the cooling material is water.
9. The cooling device of claim 7, wherein the cooling material is ice.
10. The cooling device of claim 7, wherein the cooling material is a heat absorbing, non-water material.
11. The cooling device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of front inflatable members is separately inflatable from the plurality of rear inflatable members.
12. The cooling device of claim 11, further comprising a three-way valve coupled to the first inflation tube, the second inflation tube, and an inflation source, wherein based at least in part on an orientation of the three-way valve, either the plurality of front inflatable members or the plurality of rear inflatable members is coupled to the inflation source.
13. The cooling device of claim 4, wherein first and second retainers are coupled to the collar portion of the cooling device on a same side as the plurality of front inflatable members.
14. The cooling device of claim 1, further comprising an air bridge, wherein a first inflatable member of the plurality of rear inflatable members is coupled to a second inflatable member of the plurality of rear inflatable members via the air bridge.
15. The cooling device of claim 1, wherein the substance to inflate and deflate the plurality of front inflatable members includes a cooling material.
16. The cooling device of claim 15, wherein the cooling material is water.
17. The cooling device of claim 15, wherein the cooling material is antifreeze.
18. The cooling device of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of the front inflatable members includes a plurality of inflatable pockets arranged parallel to one another.
19. The cooling device of claim 1, further comprising a pair of shoulder straps, at least a portion of the pair of shoulder straps forming the collar portion of the cooling device, wherein each of the shoulder straps includes a plurality of air channels arranged parallel to one another.
20. The cooling device of claim 12, wherein the inflation source is a hand pump.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
[0023] Directing attention to
[0024] Also shown in
[0025] In an embodiment, separate mouthpieces 108 and valves 110 are used to separate inflatable members 102 worn on the back of person 10 from inflatable members 102 worn on the front of person 10 so that person 10 can ride in a vehicle comfortably, with inflatable members 102-3 and 102-4 deflated while inflatable members 102-1 and 102-2 remain inflated on the chest of person 10.
[0026] To maintain inflatable members 102 in a vertical orientation, a two-part positioning member 112 can be included between inflatable members 102-1 and 102-2 on the front of person 10 as well as between inflatable members 102-3 and 102-4 on the back of person 10. Two-part positioning member can be a semi-rigid material, such as flexible strap made from plastic or other suitable material, that maintains a desired distance between inflatable members 102-1 and 102-2 or 102-3 and 102-4. A plurality of locking positions can be included by placing a series of apertures on one part of positioning member 112 and a fastener on the other part of positioning member 112, so that different body sizes and shapes can be accommodated while maintaining inflatable members 102 in an optimal, vertical orientation for maximum ventilation.
[0027] Returning to
[0028] Directing attention to
[0029] While the present invention preferably uses the breath of person 10 to inflate inflatable members 102, it is possible to fill inflatable members with liquid and freeze them, to provide additional cooling properties. Similarly, cool water can be used if ice is too uncomfortable. In a different embodiment, heat-absorbing liquid such as antifreeze may be used to fill inflatable members 102.

[0032] Directing attention to
[0033]
[0034]
[0035] With the increased cooling of a person that the ventilation apparatus of the present invention provides by providing a space between his or her body and a protective vest, the wearer is more comfortable and can focus his or her attention on the immediate surroundings and provide better protection for himself or herself, as well as more attention on the people they are sworn to protect.
[0036] While a ventilation apparatus with inflatable members for use with a protective vest has been illustrated and described in the best mode of the preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that numerous changes and modifications can be made to embodiments of the present invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
