Abstract
A venous access port assembly (10) having a housing base (28) with a discharge port (16), a septum (14) and a cap (48). An interior reservoir (22) is defined by a well (30) in the housing base and a bottom (62) of the septum, and a passageway (20) extends from the reservoir through the discharge port (16). The housing base (28) is provided with radiopaque markings (60) on the bottom wall (44) thereof, including radiopaque indicia (70) that identify an attribute of the assembly (10) after its implantation and clearly appear on an X-ray of the patient in a manner informing the radiologist or technologist and the medical practitioner of that particular attribute.
Claims
1-11. (canceled)
12. A venous access port assembly, comprising: a housing comprising a housing base defining at least one reservoir with a passageway extending from the at least one reservoir through a stem of a discharge port, wherein at least a portion of the housing comprises material that is at least one of radiotransparent and radiotranslucent; and, at least one radiopaque marking that is at least one of provided in a portion of the housing and provided on the portion of the housing.
13. The assembly recited in claim 12, wherein the at least one radiopaque marking further includes radiopaque indicia that is at least one of provided in the portion of the housing and provided on the portion of the housing base.
14. The assembly recited in claim 12, wherein the at least one radiopaque marking comprises marking fluid that is applied onto a surface of the housing base.
15. The assembly recited in claim 14, wherein the marking fluid is embossed or imprinted onto the surface of the housing base.
16. The assembly recited in claim 12, wherein the housing base has a bottom outer surface and the at least one radiopaque marking is at least one of provided in the bottom outer surface and provided on the bottom outer surface.
17. The assembly recited in claim 12, wherein the at least one radiopaque marking comprises foil.
18. The assembly recited in claim 12, wherein the at least one radiopaque marking comprises film.
19. A venous access port assembly, comprising: a housing comprising a well having a bottom floor and side walls that define an internal reservoir, the housing further comprising a housing base made of needle-impenetrable material and a discharge port leading to a passageway that extends from the internal reservoir; and, radiopaque material that is at least one of provided in a portion of the housing and provided on the portion of the housing.
20. The assembly recited in claim 19, wherein the bottom floor is convex.
21. The assembly recited in claim 19, wherein the bottom floor is elevated toward a center of the internal reservoir.
22. The assembly recited in claim 19, wherein the radiopaque material is at least provided on an inwardly facing surface of the side walls.
23. The assembly recited in claim 19, wherein at least a portion of the housing is at least one of radiotransparent and radiotranslucent.
24. The assembly recited in claim 19, further comprising at least one of a radiotransparent material molded around the housing base and a radiotranslucent material molded around the housing base.
25. A venous access port assembly, comprising: a housing comprising: a housing base defining at least one reservoir; a discharge port extending from a portion of the housing; and, a passageway extending from the at least one reservoir to the discharge port; and, at least one marking that is at least one of provided in a portion of the housing and provided on the portion of the housing, the at least one marking being discernible under x-ray examination and providing information regarding at least one of a location of the discharge port and that the access port assembly is rated for power injection.
26. The assembly recited in claim 25, wherein the at least one marking comprises radiopaque material.
27. The assembly recited in claim 25, wherein at least a portion of the housing comprises a material that is at least one of radiotransparent and radiotranslucent.
28. The assembly recited in claim 25, wherein the housing base comprises a septum seat.
29. The assembly recited in claim 28, further comprising a needle-penetrable septum placed within the reservoir.
30. The assembly recited in claim 29, further comprising skirt overmolded about the housing base.
31. The assembly recited in claim 30, wherein at least one of the housing base, the septum, and the skirt is at least one of radiotransparent and radiotranslucent.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0014] Certain terminology is used herein for convenience only and is not to be taken as a limitation on the present invention. The terms distal and proximal refer, respectively, to directions closer to and away from the insertion tip of a catheter in an implantable catheter assembly. The terminology includes the words specifically mentioned, derivatives thereof and words of similar import. The embodiments illustrated below are not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise form disclosed. These embodiments are chosen and described to best explain the principle of the invention and its application and practical use and to enable others skilled in the art to best utilize the invention.
