Abstract
A cartridge with component bullet has desirable penetration capabilities and controlled separation of components upon terminal impact. In embodiments of the invention, the cartridge comprises a component, a lead core, and a copper jacket. The lead jacket having a leading edge portion that exposes the cutaways. The component bullet may have a forward pointed ogive portion with cutaways spaced circumferentially.
Claims
1. A pistol cartridge comprising a cartridge casing with open mouth and an interior, propellant in the interior of the cartridge casing, and a bullet secured in the mouth of the cartridge casing, the bullet comprising: a forward component, the forward component having a forward ogive portion with a forward tip, a plurality of circumferentially distributed cutouts on the forward component rearward of the forward tip; a core component positioned rearwardly of the forward component; and a jacket defining a cup, the forward component and core portion seated in the cup, the jacket having a leading edge portion extending around the forward component and positioned at the plurality of circumferentially distributed cutouts providing a plurality of forward facing open regions between the forward component and the leading edge portion at each of the plurality of circumferential distributed cutouts enhancing the initiation of the opening of the jacket on impact.
2. The pistol cartridge of claim 1 wherein the core comprises lead, the lead positioned rearwardly of the forward component in the cup, the forward component in direct contact with the lead core and having a projection extending into the lead core.
3. The pistol cartridge of claim 1, wherein the forward component has a mid portion adjoining, rearward and unitary with the forward ogive portion, and a tail portion adjoining, rearward and unitary with the mid portion, wherein the leading edge portion terminates at the mid portion rearward of the forward ogive portion.
4. The pistol cartridge of claim 1 wherein the forward component comprises steel.
5. A pistol cartridge comprising a cartridge casing with open mouth and an interior, propellant in the interior of the cartridge casing, and a bullet secured in the mouth of the cartridge casing, the bullet comprising: a forward component having a forward ogived portion with a forward tip, a mid portion, and a tail portion, the ogived portion having cutouts spaced circumferentially around the ogived portion to open the jacket upon impact; and a jacket formed of copper and defining a cup, the forward component seated in the cup, the jacket having a forward taper and a forward edge portion; a lead core positioned rearwardly of the forward component in the cup.
6. The pistol cartridge of claim 5, wherein the cutouts extend rearwardly of the forward ogived portion and radially inward from the forward edge portion of the jacket.
7. The pistol cartridge of claim 6, wherein the jacket and the forward component define a forward facing scoop area at each of the cutouts.
8. The pistol cartridge of claim 7, wherein each cutout extends the full axial length of the mid portion.
9. The pistol cartridge of claim 6, wherein the mid portion is cylindrical or conical and the leading edge of the jacket is positioned at the mid portion.
10. The pistol cartridge of claim 5, wherein a leading edge portion that includes the leading edge has a reverse tapered surface defining a circumferential scoop.
11. The pistol cartridge of claim 5, wherein the forward component is a material other than steel.
12. The pistol cartridge of claim 1, wherein the forward component is a material other than steel.
13. A pistol cartridge comprising a cartridge casing with open mouth and an interior, propellant in the interior of the cartridge casing, and a bullet secured in the mouth of the cartridge casing, the bullet comprising: a jacket formed of copper and defining a cup, the jacket having a leading edge portion; a forward component in the jacket and having a forward ogived portion with a central forward tip, a mid portion directly rearward of the forward ogived portion, the forward component having a plurality of circumferentially spaced flutes radially inward of the leading edge portion of the jacket for opening the jacket on impact; and a core comprising lead directly rearward of the forward component in the jacket.
14. The pistol cartridge of claim 13, wherein the mid portion is conical or cylindrical.
15. The pistol cartridge of claim 13, wherein each of the flutes extend the axial length of the mid portion.
16. The pistol cartridge of claim 13, wherein each flute provides a forward scoop area.
17. The pistol cartridge of claim 13, wherein the leading edge portion of the jacket has a reverse tapered surface providing further forward scoop area.
18. The pistol cartridge of claim 13, wherein the forward component has a projection extending into the core comprising lead.
19. The pistol cartridge of claim 13, wherein the forward component is made from a material other than steel.
20. The pistol cartridge of claim 13, wherein the jacket tapers inwardly toward the leading edge portion.

(32) Referring to 2, 5A-6E, and 8, the jacket has a leading edge portion 51, a leading edge 52, and a reverse tapered surface 52.2 that may be a frustoconical concave surface. In embodiments, the leading edge is separated from the steel component such that a recess 53, in embodiments a V-shaped recess, in cross-section, faces forward defining a circumferential scoop. One leg of the V is directly in line with the axis 53.3 of the bullet as well as the trajectory path. The V-shaped recess promotes opening of the jacket when the bullet impacts fluidic material which then urges the jacket to open, essentially by hydraulic force. The opened jacket can release the steel component and also the lead core increasing the damage imparted to the target.
