Abstract

Compounds of the formula I ##STR00001## in which R.sup.1 is alkyl or alkoxy in which CH.sub.2 groups are optionally replaced, and X.sup.1 is alkyl OCF.sub.3, CF.sub.3, CHF.sub.2, OCF.sub.2CF.sub.3, CCF.sub.2CHFCF.sub.3, OCFCF.sub.2, OCHCF.sub.2 or F, a liquid-crystalline medium containing a compound of formula I, and use thereof in electro-optical liquid-crystal displays, in particular in TN, STN, TN-TFT, OCB, IPS, PS-IPS, FFS, HB-FFS or PS-FFS-, positive VA displays and in shutter spectacles for 3D effects and LC lenses.

Claims

1. Shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays containing in said shutter spectacles, LC lenses or positive VA displays, a nematic liquid-crystalline medium, comprising in said nematic liquid-crystalline medium: one or more compounds of formula I, ##STR00434## in which R.sup.1 denotes a straight-chain alkyl radical having 3 to 5 C atoms, and X.sup.1 denotes CF.sub.3; and further comprising: one or more compounds of formulae II and/or III, ##STR00435## in which A denotes 1,4-phenylene or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, a denotes 0 or 1, R.sup.3 denotes alkenyl having 2 to 9 C atoms, and R.sup.4 denotes an alkyl radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, wherein at least one CH.sub.2 group is replaced by CHCH, and optionally one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00436## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, or C.sub.1-15 alkyl in which one or more CH.sub.2 group is replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00437## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen; or one or more compounds of formulae X and/or XI, ##STR00438## in which ##STR00439## each, independently of one another, denote ##STR00440## R.sup.0 denotes an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00441## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, cycloalkyl with 3 to 6 C atoms, X.sup.0 denotes F, Cl, a mono- or polyfluorinated alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 6 C atoms, a mono- or polyfluorinated alkenyl or alkenyloxy radical having 2 to 6 C atoms, and Y.sup.1-4 each, independently of one another, denote H or F; or one or more compounds of formulae D1, D2, D3, D4 or D5, ##STR00442## in which R.sup.0, X.sup.0 and Y.sup.1-Y.sup.2 independently have one of the meanings as defined above; or one or more compounds of formulae Y-1, Y-2, Y-3 or Y-4, ##STR00443## in which R.sup.2A denotes H, an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00444## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, L.sup.1 and L.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denote F, Cl, CF.sub.3 or CHF.sub.2, Z.sup.2 and Z.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denote a single bond, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2, CHCH, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, CH.sub.2O, OCH.sub.2, COO, OCO, C.sub.2F.sub.4, CFCF or CHCHCH.sub.2O, p denotes 0, 1 or 2, q denotes 0 or 1, (O)C.sub.vH.sub.2v+1 denotes OC.sub.vH.sub.2v+1 or C.sub.vH.sub.2v+1, and v denotes 1 to 6; or one or more compounds of formulae CR, PH-1, PH-2, or BS, ##STR00445## in which R.sup.B1, R.sup.B2, R.sup.CR1, R.sup.CR2, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denotes H, an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00446## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, and c denotes 0, 1 or 2.

2. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises one or more compounds of formulae II and/or III.

3. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 2, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises one or more compounds of the following formulae, ##STR00447## ##STR00448## in which R.sup.3a and R.sup.4a each, independently of one another, denote H, CH.sub.3, C.sub.2H.sub.5 or C.sub.3H.sub.7, and alkyl denotes a straight-chain alkyl group having 1 to 8 C atoms.

The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium additionally comprises one or more compounds of formulae IV to VIII, ##STR00449## in which R.sup.0 denotes an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00450## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, cycloalkyl with 3 to 6 C atoms, X.sup.0 denotes F, Cl, a mono- or polyfluorinated alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 6 C atoms, a mono- or polyfluorinated alkenyl or alkenyloxy radical having 2 to 6 C atoms, Y.sup.1-6 each, independently of one another, denote H or F, Z.sup.0 denotes C.sub.2H.sub.4, (CH.sub.2).sub.4, CHCH, CFCF, C.sub.2F.sub.4, CH.sub.2CF.sub.2, CF.sub.2CH.sub.2, CH.sub.2O, OCH.sub.2, COO, CF.sub.2O or OCF.sub.2, in the formulae V and VI also a single bond, and r denotes 0 or 1.

5. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 4, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises one or more compounds of formula V which is selected from compounds of the formulae Va to Vj, ##STR00451## ##STR00452##

6. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 4, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises one or more compounds of formula VI which are selected from compounds of the formulae VI-1a to VI-1d, ##STR00453##

7. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 4, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises one or more compounds of formula VI which are selected from compounds of the formulae VI-2a to VI-2f, ##STR00454##

8. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 4, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises one or more compounds of formulae X and/or XI.

The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium additionally comprises one or more compounds of formula XII, ##STR00455## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denote C.sub.1-9-alkyl, C.sub.2-9-alkenyl, C.sub.1-9-alkoxy, C.sub.1-9-oxaalkyl, C.sub.1-9-fluoroalkyl or C.sub.2-9-alkenyloxy.

The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 4, wherein the liquid crystalline medium additionally comprises one or more compounds of formulae XIII to XVI, ##STR00456## in which R.sup.0 denotes an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00457## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, cycloalkyl with 3 to 6 C atoms, X.sup.0 denotes F, Cl, a mono- or polyfluorinated alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 6 C atoms, a mono- or polyfluorinated alkenyl or alkenyloxy radical having 2 to 6 C atoms, and Y.sup.1-2 each, independently of one another, denote H or F.

11. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium additionally comprises one or more compounds of formulae ##STR00458##

12. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises one or more compounds of formulae D1, D2, D3, D4 or D5.

13. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises one or more compounds of formulae Y-1, Y-2, Y-3 or Y-4.

14. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises one or more compounds of formulae BC, CR, PH-1, PH-2, BF or BS.

15. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises 1-30% by weight of compounds of the formula I.

16. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium additionally comprises one or more UV stabilizers and/or antioxidants.

17. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium additionally comprises one or more polymerizable compounds.

18. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein in the liquid crystalline medium R1 is propyl.

19. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the medium has a rotational viscosity, .sub.1, of <120 mPa.Math.s.

20. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium comprises one or more compounds of formulae X and/or XI.

21. The shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystalline medium additionally comprises one or more compounds of formulae XIII to XVI, ##STR00459## in which R.sup.0 denotes an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00460## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, cycloalkyl with 3 to 6 C atoms, X.sup.0 denotes F, Cl, a mono- or polyfluorinated alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 6 C atoms, a mono- or polyfluorinated alkenyl or alkenyloxy radical having 2 to 6 C atoms, and Y.sup.1-2 each, independently of one another, denote H or F.

22. Shutter spectacles having 3D effects, LC lenses or positive VA displays, comprising in said shutter spectacles, LC lenses or positive VA displays a nematic liquid-crystalline medium, comprising in said nematic liquid-crystalline medium: one or more compounds of formula I, ##STR00461## in which R.sup.1 denotes a straight-chain alkyl radical having 3 to 5 C atoms, and X.sup.1 denotes CF.sub.3; and further comprising: one or more compounds of formulae II and/or III, ##STR00462## in which A denotes 1,4-phenylene or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, a denotes 0 or 1, R.sup.3 denotes alkenyl having 2 to 9 C atoms, and R.sup.4 denotes an alkyl radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, wherein at least one CH.sub.2 group is replaced by CHCH, and optionally one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00463## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, or C.sub.1-15 alkyl in which one or more CH.sub.2 group is replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00464## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen; or one or more compounds of formulae X and/or XI, ##STR00465## in which ##STR00466## each, independently of one another, denote ##STR00467## R.sup.0 denotes an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00468## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, cycloalkyl with 3 to 6 C atoms, X.sup.0 denotes F, Cl, a mono- or polyfluorinated alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 6 C atoms, a mono- or polyfluorinated alkenyl or alkenyloxy radical having 2 to 6 C atoms, and Y.sup.1-4 each, independently of one another, denote H or F; or one or more compounds of formulae D1, D2, D3, D4 or D5, ##STR00469## in which R.sup.0, X.sup.0 and Y.sup.1-Y.sup.2 independently have one of the meanings as defined above; or one or more compounds of formulae Y-1, Y-2, Y-3 or Y-4, ##STR00470## in which R.sup.2A denotes H, an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00471## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, L.sup.1 and L.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denote F, Cl, CF.sub.3 or CHF.sub.2, Z.sup.2 and Z.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denote a single bond, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2, CHCH, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, CH.sub.2O, OCH.sub.2, COO, OCO, C.sub.2F.sub.4, CFCF or CHCHCH.sub.2O, p denotes 0, 1 or 2, q denotes 0 or 1, (O)C.sub.vH.sub.2v+1 denotes OC.sub.vH.sub.2v+1 or C.sub.vH.sub.2v+1, and v denotes 1 to 6; or one or more compounds of formula BS ##STR00472## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denotes H, an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00473## in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may be replaced by halogen, and c denotes 0, 1 or 2.

23. (2) The electro-optical data are measured in a TN cell at the 1st minimum (i.e. at a d.Math.n value of 0.5 m) at 20 C., unless expressly indicated otherwise. The optical data are measured at 20 C., unless expressly indicated otherwise. All physical properties are determined in accordance with Merck Liquid Crystals, Physical Properties of Liquid Crystals Status November 1997, Merck KGaA, Germany, and apply for a temperature of 20 C., unless explicitly indicated otherwise.
