METHOD FOR POLARIZATION COMPENSATION AND FREE-SPACE OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR AIRCRAFT

    Abstract

    A method for polarization compensation includes: (a) generating at least one beam of an electromagnetic wave; (b) sending the at least one beam through a physical medium; (c) receiving the at least one beam of an electromagnetic wave after it has traversed the physical medium; (d) measuring the intensity of the electromagnetic wave after it traverses a system of electromagnetic retarders; (e) determining the polarization of the electromagnetic wave after it traverses the system of electromagnetic retarders; (f) calculating the positions of the electromagnetic retarders to match the determined polarization of the electromagnetic wave with the polarization of the generated electromagnetic wave; and (g) compensating the effect of the physical medium on the polarization of the electromagnetic wave by setting the electromagnetic retarders according to the calculated positions.

    Claims

    1. A method for polarization compensation comprising: generating at least one beam of an electromagnetic wave; sending the at least one beam through a physical medium; receiving the at least one beam of an electromagnetic wave after the at least one beam traverses the physical medium; measuring an intensity of the at least one beam after the at least one beam traverses a system of electromagnetic retarders; determining a polarization of the at least one beam after the at least one beam traverses the system of electromagnetic retarders; calculating positions for the electromagnetic retarders in the system to match the determined polarization with a polarization of the at least one beam before the sending of the at least one beam through the physical medium; and compensating for an effect of the physical medium on the polarization of the at least one beam of the electromagnetic wave by setting the electromagnetic retarders according to the calculated positions.

    2. The method according to claim 1, wherein optical properties of the system of electromagnetic retarders are parametrized with Mueller matrices.

    3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the Mueller matrices of the system of electromagnetic retarders are determined for different temperature ranges and for different wavelengths.

    4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the generating the at least one beam of the electromagnetic wave includes generating a reference beam and a second beam, wherein the reference beam and second beam differ in amplitude and frequency.

    5. The method according to claim 4, wherein: the reference beam is an optical communication beam or an optical beacon beam, and the second beam is a single photon optical beam.

    6. The method according to claim 4, wherein the polarization of the reference beam is measured, and the polarization of the second beam is compensated for.

    7. The method according to claim 6, wherein the polarization of the reference beam is measured right after the reference beam traverses through a single electromagnetic retarder of the system of the electromagnetic retarders.

    8. The method according to claim 4, wherein the reference beam and the second beam differ in frequency by more than 100 nm.

    9. The method according to claim 1, wherein the polarization of the electromagnetic wave is parametrized with a Stokes vector.

    10. A communication system comprising: a receiver device configured to receive at least one beam of an electromagnetic wave from a physical medium; an analysis module, configured to determine a polarization of the electromagnetic wave received by the reader device; and a polarization compensation module, which is configured to modify the polarization of the received electromagnetic wave, the polarization compensation module including a system of at least three electromagnetic retarders.

    11. The communication system according to claim 10, wherein the polarization compensation module comprises a number of at least three electromagnetic retarders of arbitrary types.

    12. The communication system according to claim 10, wherein the polarization compensation module comprises half-wave plates and is devoid of quarter-wave plates.

    13. The communication system according to claim 11, wherein the system of electromagnetic retarders consists of achromatic electromagnetic retarders.

    14. The communication system according to claim 10, wherein the analysis module further comprises at a polarimeter or a combination of a photodiode and a polarizer.

    15. An aircraft comprising the communication system according to claim 10.

    16. A method for polarization compensation comprising: generating at least one electromagnetic beam; passing the at least one electromatic beam through a physical medium; receiving the at least one electromagnetic beam after the at least one electronic beam passes through the physical medium; sending the at least one electromagnetic beam through electromagnetic retarders after the passing of the at least one electromagnetic beam through the physical medium, measuring an intensity of the at least one electromagnetic beam after the at least one electromagnetic beam passes through electromagnetic retarders; determining a polarization of the at least one electromagnetic beam after the electromagnetic beam passes through the electromagnetic retarders; calculating positions of the electromagnetic retarders based on the determined polarization of the at least one electromagnetic beam; and adjusting the electromagnetic retarders to conform to the calculated positions.

    17. The method of claim 16, wherein the calculating of the positions includes matching the determined polarization with a polarization of the at least one electromagnetic beam before the passing through the physical medium.

    18. The method according to claim 16, wherein the generating at least one beam of an electromagnetic bam includes generating a reference beam and a second beam, wherein the reference beam and second beam differ in amplitude and frequency, wherein the step of determining the polarization is performed using the reference beam, and the method further comprises compensating a polarization of the second beam by the adjusting of the electromagnetic retarders.

    19. The method according to claim 18, wherein the reference beam and the second beam differ in frequency by at least 100 nm.

    20. The method according to claim 16, wherein the polarization of the electromagnetic beam is parametrized with a Stokes vector.

    DESCRIPTION OF EXEMPLARY EMBODIMENTS

    [0045] FIG. 1 shows a flowchart of a method M for polarization compensation according to one embodiment of the invention. In one step M1, an electromagnetic wave with a certain polarization is generated by a sender, and in a further step M2 it is sent through a physical medium, which can comprise e.g. air, glass, fibre or a combination thereof. The electromagnetic wave is received in a step M3 after it has travelled through the physical medium. While going through the medium, the polarization with which the electromagnetic wave was emitted gets distorted and changes. In a further step M4, the intensity of the received electromagnetic wave is measured after it passes through a system of electromagnetic retarders. Once the intensity of the wave is measured, in a step M5 the polarization of the received electromagnetic wave is determined. In some of the embodiments, the polarization of the wave is characterized with a Stokes vector, whose parameters can be extracted from measurements of the intensity. In a further step M6, a position of the electromagnetic retarders is calculated, in order that the effect of the electromagnetic retarders compensates the distortion on the polarization of the electromagnetic wave caused by the physical medium. This is possible if the electromagnetic retarders are characterized e.g. with their associated Mueller matrices, such that their optical properties are known. The calculation therefore indicates how the electromagnetic retarders should be rotated, such that they revert the polarization distortion that the electromagnetic wave suffered while traveling through the physical medium. In another step M7, a polarization compensation is performed and the electromagnetic retarders are rotated according to the calculation. In this new configuration of the electromagnetic retarders, the polarization state of the emitted electromagnetic wave is recovered. The electromagnetic retarders may include waveplates, birefringent optical fibers, liquid crystal modulators and/or fiber-based compensators in various combinations.

    [0046] FIG. 2 shows a schematic block diagram of a communication system 100 according to one embodiment of the invention. The communication system 100 comprises a receiver device 10, an analysis module 20 and a polarization compensation module 30.

The characterization can be optionally done for several wavelengths and different temperatures, such that the setup has the versatility to be applied to different wave frequencies and in different environmental conditions. The characterization information contained in the Mueller matrices can be stored in a database, which can be physically inside the computing unit 31 or in a cloud storage, from where it can be retrieved.

    [0058] With the wave plates WP1, WP2, WP3 characterized with Mueller matrices, the positions (i.e. the rotations) of the wave plates can be optimised in order to measure the polarization state P2 and encode this information in the form of a Stokes vector. The analysis module 20 is configured to perform this measurement, which relies on the characterization of the optical properties of the wave plates, not on their nominal behaviour. In this way, the arrangement of wave plates WP1, WP2, WP3 shown in FIG. 3 can be used for a precise measurement of the polarization P2 instead of a traditional arrangement of a quarter-wave plate and a polarizer, which relies heavily on the quality standards of the quarter-wave plate and the polarizer and is, for this reason, more expensive.

    [0059] Once the polarization P2 has been measured and the effect of the wave plates WP1, WP2, WP3 is known, the effect of the physical medium on the polarization P1 can be inferred. New wave plate positions are calculated, e.g. with an optimization algorithm, such that when an electromagnetic wave W is emitted with polarization P1, the polarization P2 that one determines after the electromagnetic wave W travels through the physical medium and through the wave plates WP1, WP2, WP3 is the original polarization P1.

The optimized position of the wave plates WP1, WP2, WP3, which takes into account the frequency of the waves and the temperature conditions of the physical medium, is configured such that after passing through them, all the electromagnetic waves get back to their initial polarization state, i.e. their polarization is described by SO(H), SO(V), SO(D1), SO(D2), SO(R) and SO(L).

    [0065] As mentioned above, if the second electromagnetic wave W2 is a quantum wave, i.e. it is a weak wave consisting of few photons or even a single photon optical wave, its polarization cannot be detected with a conventional polarizer without hampering the wave. FIG. 4 shows, according to some embodiments of the invention, that in this case the first electromagnetic wave W1, which is a classical optical wave, can be measured, e.g. by a polarization analyser 24. The trajectory of the first electromagnetic wave W1 is modified with a reflective prism R1 and then partially reflected (and partially refracted) by a prism R2. With this information, the wave plates WP4, WP5, WP6 can be rotated such that the polarization distortion caused by the medium is compensated for with respect to both electromagnetic waves W1, W2. The original polarization P3 of the second electromagnetic wave W2 can therefore be recovered without hampering the electromagnetic wave W2.
