Abstract
A plate for securing two bone segments in a tibial plateau levelling osteotomy procedure having a body with an elongate distal portion and a proximal portion extending laterally and a plurality of apertures for receiving fixing means wherein at least two of the apertures are adapted to receive fixing means and at least one of the said apertures is adapted to receive a removable plug which extends proud of the bone-facing surface. One of the apertures has a camming surface configured such that upon insertion of the fixing means the bone fragments are urged together thereby promoting healing without deleterious compression of the surface of the bone.
Claims
1. A plate for securing two bone segments in a tibial plateau levelling osteotomy procedure comprising a body having a longitudinal axis, a bone-facing surface and an outer surface, opposed to the bone-facing surface, and further comprising an elongate distal portion and a proximal portion and a plurality of apertures wherein at least two of the apertures are adapted to receive fixing means and at least one of the said apertures is adapted to receive a removable plug which extends proud of the bone-facing surface.
2. A plate for securing two bone segments in a tibial plateau levelling osteotomy procedure comprising a body having a longitudinal axis, a bone-facing surface and an outer surface, opposed to the bone-facing surface, and further comprising an elongate distal portion and a proximal portion and a plurality of apertures wherein at least two of the apertures are adapted to receive fixing means and wherein at least one of the said apertures has a removable plug disposed in the aperture that extends proud of the bone-facing surface.
3. A plate according to claim 1 wherein two or more of the said apertures has a removable plug disposed in the aperture that extends proud of the bone-facing surface.

A plate according to any one of the preceding claims wherein at least one of the apertures adapted to receive fixing means comprises a camming surface and is configured to enable the transmission of a force applied to the fixing means in a direction parallel to the plane of the plate surrounding the aperture upon insertion of the fixing means.
5. A plate according to claim 4 in which the at least one aperture is a slot and is located in the distal portion of the plate.
6. A plate according to claim 4 or claim 5 in which two apertures are slots, orthoganol to each other and disposed in the distal portion.

A plate according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the bone-facing surface of the body is contoured such that, in use, the body snugly overlies the tibia and tibial fragment in an alignment in which the longitudinal axis of the plate is parallel or preferably coincident with the longitudinal axis of the tibia.
8. A plate according to any one of the preceding claims having from five to ten apertures.
9. A plate according to any one of the preceding claims wherein three of the said apertures has a removable plug disposed in the aperture that extends proud of the bone-facing surface.
10. A plate according to any one of the preceding claims wherein at least one of the apertures for receiving the removable plug comprises inter-engagement means, preferably a screw thread.
11. A plate according to claim 10 wherein at least one of the plugs comprises a plug having a screw thread adapted to inter-engage with the screw thread of the aperture.
12. A plate according to claim 11 wherein two apertures in the proximal portion have removable plugs located therein and one aperture in the distal portion has a plug located therein.
13. A plate according to any one of the preceding claims in which the plugs protrude not more than 5 mm.
14. A plate according to any one of the preceding claims which comprises at least two apertures for receiving locating means for positioning the plate on the bone.
15. A plate according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the plurality of apertures comprises a first plurality of fixing apertures adapted to receive fixing means in the distal portion and a second plurality of apertures adapted to receive fixing means in the proximal portion.
16. A plate according to claim 15 wherein the first plurality of apertures is disposed in a generally longitudinal arrangement, parallel or coincident with the longitudinal axis of the body.
17. A plate according to claim 15 or claim 16 wherein the first plurality of apertures comprises at least one slot, one plate positioning aperture and at least two other apertures.
18. A plate according to any one of claims 15 to 17 wherein the slot is aligned in a direction facing the lateral lobe of the proximal portion, preferably aligned on a radius through the intercondylar tibial eminence.
19. A plate according to any one of claims 15 to 18 wherein the slot intersects the curvilinear locus and is generally perpendicular to a tangent on the curvilinear locus at the intersection.
20. A plate according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the second plurality of apertures is suitably disposed towards the periphery of the proximal portion.
21. A plate according to any one of the preceding claims dimensioned for use with a small canine, medium canine or large canine.
22. A plate for securing two bone segments in a tibial plateau levelling osteotomy procedure comprising a body having a longitudinal axis, wherein the body comprises an elongate distal portion and a proximal portion and is shaped such that a first edge of the distal portion and a first edge of the proximal portion together form a linear edge which extends along the length of the body and is generally parallel to the longitudinal axis wherein the body comprises a first plurality of fixing apertures adapted to receive fixing means in the distal portion and a second plurality of apertures in the proximal portion.
23. A plate according to claim 22 having at least one removal plug disposed in an aperture.
24. An orthopaedic apparatus comprising a plate as defined in any one of claims 1 to 23 in combination with fixing means.
25. A method of carrying out a TPLO procedure after positioning a tibial fragment adjacent to a tibia from which the fragment has been cut comprising positioning a plate according to any one of claims 2 to 23 on the tibia and tibial fragment with the plug engaging the surface of the bone securing the plate to the tibia and tibial fragment using fixing means by approximate placement of the plate using locating means, insertion of fixing means and removal of the plug and insertion of a screw in an aperture comprising a slot to configure the tibia and fragment into abutting relationship.
