Abstract
Non-sealing casing shear rams are utilized in a blow out preventer (BOP) for shearing or cutting casing, but do not seal. The BOP with non-sealing casing shear rams with V-shaped blades has the shearing capabilities of a larger shear ram BOP while utilizing a smaller sized BOP to reduce the need for additional time, expense, and equipment. The non-sealing casing shear ram BOP may be used for drilling operations and during production without the need for swapping a larger shear ram BOP used for drilling to a smaller shear ram BOP for operations. The V-shape blade and back rake angle of the non-sealing casing shear ram blades produce the shearing force of the larger BOP in a smaller sized BOP.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0023] Detailed descriptions of the invention are provided herein. It is to be understood, however, that the present invention may be embodied in various forms. Therefore, specific details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but rather as a basis for the claims and as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to employ the present invention in virtually any appropriately detailed system, structure, or manner.
[0024] Shearing ram BOPs that are 13? are widely available with the capability of shearing 6? tubulars. However, the capability to shear 9? casing with a 13? BOP is not currently possible with prior art BOP shear rams. This is because prior art BOPs that have the shear rams with the capability of shearing 9? casings are larger than 13? such as 18? BOPs which increases the complexity of the BOP stack to be used. This in turn results in an increase in the overall cost and time necessary to install for drilling operations.

[0026] Upper shear ram 2 and lower shear ram 4 are complementary whereby both rams 2,4 are the same size and shape. The upper shear ram 2 engages or slips over lower shear ram 4 during closing operations. The V-shape of the upper blade 10 and lower blade 12 assist to guide or urge a tubular or casing 8 (see

[0032] In a preferred embodiment, the shear ram blade V angle 14 of the blades is 35 degrees. The V-angle 14 of the blade 10, 12 can vary from about 7? to 45 degrees. Additionally, in a preferred embodiment the back rake angle 16 of the blade 10,12 is 20 degrees with respect to a vertical line such as centerline 51 (see

[0035] As another way of looking at it, 9? is 70.6% of 13?. Thus the present invention permits cutting casing with an outer diameter at least 70% of the inner diameter of the nominal borehole through the ram.
[0036] The upper and lower non-sealing casing shear rams 2,4 have a V-angle 14 which is between 30 and 40 degrees and the back rake angle 16 is between 15 degrees and 35 degrees. In one embodiment, the V-shape angle 14 is between 33 and 38 degrees and the back rake angle 16 is between 15 degrees and 25 degrees. In one preferred embodiment, the angle of the V-shape 14 is 35 degrees, and the back rake angle 16 is approximately 20 degrees. The angle of the V-shape 16 is identical for the upper and lower non-seal casing shear rams 2,4. The rake angle 16 is the same for the upper and lower non-seal casing shear rams 2,4. The V-shaped upper ram cutter blade 10 for the upper casing shear ram 2 is a mirror image of the V-shaped lower ram cutter blade 12 for the lower casing shear ram 4.
[0037] The V-shaped cutting blades 10, 12 on the upper and lower non-sealing casing shear rams 2, 4 cover the entire diameter 26 of the nominal bore 6 as shown in
[0038] The foregoing description of the preferred embodiments of the invention has been presented for purposes of illustration and description only. It is not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise form disclosed; and obviously many modifications and variations are possible in light of the above teaching. Such modifications and variations that may be apparent to a person skilled in the art are intended to be included within the scope of this invention as defined by the accompanying claims.
