Abstract
An in-mouth barrier against entry of insects, pollen and particulates in to the open mouth of a user, particularly in strenuous outdoor exercises, needs to be comfortable and fully effective for various extents of an agape mouth, and ideally should require no conscious effort to re-position in even long exercise durations. A filter frame surrounding a screen is formed to the dental arch so as to envelope both rows of teeth except possibly the molars. A flange on the frame holds the frame on the mandibular teeth and prevents the frame from moving down. The end of the flange lies under the tip of the tongue and prevents the frame from moving up. The frame thus remains comfortably inside the vestibule and covers the mouth for the various extents it may be opened to.
Claims
1. An apparatus, for breathing through the mouth wherein the apparatus is positioned inside the mouth, comprising a more or less flat frame with an opening.
2. The frame of claim 1, comprising two longer side elements joined at their ends by two shorter side elements framing the said opening, not all side elements necessarily being of the same cross section and no outer edge of the cross sections being angles.
3. The frame of claim 2, wherein there is an indentation in the middle of the outer edge of the said longer side elements.
4. The frame of claim 3, including an element, whose cross section is more or less that of a tape, whose width in a preferred embodiment is less than the combined width of the average mandibular incisors and whose thickness is more or less equal to the minimum of the thicknesses of the said side elements of claim 2, rises into the said opening of claim 1 from the middle of the edge adjacent to one of the said indentations.

The element of claim 4, wherein the said element rises a distance more or less equal to one-half the maximum average height of a mandibular incisor, then proceeds away from the frame of claim 1 more or less perpendicularly a distance greater than the thickness of the incisor edges, then smoothly curves back in the direction of the said side element from which it arose as in claim 4, and proceeds a distance more or less equal to one-half the distance of the rising, thereby having produced a bend that is more or less in the shape of a U.

The element of claim 5, wherein the distal end now continues in a smooth curve away from the frame; the said curve having a length that is more or less equal to twice the height of the said bend above the said frame of claim 2 and the distal end of the smooth curve lying more or less tangentially to the plane perpendicular to the surface of the said frame of claim 1.
7. The element of claim 6, wherein it has an end; the said end has a smooth indentation in the middle; the depth of the indentation is more or less equal to half the distance of the said rising in claim 5 so that the end forms two smooth lobes without sharp corners.
8. The frame of claim 1, wherein the said frame is formed to conform to the dental arches; the flange of claim 4, claim 5, claim 6, and claim 7 lies in the concave side of the said formed frame.
9. The flange of claim 8, wherein the said flange is integrally attached to the frame of claim 1.
10. The flange of claim 8, wherein the said flange is removably coupled to the frame of claim 1.
11. The frame of claim 1, wherein the said frame surrounds a surface that serves as a filter of insects and particulates.
12. The surface of claim 11, wherein the surface is integrally attached to the frame of claim 1.
13. The surface of claim 11, where the surface is removably coupled to the frame of claim 1.
14. The frame of claim 8 is positioned inside the mouth by engaging the mandibular incisors with the said bend of claim 5 so that the distal end of the said flange of claim 8 lies under the tip of the tongue and the said lobes of claim 7 lie astride of the inferior lingual frenulum.
15. A longer side in claim 2, wherein the said side may be of such thickness as to serve as a bite-guard for the mandibular teeth; including a flat element proceeding from the frame, away from the inner side near the bottom of the said longer side, and then bending away smoothly from the said frame of claim 1 and proceeding to lie in the plane that is more or less perpendicular to the plane of the frame of claim 1, and having a bifurcation of the said flat element into two lobes as in claim 7, is another embodiment of the invention of claim 1.
16. The flange of claim 8, wherein there is a hole straddling the said smooth curve is yet another embodiment of the invention of claim 1.
17. The flange of claim 15, wherein there is a hole in the said flat element is yet another embodiment of the invention of claim 1.

[0040] In broad embodiment, the present invention is an in-mouth filter which is an in-mouth insect screen that prevents insects and particulates from entering an open mouth regardless of how wide the mouth is open during strenuous exercise, wide meaning the distance from the incisal edge of the maxillary central incisors to the incisal edge of the mandibular central incisors at the midline. In this respect, the device for filtering breathed air according to the present invention substantially departs from the conventional concepts and designs of the prior art, and in doing so provides an apparatus primarily developed for the purpose of preventing insects and particulates from riding or flowing in to an open mouth.
