Abstract
A cutter comprising two members each having a handle portion and an operative portion. The two members are pivoted together at a pivot located between the handle portion and the operative portion of each of the said two members so that the members are movable relative to one another about the pivot. The cutter further comprises at least one releasable cutter blade on the operative portion of one of the said two members. The two members are pivoted together releasably about a pivot pin of the pivot. The or each cutter blade is formed with an aperture through which extends the pivot pin.

3. A cutter according to claim 2, wherein the blade and portions of the said one of the said two members surrounding the recess thereof have surfaces which are flush with one another.
4. A cutter according to claim 1, wherein the said at least one cutter blade and the said operative portion of one of the said two members are provided with respective interengaging portions.
5. A cutter according to claim 4, wherein the said interengaging portions comprise a ridge and a slot.
6. A cutter according to claim 1, wherein the pivot pin is provided with a screw with a screw head to hold the said two members together.
7. A cutter according to claim 1, wherein the pivot pin comprises a separate part which can be inserted through respective pivot holes of the said two members.
8. A cutter according to claim 7, wherein the said separate part is flanged.
9. A cutter according to claim 1, wherein such a cutter blade is also provided on the operative portion of the other of the said two members.
10. A cutter according to claim 1, wherein the said two members are identical to one another.
11. A cutter according to claim 1, wherein the operative portion of the other of the said two members constitutes an anvil to enable the cutter to perform an anvil cutting action.
12. A cutter according to claim 1, wherein the pivot pin is integral with one of the said two members.
13. A cutter blade for a cutter as claimed in claim 1, having an aperture to enable such a pivot pin to extend through it.
Description
[0027] An example of a cutter embodying the present invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

[0037] Each operative portion 18 is provided with a blade recess 22 which is complementary in shape to either one of the replaceable blades 12. The interior of the base of each blade recess 22 is formed with a ridge 24 of dovetail cross-section which acts as a locating guide for its associated replaceable blade. A circular through-hole 26 extends through each member 14 at a handle end of the recess 22 therewithin. A hinge or pivot pin 28 extends through the through-holes 26 to define a pivot about which the two members 14 are moveable relative to one another. The pivot pin 28 is formed with a flange 30 which engages the outerside of one of the members 14 when these parts are assembled together. A screw 32 having a head 34 is screwed into an internal screwthread within the pin 28 once the pin 28 has been inserted through the holes 26 of the two members 14, so that the screw head engages the outerside of the member 14 which is further from the flange 30, so that the pin 28 with the screw 32 hold those members 14 together in such a manner that they can be moved relative to one another about the pin 28.
[0038] A slot 34 of dovetail cross-section (corresponding to the dovetail cross-section of the ridge 24) on one side of each replaceable blade 12 engages the ridge 24 of the associated recess 22 when the cutter is in its assembled condition thereby to locate the blade 12 in the recess 22. Thus when a blade is inserted into its associated recess, an end of the ridge 24 may be inserted into an end of the slot 34, and the blade may then be slid accurately into its associated recess 22. Each replaceable blade 12 is also provided with a circular aperture in the form of a circular through-hole 36 at an end thereof which is closer to the handle portion 16 of its associated member 14. The through-hole 36 is of the same diameter as the through-hole 26. It will be appreciated that when each blade 12 is in place and the cutter 10 is assembled with the pin 28 extending through the through-holes 26 and 36 and with each ridge 24 received within the associated slot 34, the surface of each member 14 that is closest to the other member 14 and which surrounds the recess 22 is flush with a surface of the blade 12 received in that recess 22. The interrengaging ridges 34 and slots 24 provide further mechanical support for the blades 12 when the cutter is in use and further mechanical support is obtained through the hinge pin 28 as this keeps the replaceable blades 12 at the optimum pressure for effective cutting.
[0039]
[0040]
[0041] When the cutter 10 is in use, the hand grips 20 are opened apart a little so as to separate portions of the sharpened edges 40 of the blades 12. These edges are then placed on opposite sides of a cable which is to be cut, and the hand grips 20 are squeezed together, causing the members 14 to move towards one another about the pivot pin 28 so as to close the spacing between the sharpened edges 40 of the blade 12 and thereby to cut the cable by a shearing cutting action.
[0042]
[0043] In the modification shown in
[0044] A set of different replaceable cutter blades 12 may be provided with a range of hardness treatments, so that the versatility of the cutter tool is made available to the user since with such a set it can be used for different cutting requirements.
[0045] Numerous variations and modifications to the illustrated constructions may occur to the reader familiar with the art without taking the resulting device outside the scope of the present invention. For example the hand grip 20 of the handle portion 16 can be made from a range of materials, including but not limited to electrically insulating material, for example, carbon fibre, ensuring further protection from high voltages. Instead of the hinge or pivot pin 28 extending through respective through-holes 26 in the members 14, one of those through-holes of one of the members 14 may be an internally screwthreaded blind hole (not shown) with the hinge or pivot pin 28, in this case being provided with an external screwthreading, extending through the through-hole 26 of the other of the members 14 into screwthreaded engagement with the blind hole of the one of the members 14.
[0046] Materials from which the blades 12 may be made are steel, ceramic, titanium, or tungsten carbide, for example. The material of the blades 12 may have a Rockwell hardness in the range from 55 to 85.
