Abstract
A rollator having an auto brake system made of a rigid frame assembly, a pair of forward facing swivel wheels, a pair of rearward facing non-swivel wheels, a pair of support handles, a pair of momentary electrical switches, a seat member, a back-rest member and a pair of electro-mechanical brake assemblies. The electro-mechanical brake assemblies are mounted on the frame assembly just above each rearward facing non-swivel wheel. The momentary electrical switches are mounted on the support handles. The brake assembly is actively engaged when the momentary electrical switches are not pressed and unengaged when the momentary electrical switches are pressed by the user. A preferred embodiment includes a pair of LED lights mounted on the front end of each the support handle, the LED lights being aimable by the user.
Claims
1. A mobility assistance device comprising: a rigid frame assembly; a wheel rotatably mounted at a bottom end of the frame; one or more support handles located at a top end of the frame; one or more momentary electrical switches, wherein each switch is located proximate a respective one of the support handles; and an electro-mechanical brake assembly located proximate the wheel and adapted to engage the wheel to inhibit rotation and electrically connected with and controlled by the electrical switch, wherein said brake assembly is engaged to inhibit rotation when said momentary electrical switch is not actuated and wherein said brake assembly is unengaged to allow rotation when said momentary electrical switch is actuated by a user.
2. The device of claim 1, further comprising one or more of a seat member, a back-rest member, and a carrying compartment connected with the frame.
3. The device of claim 1, further comprising one or more forward facing swivel wheels rotatably mounted at the bottom end of the frame.
4. The device of claim 1, further comprising one or more friction plates mounted at the bottom end of the frame.
5. The device of claim 1, wherein the wheel comprises two rear facing non-swivel wheels rotatably mounted at the bottom end of the frame and adapted to rotate parallel with one another.
6. The device of claim 1, wherein the switch comprises an actuator grip located below the respective handle, wherein the actuator grip is adapted to be gripped by a user when the user holds the handle.
7. The device of claim 1, further comprising an electric power source electrically connected with the switch and the brake assembly, wherein when no electrical power is provided by the power source, the brake assembly is engaged to inhibit rotation.
8. The device of claim 7, wherein the electrical power source is a portable battery.
9. The device of claim 1 further comprising one or more LED lights mounted on front ends of respective ones of the support handles, wherein said LED lights are aimable by the user.

The device of claim 1 wherein said electro-mechanical brake assembly comprises: a servo motor including a shaft electrically connected with the switch; a first linkage member attached to the shaft; a second linkage member attached to said first linkage member; a linear bearing assembly mounted to the frame; and an elongate post attached to said second linkage member, wherein said post is slidably retained in the linear bearing assembly and positioned to engage with the wheel to inhibit rotation.
11. The device of claim 10, wherein the wheel comprises one or more depressions positioned to rotate proximate the linear bearing and wherein, when the brake assembly is engaged, the post to extends from the linear bearing assembly and engages with one of the depressions.
12. The device of claim 10, wherein the post comprises a brake pad and, when the brake assembly is engaged, the post extends from the linear bearing and presses the brake pad against a surface of the wheel.
13. The device of claim 10, further comprising a spring, wherein when no electrical power is applied to the servo motor, the spring provides a force to the post to engage with the wheel to inhibit rotation.
14. The device of claim 1, further comprising a pedometer, wherein the pedometer measures a distance traversed by the user operating the device.
15. The device of claim 14, wherein the pedometer comprises a rotation counter coupled with the wheel, wherein the distance traversed is measures by counting rotations of the wheel.
16. The device of claim 15, wherein the rotation counter comprises one or more of an optical sensor, and a magnetic sensor.
17. The device of claim 1, wherein the one or more electrical switches and one or more handles comprise two electrical switches located proximate two respective handles.
18. The device of claim 17, wherein actuation of either one or both of the two switches causes the brake assembly to disengage the wheel to allow rotation.
19. The device of claim 17, wherein only actuation of both of the switches causes the brake assembly to disengage the wheel and allow rotation.
