Abstract
A protected tumbler lid with a protective cap for use with a beverage tumbler. The protected tumbler lid includes a tumbler lid with an upper portion and a lower portion that includes a sealing gasket that can be pressed into the mouth of a tumbler to fit snugly and prevent leakage past the sealing gasket. It also includes a protective cap that covers the upper portion of the tumbler lid when the protective cap is in a closed position. A spring-biased hinge is connected to both the protective cap and to the tumbler lid. The spring-biased hinge enables pivoting of the protective cap between the closed position and an open position. The protective cap of the protected tumbler lid substantially protects the top and side of the tumbler lid from accumulating dust, grass clippings, and/or insects that ordinarily would find their way onto the top surface of the tumbler lid.
Claims
1. A coverable tumbler lid for use with a beverage tumbler, the coverable tumbler lid comprising: a tumbler lid configured to be inserted into an open mouth of a tumbler including: an upper portion forming a lid ring, the lid ring having an inner and outer surface, a top and a bottom lid rim, the lid ring supporting a lid member having top and bottom planar surfaces that sealably extend circumferentially from the inner surface of the lid ring, the lid member including a drinking hole formed through the top and bottom planar surfaces, the lid member being disposed in a plane between the upper and lower lid rims of the lid ring such that access to the drinking hole is provided in a plane below the upper lid rim, wherein portions of the inner and outer surface, the top lid rim, and the top surface of the lid member, which are located proximally to the drinking hole, are configured to form drinking surfaces of the upper portion that are configured to be in contact with the mouth and lips of a user when drinking liquid disposed in the tumbler through the drinking hole; and a lower portion that includes a lid gasket, wherein when the lower portion of the tumbler lid is inserted into a tumbler, the lid gasket of the lower portion is configured to sealably engage circumferentially with an inner surface of the tumbler to prevent liquid disposed therein from leaking past the lid gasket; and a protective cap hingedly coupled to the tumbler lid and configured to be pivotably rotated between a closed position to which the protective cap is biased, and at least one open position that permits drinking access to the drinking hole in the lid member, the protective cap including a cap gasket located on a bottom surface of the protective cap and configured to make sealable contact with the top rim of the lid ring when in the closed position, the protective cap being configured to overlay all drinking surfaces of the upper portion when in the closed position.
2. The coverable tumbler lid of claim 14, wherein the protective cap includes a finger tab, in communication with the hinge, the finger tab coupled to the hinge and configured to receive a force sufficient to overcome the bias of the hinge to rotate the hinge and thereby open the protective cap to the at least one open position.
3. The coverable tumbler lid of claim 14, wherein the protective cap includes an opening tab located distally from the hinge, configured to receive a force sufficient to overcome the bias of the hinge to lift open the protective cap to the at least one open position.
4. The coverable tumbler lid of claim 3, wherein the opening tab is located along the cap side portion of the protective cap, and directly opposite the location of the spring-biased hinge.
5. (canceled)
6. The coverable tumbler lid of claim 1, wherein the cap gasket is made from one of: silicone, rubber, or flexible plastic.
7. The coverable tumbler lid of claim 4, wherein the upper portion of the tumbler lid includes an attachment element, and the spring-biased hinge is attached to the upper portion of the tumbler lid at the attachment element.
8. The coverable tumbler lid of claim 1, wherein the finger tab is configured with the spring-biased hinge so that the at least one open position of the protective cap is an angle of no more than 135 degrees with respect to the closed position.
9. The coverable tumbler of claim 1, wherein the tumbler lid includes a sliding cover that is configured to open and close the drinking hole.
10. The coverable tumbler lid of claim 1, wherein the lid gasket is made from one of: silicone, rubber, or flexible plastic.
11. The coverable tumbler lid of claim 13, wherein the cap side portion extends perpendicularly at least one quarter inch from the circumferential edge of the protective cap.
12. The coverable tumbler lid of claim 13, wherein the cap side portion circumferentially overlays the outer surface of the lid ring for at least half of the lid ring's circumference, including all drinking surfaces of the lid ring of the upper portion when the protective lid is in a closed position.
13. The covered tumbler lid of claim 1, wherein the protective cap, when in the closed position, is configured to overlay at least a portion of the outer surface of the lid ring by a cap side portion that extends perpendicularly from a circumferential edge of the protective cap.
14. The covered tumbler lid of claim 1, wherein the protective cap is hingedly coupled to the tumbler lid using a spring biased hinge, the hinge being mounted to the upper portion of the tumbler lid and configured to bias the protective cap to the closed position.
15. The covered tumbler lid of claim 14, wherein the protective cap can rest in the at least one open position by a detent.
16. The covered tumbler lid of claim 15, wherein the lower rim of the lid ring rests against a top rim of a tumbler defining the open mouth when the covered tumbler lid is fully inserted into the open mouth of the tumbler.
