    DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0040] A pet securing device 1 comprises a holder 10 for retaining a retractable pet lead and a post 12 for inserting into the ground, as shown in FIG. 1.

[0041] The holder 10, shown in isolation in FIGS. 3 to 5, comprises an opening 14 for receiving a retractable pet lead. The holder 10 comprises substantially planar front and rear walls 16, 18, and curved side walls 20, 22. The holder 10 is adapted to receive any conventional retractable lead that comprise planar front and rear walls and curved side walls. The side walls 20, 22 and front and rear walls 16, 18 extend up from the base 24 of the holder 10, and act to securely hold a lead in place.

[0042] In use, a user inserts a retractable lead into the opening 14 in the holder, such that the handle portion of the retractable lead extends above the top 26 of the holder.

[0043] The left side wall 20 is shorter than the right side wall 22. This may allow a retractable dog lead to be provided in a first orientation or a second orientation.

[0044] The pet securing device 1 comprises a releasable strap 28 for securing a lead in place in the holder 10. An example of a releasable strap 28 is shown in FIG. 7. A first end of the strap 28 comprises an over-moulded catch 30, which is receivable in a strap retaining means 32 on the front wall 16 of the holder 10. The strap retaining means 32 comprises an aperture 34 for receiving the catch 30. The catch 30 comprises resilient members 36 that are biased apart from each other, so that when the catch 30 is inserted through the aperture 34 in the strap retaining means 32, the resilient members 36 engage the walls of the strap retaining means 32 to retain the catch 30 in the aperture 34. A user may press the resilient members 36 together in order to release the catch 30 from the strap retaining means 32.

[0045] The strap 28 is formed of a flexible material, and in use may extend from the strap retaining means 32, over the top 26 of the holder 10, to a strap adjustment retainer 38 that is provided on the rear wall 18 of the holder 10. The strap 28 may extend through a space in the retractable pet lead, for example between the handle and the housing of a retractable pet lead, in order to secure the pet lead in the holder 10.

[0046] Towards the second end of the strap 28 there is provided a plurality of sloping projections 40 along a length of the strap 28, forming a ratchet. The strap adjustment retainer 34, shown in FIGS. 3 to 5, comprises an aperture 42, through which the second end of the strap 26 may be inserted, and an retaining portion 44 having projections for engaging one or more of the projections 40 on the strap, to hold the second end of the strap 28 in place. The projections on the engaging portion 44 engage the projections 40 on the strap 28 such that the strap 28 may be further pulled through the aperture 42 in a first direction, towards the base 24 of the holder, but may not be pulled through the aperture 42 in a second direction, opposite to the first direction, without disengaging the retaining portion 44 from the projections 40 on the strap. The strap 28 may be tightened by pulling the second end of the strap 28 further through the aperture 42.

[0047] The top end 26 of each of the front and rear walls 16, 18 comprises a cut-out portion 48, 50 positioned above and extending towards the strap retaining means 32 on the front wall 16 and the strap adjustment retainer 34 on the rear wall 18. The cut-out portions 48, 50 allow the strap 26 to be tightened when a smaller retractable lead is inserted in the holder 10, wherein the space between the handle and the housing of the retractable lead does not project above the top 26 of the holder 10.

[0048] A first slot 52 is provided in the left side wall 20 of the holder 10 and a second slot 54 is provided in the right side wall 22 of the holder 10, shown in FIGS. 2, 4 and 5. The first slot 52 extends from the top of the left side wall 20 towards the base 24 of the holder 10. The second slot 56 extends from the top of the right side wall 22 towards the base 24 of the holder 10. In use, the tape of a retractable lead may extend through the first slot 52 or the second slot 54. The feature of each of the slots extending down the side wall towards the base 24, and there being provided a slot on the left side wall and the right side wall provides the holder with the capability of holding a variety of different types of retractable leads, wherein the housing has different shapes, and the tape extends from different regions of the housing.

[0049] The holder 10 comprises a connection portion 56, provided at the base 24 of the holder 10, for connecting the holder 10 to the post 12. The holder 10 also comprises a securing clip 58, for releasably securing the holder 10 to the post 12, shown in FIGS. 3 and 5. The connection portion 56 is substantially cylindrical.

[0050] The post 12 is a stake for inserting into the ground. The post 12 comprises a spike 60, which insertable into the ground, and a head 62, which is provided above the ground in use. The connection portion 56 is hollow and fits over the head 62 of the post 12.

[0051] The securing clip 56 comprises a flange 64 that is receivable into an annular groove 66 in the head 62 of the post 12, to secure the holder 10 to the post 12. The holder 10, when attached to the post 12, is rotatable relative to the post 12, about the axis of the post 12. As the holder 10 rotates relative to the post 12, the flange 64 of the securing clip 56 moves around the annular groove 66 in the post 12, thereby securing the holder 10 to the post 12.

[0052] The securing clip 56 comprises an actuator 70, which, when pressed, removes the flange 64 from the annular groove 66, so that the user may detach the holder 10 from the post 12.

[0053] The holder 10 is separable from the post 11. A cap 72 and a withdrawal handle 74 may also be releasably attachable to the post 12. A kit of parts therefore comprises the holder 10, the post 12, the cap 72 and the handle 74.

[0054] The cap 72, shown in FIG. 10, is substantially cylindrical and hollow, and comprises a closed end 76. The cap 72 fits onto the head 62 of the post 12. The closed end 76 of the cap 72 provides a surface to which force can be applied to insert the spike 60 into the ground. When the spike 60 is inserted into the ground, the cap 72 may be removed from the head 62, and the holder 10 may be attached to the post 12.

[0055] The withdrawal handle 74, shown in FIG. 12, comprises a gripping portion 78, shaped to be gripped by a user, and an attachment portion 80 for connecting to the head 62 of the post 12. The attachment portion 80 has a substantially semi-cylindrical cross section, with a lip 82 that is receivable in the annular groove 66 in the head 62 of the post 12. The user may attach the withdrawal handle 74 to the head 62 of the post 12 by fitting the lip 82 into the annular groove 66 in the head 62, and then may grip the gripping portion 78 and pull the post 12 from the ground.

[0056] The kit of parts comprises a second post 84, shown in FIG. 9, wherein the length of the spike 86 is longer than the length of the spike 60 shown in FIG. 8. The post 84 with the longer length spike 86 may be suitable for soft ground, and the post 12 with the shorter length spike 60 may be suitable for firmer ground. The second post 84 comprises a head 88 with an annular groove 90, that correspond to the head 62 and the annular groove 66 of the first post 12.
