Abstract
A foreign object protection system for dishwashers is disclosed. The foreign object protection system prevents large objects from damaging other components of a dishwasher. An example dishwasher for treating dishes according to a cycle of operation includes a tub at least partially defining a treating chamber for receiving utensils for treatment according to the at least one automatic cycle of operation, a sump fluidly coupled to the tub and collecting liquid supplied to the tub, a recirculation pump having an inlet fluidly coupled to the sump and an outlet fluidly coupled to the tub to recirculate liquid from the sump to the treating chamber; and a foreign object protection system comprising an inclined grate, and fluidly separating the sump and the outlet; wherein liquid in the tub collects in the sump and is recirculated by actuating the recirculation pump such that the liquid in the sump is drawn through the foreign object screen and expelled through the outlet to the tub and the foreign object screen protects the recirculation pump from harmful objects.
Claims
1. A method of filtering liquid in a dishwasher having a treating chamber with a sump fluidly connected to the treating chamber and a recirculation pump, wherein a foreign object protection screen comprising a cover, a first lay, and a second lay is disposed within the sump, the method comprising: filtering objects longer than a predetermined length by creating a labyrinth path between the cover and the first lay; filtering dense objects that do not float on the first lay; filtering objects that are larger than a predetermined size on the second lay; and passing a liquid through the foreign object protection screen to aid in the filtration process wherein the filtering objects that are larger than the predetermined size comprises passing objects over a series of openings that progressively increase in size.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the second lay is an inclined grate.
3. The method of claim 2 wherein filtering objects that are larger than the predetermined size comprises flowing liquid up at least one incline and down at least one valley on the inclined grate.
4. The method of claim 3, further comprising flowing liquid through at least one first opening located upstream of the at least one incline, wherein the at least one first opening retains foreign objects that are larger than the at least one first opening.
5. The method of claim 3 wherein filtering objects that are larger than the predetermined size comprises flowing liquid up a first incline and down a first valley and then up a second incline and down a second valley on the inclined grate.
6. The method of claim 1, further comprising chopping foreign objects that are able to pass through the second lay.
7. The method of claim 1, further comprising flowing liquid through a bypass feature formed in the first lay, the bypass feature creating a bypass path alternate to the labyrinth path.
8. The method of claim 1 wherein recirculating the liquid collected in the sump includes actuating the recirculation pump to draw the liquid through the foreign object protection screen.
9. A method of filtering liquid in a dishwasher having a treating chamber with a sump fluidly connected to the treating chamber and a recirculation pump, the method comprising: supplying liquid to the treating chamber to treat dishes in the treating chamber according to an automatic cycle of operation; flowing liquid down a first valley, up a first incline, down a second valley, and then up a second incline on an inclined grate located in the sump to trap objects that are larger than a predetermined size in at least one of the first and second valleys; flowing the liquid through at least one opening in the inclined grate to the sump; recirculating the liquid in the sump to the treating chamber; and retaining the trapped objects in the at least one of the first and second valleys.
10. The method of claim 9 wherein trapping objects that are larger than the predetermined size comprises passing the objects over a series of openings that progressively increase in size.
11. The method of claim 9, further comprising chopping objects that are able to pass through the inclined grate.
12. The method of claim 9, further comprising flowing liquid through a labyrinth path created by a cover and a first lay and trapping objects that are longer than a predetermined length.
13. The method of claim 12, further comprising flowing liquid through a bypass feature formed in the first lay, the bypass feature creating a bypass path alternate to the labyrinth path.
14. The method of claim 9, further comprising flowing liquid through at least one first opening located upstream of the first incline, wherein the at least one first opening retains foreign objects that are larger than the at least one first opening.
15. The method of claim 14, further comprising: flowing liquid through at least one second opening located downstream of the first incline; and moving an object up and over the first incline to reach the at least one second opening; wherein the at least one second opening traps objects that are larger than the at least one second opening.
16. The method of claim 15 wherein the at least one second opening is larger than the at least one first opening.
17. The method of claim 15, further comprising: flowing liquid through at least one third opening located downstream of the second incline; and moving an object up and over the first incline and the second incline to reach the at least one third opening; wherein the at least one third opening traps objects that are larger than the at least one third opening.
18. The method of claim 17 wherein the at least one third opening is larger than the at least one second opening.

(10) It should be appreciated that the door assembly 18 may be secured to the lower front edge of the chassis 12 or to the lower front edge of the tub 14 via a hinge assembly (not shown) configured to pivot the door assembly 18. When the door assembly 18 is closed, user access to the treating chamber 16 may be prevented, whereas user access to the treating chamber 16 may be permitted when the door assembly 18 is open.
(11) Dish holders, illustrated in the form of upper and lower dish racks 26, 28, are located within the treating chamber 16 and receive dishes for washing. The upper and lower racks 26, 28 are typically mounted for slidable movement in and out of the treating chamber 16 for ease of loading and unloading. Other dish holders may be provided, such as a silverware basket. As used in this description, the term dish(es) is intended to be generic to any item, single or plural, that may be treated in the dishwasher 10, including, without limitation; utensils, dishes, plates, pots, bowls, pans, glassware, and silverware.
(12) A spray system is provided for spraying liquid in the treating chamber 16 and is provided in the form of a first lower spray assembly 34, a second lower spray assembly 36, a rotating mid-level spray arm assembly 38, and/or an upper spray arm assembly 40. Upper sprayer 40, mid-level rotatable sprayer 38 and lower rotatable sprayer 34 are located, respectively, above the upper rack 26, beneath the upper rack 26, and beneath the lower rack 24 and are illustrated as rotating spray arms. The second lower spray assembly 36 is illustrated as being located adjacent the lower dish rack 28 toward the rear of the treating chamber 16. The second lower spray assembly 36 is illustrated as including a vertically oriented distribution header or spray manifold 44. Such a spray manifold is set forth in detail in U.S. Pat. No. 7,594,513, issued Sep. 29, 2009, and titled Multiple Wash Zone Dishwasher, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

The process of continuous dehydration and rehydration promotes breakdown of the soils better than traditional foreign object protection systems in which soils are contained low in the sump such that they never have the opportunity to dehydrate.
