Abstract
An air intake system for a motor vehicle is disclosed. The motor vehicle has a frame and a body on the frame. The frame and the body define a passenger cabin and an engine compartment longitudinally rearward of the passenger cabin. A firewall separates the passenger cabin and the engine compartment. An engine is attached to the frame in the engine compartment, and wheels are driven by the engine. The air intake system includes an air intake snorkel for providing air to the engine, a first vent in the body for directing air to the air intake snorkel, a second vent in the body for directing air to the air intake snorkel, a flexible member installed around the air intake snorkel for isolating the air intake snorkel from the engine compartment, and a compartment floor isolating the air intake snorkel from the wheels.
Claims
1. An air intake system for a motor vehicle, the motor vehicle having a frame, a body on the frame, a first portion of the frame and the body defining a passenger cabin, a second portion of the frame and the body defining an engine compartment longitudinally rearward of the passenger cabin, a firewall separating the passenger cabin and the engine compartment, an engine attached to the frame in the engine compartment, wheels driven by the engine, and a bed located longitudinally rearward of the passenger cabin and vertically above the engine compartment, the air intake system comprising: an air intake snorkel for providing air to the engine; a first vent in the body for directing air to the air intake snorkel; a flexible member installed around the air intake snorkel for isolating the air intake snorkel from the engine compartment; and a compartment floor isolating the air intake snorkel from the wheels.
2. The air intake system of claim 1 wherein the flexible member is fixedly attached to the firewall and the bed.
3. The air intake system of claim 1 wherein the flexible member is fixedly attached to the second portion of the frame.
4. The air intake system of claim 1 wherein the compartment floor is fixedly attached to the bed.
5. The air intake system of claim 1 wherein the compartment floor is fixedly attached to the firewall.
6. The air intake system of claim 1 wherein the compartment floor is fixedly attached to the second portion of the frame.
7. The air intake system of claim 1 further comprising: a second vent in the body for directing air to the air intake snorkel.
8. The air intake system of claim 1 wherein the snorkel further comprises: a cap.
9. The air intake system of claim 1 wherein the flexible member comprises ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber.
10. An air intake system for a motor vehicle, the motor vehicle having a frame, a body on the frame, a first portion of the frame and the body defining a passenger cabin, a second portion of the frame and the body defining an engine compartment longitudinally rearward of the passenger cabin, a firewall separating the passenger cabin and the engine compartment, an engine attached to the frame in the engine compartment, wheels driven by the engine, and a bed located longitudinally rearward of the passenger cabin and vertically above the engine compartment, the air intake system comprising: an air intake snorkel for providing air to the engine; a first vent in the body for directing air to the air intake snorkel; a second vent in the body for directing air to the air intake snorkel; a flexible member installed around the air intake snorkel for isolating the air intake snorkel from the engine compartment; and a compartment floor isolating the air intake snorkel from the wheels.
11. The air intake system of claim 10 wherein the flexible member is fixedly attached to the firewall, to the bed, to the snorkel, and to the second portion of the frame.
12. The air intake system of claim 10 wherein the compartment floor is fixedly attached to the bed, to the firewall, and to the second portion of the frame.
13. The air intake system of claim 10 wherein the snorkel further comprises: a cap.
14. The air intake system of claim 10 wherein the flexible member comprises ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber.

(13) The body 18 includes a rear quarter panel 42 that covers a portion of the engine compartment 32 and defines a wheel well 44, which is an open area in the body 18 in which each rear wheel 38 is free to move. In the motor vehicle 10 of the type illustrated, the vehicle suspension system 46, which includes a shock absorber or strut 50, provides for a wide range of motion of the rear wheel 38 to support off-road usage of the motor vehicle 10. Because the motor vehicle 10 is designed to be used off-road, the rear wheels 38 may be generate or kick up dust, dirt, rocks, and other types of the debris in the wheel well 44.
(14) Because the engine 36 of the motor vehicle 10 is located behind the firewall 34 that defines the forward-most portion of the engine compartment 32, there is a need to direct clean, ambient air flow to the engine 36 for purposes of supporting proper air-fuel mixing and combustion within the engine 36. In order to support proper air flow, a snorkel 52 extends from the air cleaner 54 of the engine 36, which cleans and directs air to the engine 36, to an air intake compartment 56 located behind the rear quarter panel 42 of the body 18. (16) The air intake compartment 56 may also include a molded solid floor 72 that is located behind the right rear quarter panel 42 and beneath the air intake port 74 of the snorkel 52. The floor 72 operates as a solid barrier between the air intake compartment 56 and wheel well 44 to prevent the introduction of dust and debris from the wheels 38, particularly in an off-road setting, into the air intake compartment 56. The floor 72 may be a molded plastic part constructed from a thermoplastic known to those skilled in the art. The floor 72 is attached to the bed 40, to the firewall 34, and to the frame 14, while abutting the right rear quarter panel 42 by any suitable fasteners 76 known to one skilled in the art.
(17) The air intake compartment 56 may also include a flexible member 78 that acts to seal the air intake compartment 56 from the engine compartment 32. The forward portion 80 of the flexible member 78 may be attached to the firewall 34, and a bottom portion 82 may be attached to the frame 14 by any suitable fasteners 76 known to one skilled in the art. The flexible member 78 may also be attached to the bed 40. The flexible member 78 may be made of any suitable flexible material known to one skilled in the art, including, but not limited to, ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber.
(18) The flexible member 78 may include a split 83 allowing the flexible member 78 to wrap around the snorkel 52 to allow the snorkel 52 to pass from the air intake compartment 56 into the engine compartment 32 while maintaining a seal between the air intake compartment 56 and engine compartment 32. The flexible member 78 further may be fixedly attached to the snorkel 52 in an embodiment to further secure the flexible member 78 around the snorkel 52.
(19) The combination of the floor 72 and flexible member 78, taken together in conjunction with the frame 14, firewall 34, and the right rear quarter panel 42, operates to seal off the snorkel 52 from the engine compartment 32 and from the wheel well 44. This combination forces the snorkel 52 to intake air from the outside of the vehicle 10. This helps to provide cleaner air at the snorkel 52 and extends the life of the air filter in the air cleaner 54.
(20) In the embodiment illustrated, the snorkel 52 includes a cap 84 that acts as a pre-filter by creating a serpentine pathway at the air intake port 74 of the snorkel 52, which further acts to further prevent debris, including water, small rocks, dirt, and the like, that is able to pass through the mesh covers 66, 70 of the first and second vents 60, 62 from entering the snorkel 52.
