Abstract
A sleep system for infants includes a zippered sleep bag, an extended swaddling piece for swaddling the infant, and a pair of releasably attachable, detachable, and reattachable connections between the back of the sleep bag and the inside of the swaddling piece. The connections permit removably attaching, detaching, and reattaching the swaddling piece from the sleep bag for adjusting the vertical alignment therebetween or for removing the swaddling piece therefrom. The connection is made by engagement of mating fastener patches using hook-and-loop fabric. Adjustable engagement of the patch on the back of the sleep bag with the patch on the inside of the swaddling piece creates a contact area permitting positioning and vertical between the sleep bag and swaddling piece. A pair of vertically-separated connections on the swaddling piece, including on the bottom corner, help retain the bottom edge of swaddling piece well below the reach of an infant to prevent it from pulling up the swaddling piece towards its face.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0029] For a first embodiment, we refer to
[0030] In an embodiment, sleep bag 1 includes back 10 and front 20, closure 30, front face 2 and back face 3, as well as closed edge 7 and open edge 8 connecting back 10 and front 20, and shoulder 6. Sleep bag 1 also includes armholes 4 and neck opening 5 with shoulders 6 formed therebetween near the top of sleep bag 1.
[0031] Back 10 is formed of inner layer 12, outer layer 14, and quilting 13 between inner layer 12 and outer layer 14 (shown in partial cutaway on
[0032] Inner layer 12 and outer layer 14 are soft, stretchable, slightly elastic fabric, formed of 97% bamboo rayon and 3% spandex. Quilting 13 is 100% polyester to provide warmth and softness.
[0033] Upper bag mating fastener patch 16 and lower bag mating fastener patch 18 are each attached to outer layer 14 at back face 3 using stitching, so as to face backward from back face 3. Both bag fastener patches are located approximately along centerline 9 in back face 3. Upper bag mating fastener patch 16 is located about between the infant's shoulder blades, about 1.5 from each armhole 4, about 1.5 below opening 5 at its top edge, extending to about 2.5 below arm holes 4 at its bottom edge, and extending about 1.5 laterally each side from centerline 9. Upper bag mating fastener patch 16 is a roughly oval patch of loop fabric for a hook-and-loop fastener, the diameters of which measure about 3 and 4.75. In other embodiments, a plurality of patches spaced apart, e.g. at regular intervals, may serve the same function as upper bag mating fastener patch 16. Lower bag mating fastener patch 18 is located about 13.5 below opening 5 at its top edge, extending to about 10 below arm holes 4 at its bottom edge, and extending about 1 laterally each side from centerline 9. Lower bag mating fastener patch 18 is a roughly oval patch of loop fabric for a hook-and-loop fastener, the diameters of which measure about 2 and 3.5. In other embodiments, a plurality of patches spaced apart, e.g. at regular intervals, may serve the same function as lower bag mating fastener patch 18. Upper bag mating fastener patch 16 and lower bag mating fastener patch 18 are separated by mating patch vertical separation 17, which is about 7.
[0034] Front 20 is formed of inner layer 22, outer layer 24, and quilting 23 between inner layer 22 and outer layer 24 (shown in partial cutaway on
[0035] Inner layer 22 and outer layer 24 are soft, stretchable, slightly elastic fabric, formed of 97% bamboo rayon and 3% spandex. Quilting 23 is 100% polyester to provide warmth and softness.
[0036] Back 10 and front 20 are connected along closed edge 7 between neck opening 5 and left armhole 4, to form left shoulder 6. Back 10 and front 20 are not connected for a portion below left shoulder 6 to define armholes 4. Closed edge 7 continues along the left side of sleep bag 1 connecting back 10 and front 20 until it reaches bottom end 33 of zipper 31 of closure 30. Closed edge 7 is formed by stitching between edges of back 10 and front 20.
[0037] Back 10 and front 20 are connected by closure 30 therebetweeen and along open edge 8 between neck opening 5 at top end 32 of zipper 31 until it reaches closed edge 7 at bottom end 33 of zipper 31. Closure 30 includes J-shaped zipper 31 to permit opening and closing between top end 32 and bottom end 33. Zipper 31 is openable from either end using top pull 35 to unzip from the top, top pull 35 being fully closed and housed at top end 32 in zipper garage 28, or using bottom pull 36 unzip from the bottom, bottom pull 36 being fully closed at bottom end 33. And zipper 31 is reclosable by reversing that process. Gathering loop 29 provides an elastic loop that can be extended about the bottom portion of sleep bag 1 to gather together that portion together, including parts of open edge 8 and closed edge 7, as shown in
[0038] For a second embodiment, we refer to
[0039] In an embodiment, a swaddling structure includes swaddling piece 40 including layer 52 with edges covered by bias tape 53 (and that may form part of the edge), forming inside 41 and outside 42. The curved profile of top edge 54 of swaddling piece 40 includes a centered neck section 44, extending in an slightly upward curve from opposing right wrap 45 and in an upward curve from left wrap 46. Transitions 47 connect neck section 44 to right wrap 45 and left wrap 46 along top edges, while slightly convex bottom edge 48 connects right wrap 45 and left wrap 46 at the bottom edges.
[0040] Swaddling piece 40 also includes upper back fastener patch 56 and lower back fastener patch 58 attached to inside 41 of layer 52 using stitching, so as to face forward (inwardly) from inside 41. Upper back fastener patch 56 is located along or approximately along centerline 49 on swaddling piece 40 on neck section 44, at neck section 44 at top edge 54, and extending to about 3.5 below that, to about 10.5 above bottom edge 48 at its bottom edge, and extending about 1.25 laterally each side from centerline 49. Upper back fastener patch 56 is a roughly oval patch of hook fabric for a hook-and-loop fastener (with a squared top edge), the diameters of which measure about 2 and 2.5. In other embodiments, a plurality of patches spaced apart, e.g. at regular intervals, may serve the same function as upper back fastener patch 56. Lower back fastener patch 58 is located off of, immediately adjacent to, or off-center along or approximately along, centerline 49 on swaddling piece 40 on at bottom edge 48, and extending to about 2.75 above that, to about 11.5 below top edge 54 at its top edge. Lower back fastener patch 58 is a roughly oval patch of hook fabric for a hook-and-loop fastener (with a squared bottom edge), the diameters of which measure about 2.25 and 2.75. In other embodiments, a plurality of patches spaced apart, e.g. at regular intervals, may serve the same function as lower back fastener patch 58.
[0041] Swaddling piece 40 also includes vertically-separated wrap fastener 60, formed of patches, upper wrap fastener patch 61 and lower wrap fastener patch 63, each attached to inside 41 of layer 52 using stitching, so as to face forward (inwardly) from inside 41. Wrap fastener 60 is located on right wrap 45, at or adjacent to its outer edge between upper edge 54 and bottom edge 48, and at or adjacent to upper edge 54 and bottom edge 48. Upper wrap fastener patch 61 extends inwardly from upper corner 50 at the outer edge of right wrap 45 toward centerline 49 and toward bottom edge 48 and also toward bottom corner 51. Upper wrap fastener patch 61 does not reach or overlap centerline 49. Upper wrap fastener patch 61 is a patch of hook fabric for a hook-and-loop fastener, that is about 3.75 high and 3.5 wide (with a rounded inner corner), and extends inwardly about that much from upper corner 50. Lower wrap fastener patch 63 extends inwardly from lower corner 51 at the outer edge of right wrap 45 toward centerline 49 and toward top edge 54 and also toward upper corner 50. Lower wrap fastener patch 63 does not reach or overlap centerline 49. Lower wrap fastener patch 63 is a patch of hook fabric for a hook-and-loop fastener, that is about 2.25 high and 2.75 wide (with a semicircular left corner), and extends inwardly about that much from lower corner 51. Upper wrap fastener patch 61 and lower wrap fastener patch 63 are vertically separated from one another and may be considered fully vertically-separated as they are corner-located. Fastener vertical separation 62 between upper wrap fastener patch 61 and lower wrap fastener patch 63 is about 6.75.
[0042] Swaddling piece 40 also includes vertically-separated mating wrap fastener 64, formed of upper wrap mating fastener patch 65 and lower wrap mating fastener patch 67, each attached to outside 42 of layer 52 using stitching, so as to face backward (outwardly) from outside 42. Upper wrap mating fastener patch 65 is located on left wrap 45, across centerline 49 and onto right wrap 45. Upper wrap mating fastener patch 65 extends downwardly from neck section 44 about 6, dropping to about 3 (but starting lower than from neck section 44) along left transition 47 toward the outer edge of left wrap 46, and for about 14.5 from the left edge, the 14.5 comprising about 2 past centerline 49 and about 12.5 from centerline 49 to the left edge. Upper wrap mating fastener patch 65 is thus offset from centerline 49. Upper wrap mating fastener patch 65 measures about 14.5 wide by 3-6 high and is a somewhat trapezoidal patch of loop fabric for a hook-and-loop fastener, with its left and right edges being roughly parallel, and its bottom edge being roughly normal to those edges. Lower wrap mating fastener patch 67 is located on left wrap 45, about 3.5 from centerline 49 and about 5 from the left edge of left right wrap 46. Lower wrap mating fastener patch 67 extends upwardly from bottom edge 48 about 2.75. Lower wrap mating fastener patch 67 is roughly rectangular and measures about 3.5 wide by 2.75 high. Measurements for mating wrap fastener 64 are as viewed from the front of swaddling piece 40.
[0043] Bias tape 53 may cover portions of the various patches on swaddling piece 40 along the edges, such that a patch being described as adjacent to or at an edge or corner can still mean a small area with bias tape 53 covering the patches at the very edge of the swaddling piece 40.
[0044] Layer 52 is a soft, stretchable, slightly elastic fabric, formed of 97% bamboo rayon and 3% spandex.
[0045] Transitions 47 may be straight, substantially straight, or convex to form that connection. Swaddling piece 40 is about 14 between neck section 44 at top edge 54 and bottom edge 48 along centerline 49, and about 26.5 between the outer ends of right wrap 45 and left wrap 46, and about 12.5 between centerline 49 and the outer end of left wrap 46 and about 14 between centerline 49 and the outer end of right wrap 45. Right wrap 45 is about 12.5 high along a vertical line at its outer end between upper corner 50 and lower corner 51. Left wrap 46 is about 12 high where it transitions to large-radius rounded corners that extend out a further 2 to form the outer end of left wrap 46.
[0046] For an alternative version of the second embodiment, we refer to
[0047] In an embodiment, a swaddling structure includes swaddling piece 40 including layer 52 with edges covered by bias tape 53 (and that may form part of the edge), forming inside 41 and outside 42.
[0048] Swaddling piece 40 also includes upper back fastener patch 56 and lower back fastener patch 58 attached to inside 41 of layer 52 using stitching, so as to face forward (inwardly) from inside 41.
[0049] Swaddling piece 40 also includes vertically-separated wrap fastener 60, formed of patches, upper wrap fastener patch 61, middle wrap fastener patch 63A, and lower wrap fastener patch 63, each attached to inside 41 of layer 52 using stitching, so as to face forward (inwardly) from inside 41. Wrap fastener 60 is located on right wrap 45, at or adjacent to its outer edge between upper edge 54 and bottom edge 48, and for upper wrap fastener patch 61 and lower wrap fastener patch 63, is located at or adjacent to upper edge 54 and bottom edge 48. Middle wrap fastener patch 63A extends inwardly from the outer edge of right wrap 45, between upper corner 50 and lower corner 51, toward centerline 49. Middle wrap fastener patch 63A does not reach or overlap centerline 49. Middle wrap fastener patch 63A is a patch of hook fabric for a hook-and-loop fastener, that is about 2.25 high and 2.75 wide (with a semicircular left corner), and extends inwardly about that much from the outer edge of right wrap 45. Upper wrap fastener patch 61, middle wrap fastener patch 63A, and lower wrap fastener patch 63 are vertically separated from one another and upper wrap fastener patch 61 and lower wrap fastener patch 63 may be considered fully vertically-separated as they are corner-located. Fastener vertical separation 62A between upper wrap fastener patch 61 and lower wrap fastener patch 63 is about 6.75. Intermediate fastener vertical separation 62B between upper wrap fastener patch 61 and middle wrap fastener patch 63A is about 2.5 and between middle wrap fastener patch 63A and lower wrap fastener patch 63 is about 2.0.
[0050] Swaddling piece 40 also includes vertically-separated mating wrap fastener 64, formed of upper wrap mating fastener patch 65 and lower wrap mating fastener patch 67, each attached to outside 42 of layer 52 using stitching, so as to face backward (outwardly) from outside 42. Upper wrap mating fastener patch 65 is located on left wrap 45, across centerline 49 and onto right wrap 45. Upper wrap mating fastener patch 65, including vertical extension 66, extends downwardly from neck section 44 about 6, and about 6 along left transition 47 toward the outer edge of left wrap 46 (but starting lower than from neck section 44), and for about 14.5 from the left edge, the 14.5 comprising about 2 past centerline 49 and about 12.5 from centerline 49 to the left edge. Upper wrap mating fastener patch 65 is thus offset from centerline 49. Vertical extension 66 is at the bottom of upper wrap mating fastener patch 65 and is approximately 3 vertical, only extends inward from the outer edge of left wrap 46 about 10, and does not extend past centerline 49 in this embodiment. It thus forms an approximately 3 step between the inner edge of vertical extension 66 up to the wider portion of upper wrap mating fastener patch 65. Upper wrap mating fastener patch 65 measures about 14.5 wide by 3-9-6 high and is a somewhat trapezoidal (reverse Nebraska-shaped) patch of loop fabric for a hook-and-loop fastener, with its left and right edges and the step being roughly parallel, and its bottom edges being roughly normal to those edges.
[0051] Bias tape 53 may cover portions of the various patches on swaddling piece 40 along the edges, such that a patch being described as adjacent to or at an edge or corner can still mean a small area with bias tape 53 covering the patches at the very edge of the swaddling piece 40.
[0052] Layer 52 is a soft, stretchable, slightly elastic fabric, formed of 97% bamboo rayon and 3% spandex.
[0053] Transitions 47 may be straight, substantially straight, or convex to form that connection.
[0054] In the first two embodiments, fasteners have been described as hook fabric and the mating fasteners as loop fabric and form a mating set of fabric fastener patches. The hook fabric and loop fabric could be reversed or interchanged, or other mating and adjustable fasteners could be used, so long as the fasteners can be attached and detached to one another, removably and repeatedly without damage. This permits repeated adjustment of the swaddling piece relative to the sleep bag.
[0055] For a third embodiment, we refer to
[0056] In an embodiment, an infant sleep bag is adjustably and detachably connected to a swaddling structure that can be wrapped around the infant and sleep bag to swaddle the infant. The combined sleep bag and swaddling piece may be referred to as sleep system 80, or as an infant sleep system, or as a combined swaddler-sleeper.
[0057] As shown in
[0058] Sleep bag 1 is laid out above swaddling piece 40 with back face 3 and upper and lower bag mating fastener patches 16 and 18 each facing down, and front face 2 facing up.
[0059] Upper bag mating fastener patch 16 is fastened to upper back fastener patch 56 by engaging the hook-and-loop fabric, which is releasable to detach by pulling them part. Lower bag mating fastener patch 18 is fastened to lower back fastener patch 58 by engaging the hook-and-loop fabric, which is releasable to detach by pulling them part. This makes engagement and attachment releasable, repeatable, and adjustable. Fastening upper and lower bag mating fastener patches 16 and 18 to upper and lower back fastener patches 56 and 58 forms vertically-separated and releasably attachable connections 81 to join the swaddling structure to the sleep bag to fix the vertical positioning of the swaddling structure relative to the sleep bag and thus to the infant's body.
[0060] Engagement at connections 81 may be full or partial (full being the entirety of the smaller patch if the shapes match, partial being part of each patch). The area of engagement (i.e. overlap) is positioning contact area 70, while the remaining possible overlap (were swaddling piece 40 adjusted vertically to a desired positioning relative to head 92 or neck 93 or legs 95 of infant 91) is vertical adjustment area 71 in which at least one patch is not in contact with the other patch. Vertical adjustment area 71 may be above and/or below or to the side of positioning contact area 70. Engagement between the patches creates releasably attachable, detachable, reattachable, removable, adjustable connections 81 between swaddling piece 40 and sleep bag 1, permitting sleep bag 1 to be attached, detached, reattached, and adjusted relative to swaddling piece 40, all without damaging either. The vertical separation of connections 81, moreover, help retain bottom edge 48 of swaddling piece 40 well below arms 94 (and hands) of infant 91 to prevent infant 91 from pulling up swaddling piece 40 towards its head 92.
[0061] As shown in
[0062] As shown in
[0063] As shown in
[0064] Following the folding positioning, wrap fastener 60 (and upper and lower wrap fastener patches 61 and 63) are fastened to wrap mating fastener 64 (and upper and lower wrap mating fastener patches 65 and 67), respectively, by engaging the hook-and-loop fabric, which is repeatable and adjustable. Doing so snuggles or swaddles the infant in the desirable position and holds bottom edge 48 firmly and below the reach of arms 94 of infant 91.
[0065] Engagement may be full or partial (full being the entirety of the smaller patch if the shapes match, partial being part of each patch). The areas of engagement (i.e. overlap) are wrap contact areas 76, while the remaining possible overlaps (were right wrap 45 pulled tighter or looser at top or bottom) are wrap adjustment areas 77. Wrap adjustment areas 77 may be to either side of, or above or below, wrap contact areas 77.
