[0031] The figures are provided to illustrate some examples of the invention described. The figures are not to limit the scope of the present embodiment of the invention or the appended claims. Aspects of the example embodiments are described below with reference to example applications for illustration. It should be understood that specific details, relationships, and methods are set forth to provide a full understanding of the example embodiments. One of ordinary skill in the art recognize the example embodiment can be practice without one or more specific details and/or with other methods.
[0032] The present disclosure relates to a waist padding assembly comprising multiple portions made of various materials at various locations of the padding assembly to allow for improved force distribution, support, breathability, and ergonomics for an operator (also referred to as a user). Various components, materials, assemblies, devices, and methods are also provided. In some example embodiments, the waist padding assembly herein may be used to contact the back of a user at or proximate the user's waistline as part of a harness assembly. Various harnesses and padding arrangements for harnesses typically lack the ability to provide equal distribution of forces applied to the user's waist, lack breathability, provide poor ergonomic support (e.g., create pressure points), and/or are uncomfortable to wear. For example, the uneven distribution of force can cause discomfort to operators who may be required to wear the harness for extended periods of times while performing operations of daily work. Embodiments of the present disclosure solve one or more of the aforementioned problems.
[0033] In some embodiments, a waist padding assembly may be provided with a center portion and two side portions. The two side portions may be disposed on opposite sides of the center portion. While being worn, the center portion may be configured to substantially align with and at least partially contact the user's back and the two side portions may be configured to substantially align with and at least partially contact the user's respective left and right flanks (e.g., along the user's waistline). The center portion may be made of one or more materials, while the two side portions may include at least one different material. In some embodiments, the center portion may comprise a porous ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) material. The EVA material may be configured to be breathable while distributing forces along the user's back. For example, in some embodiments, the EVA material may be porous, including ventilation holes defined therein to allow cooling of the user's back. Each of the two side portions comprise a different material configured to provide lateral support to the operator. For example, the side portions may comprise a polyurethane (PU) foam. In some embodiments, the side portions may be sewn, adhered, and/or otherwise attached to the center portion.
[0034] In operation, during extended use, the center portion may experience constant or nearly constant pressure in the form of the operator's weight resting against the center portion. In such embodiments, the center portion may be made of a higher density and higher resilience material (e.g., EVA) than the side portions to offer strong support for the lumbar during use. In some embodiments, the two side portions may be configured to distribute weight and/or pressure from an operator when the operator applies additional pressure to the side portions during periodic movements (e.g., leaning, and/or the like). In some embodiments, the two side portions may comprise a PU foam, such as an integral skin foam (ISF). In some embodiments, ISF foam in the side portions may be configured to distribute pressure in the vertical direction. In various embodiments, example ISF side portions may be configured to recover to an initial state without plastic deformation (e.g., a compression set test result of 0 deformation after 24 hours compression). In some embodiments, the EVA material of the center portion may comprise a more rigid material than the ISF, wherein the EVA material of the center portion may be configured to provide more support to the lumbar of a user. In some embodiments, the EVA material of the center portion may be configured to distribute the pressure in a horizontal direction. In some embodiments, the EVA may be a high-density EVA (e.g., 65 kg/m.sup.3) with a higher hardness than the PU side portions (e.g., HC70).
[0035] In some embodiments, a back plate may provide further support to the center portion. The back plate may be made of, for example, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) (e.g., nylon) and may provide at least some additional rigidity to the EVA material. In some embodiments, the center portion may additionally include a 3D spacer fabric disposed along a first side of the center portion. The 3D spacer fabric may be configured to add breathability and comfort for the user. The first side of the center portion may be configured to contact the user's back. In some embodiments, the center portion may additionally include a warp mesh material disposed along a second side of the center portion, which may facilitate breathability while covering the EVA material. In some embodiments, the side portions may be attached directly to the EVA material.
[0036] In various embodiments, the waist padding assembly may include one or more retainers, which may define a passage to receive a belt configured to wrap around the user's waist, with the EVA material and PU material of the respective center and side portions being configured to be disposed between the user's waist and the belt. The belt may comprise one or more attachment rings configured to engage a rope, wire, clip, carabiner, pulley, or other retaining device through which at least some of the weight of the user is supported and force thereby applied to the user's waist while being cushioned and supported by the waist padding assembly.
[0037] As described herein, various embodiments of the present disclosure may include a waist padding assembly that utilizes a porous material and two side portions to provide an operator with improved force distribution, increased breathability, and increased ergonomics to ensure better wearability and long-term comfort.
[0038]
[0039] In various embodiments, two side portions 112 may comprise at least one different material than the center portion. In some embodiments, the side portion 112 may comprise a polyurethane (PU) foam material (e.g., HC28 hardness). The polyurethane material may be configured to help distribute peak pressure forces endured by an operator and to distribute the pressure across an area of the operator's flanks to reduce the maximum pressure on any one point or sub-area of the flanks. For example, in operation, the harness assembly (e.g., harness assembly 300 shown in

[0042] In various embodiments, the backplate 200 may comprise a rigid plastic material (e.g., TPU such as nylon, etc.) configured to provide additional support to the lower back of an operator and/or the lower portion of an operator's waist. In various embodiments, the shell 210 of the backplate may be configured to engage with a second side of the waist padding assembly 100. In some embodiments, the one or more hook elements 212 and/or the one or more retainers 218 may integral with the shell 210 of the backplate. The one or more retainers 218A, 218B may be disposed on opposite sides of the backplate shell 210, such that a first retainer 218A is on a first side and a second retainer 218B is on a second side.
