Abstract
A container includes a base and a lid. A peripheral wall of the base terminates in a sealing flange extending outward from the peripheral wall of the base. The sealing flange includes a rail and a rim defining a groove therebetween. An upper surface of the lid terminates in a downwardly extending peripheral shoulder and an outwardly extending peripheral flange positioned outward from the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder. The outwardly extending peripheral flange of the lid abuts the rim when the container is closed. The rim extends beyond an outer edge of the outwardly extending peripheral flange of the lid substantially around the perimeter of the container. At least one surface of the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder engages at least one surface of the groove at a seal interface. The rail impedes the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder from moving in a direction away from the seal interface.
Claims

A container, comprising: a base including a bottom and a peripheral wall extending upward from the bottom, wherein the peripheral wall terminates in a sealing flange extending outward from the peripheral wall of the base, wherein the sealing flange includes a rail and a rim defining a groove there between; and a lid including an upper surface, wherein the upper surface of the lid terminates in a downwardly extending peripheral shoulder and an outwardly extending peripheral flange positioned outward from the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder, wherein the outwardly extending peripheral flange of the lid abuts the rim when the container is closed, wherein the rim extends beyond an outer edge of the outwardly extending peripheral flange of the lid substantially around the perimeter of the container, wherein at least one surface of the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder engages at least one surface of the groove at a seal interface to form a non-permanent press-fit seal between the base and the lid when the container is closed, wherein the rail impedes the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder from moving in a direction away from the seal interface to deter unauthorized opening of the container when the container is closed.
2. The container as recited in claim 1, wherein the at least one surface of the groove is an outer side surface of the groove, and wherein the at least one surface of the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder is an outwardly facing surface of the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder, wherein the rim impedes the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder from moving in an outward direction and the rail impedes the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder from moving in an inward direction when the container is closed.
3. The container as recited in claim 1, wherein the at least one surface of the groove is an undercut surface on its outer periphery.
4. The container as recited in claim 1, wherein the at least one surface of the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder is an outwardly tapered shoulder surface.
5. The container as recited in claim 1, wherein the upper surface of the lid includes a top wall and at least one peripheral wall extending downwardly from the top wall, wherein the at least one peripheral wall is positioned between the top wall and the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder.
6. The container as recited in claim 1, wherein the lid terminates in an outwardly extending peripheral flange positioned outward from the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder, wherein at least a portion of the upper surface of the lid is raised with respect to the outwardly extending peripheral flange.
7. The container as recited in claim 6, wherein at least a portion of the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder of the lid is recessed with respect to the outwardly extending peripheral flange.
8. The container as recited in claim 1, wherein the rim includes an upwardly projecting bead extending substantially about the perimeter of the base, wherein the upwardly projecting bead surrounds an outer edge of the outwardly extending peripheral flange of the lid substantially about the perimeter of the base when the container is closed.
9. The container as recited in claim 1, wherein the rail, the rim and the groove extend around the entire perimeter of the base.
10. The container as recited in claim 1, wherein the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder extends around the entire perimeter of the lid.
11. The container as recited in claim 1, further comprising a tamper-evident hinge joining the lid with the base, the tamper-evident hinge including a frangible section.
12. The container as recited in claim 11, wherein the frangible section includes at least one line of weakness.
13. The container as recited in claim 1, wherein the lid and the base are thermoformed from a single sheet of plastic.
14. A method of forming a container, comprising: a) providing a sheet of plastic material that is at least partially transparent; b) forming a base from a portion of the sheet of plastic material, wherein the base includes a bottom and a peripheral wall extending upward from the bottom, wherein the peripheral wall terminates in a sealing flange extending outward from the peripheral wall of the base, wherein the sealing flange includes a rail and a rim defining a groove there between; and c) forming a lid from a portion of the sheet of plastic material, wherein the lid includes an upper surface, wherein the upper surface of the lid terminates in a downwardly extending peripheral shoulder and an outwardly extending peripheral flange positioned outward from the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder, wherein the outwardly extending peripheral flange of the lid abuts the rim when the container is closed, wherein the rim extends beyond an outer edge of the outwardly extending peripheral flange of the lid substantially around the perimeter of the container, wherein at least one surface of the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder engages at least one surface of the groove at a seal interface to form a non-permanent press-fit seal between the base and the lid when the container is closed, wherein the rail impedes the downwardly extending peripheral shoulder from moving in a direction away from the seal interface to deter unauthorized opening of the container when the container is closed.
15. The method as recited in claim 14, further comprising forming a hinge from a portion of the sheet joining the lid with the base, wherein the lid, the base, and the hinge are unitarily formed from the sheet of plastic material.

[0018] It should be understood that the appended drawings are not necessarily to scale, presenting a somewhat simplified representation of various preferred features illustrative of the basic principles of the invention. The specific design features of the present invention as disclosed herein, including, for example, specific dimensions, orientations, locations, and shapes will be determined in part by the particular intended application and use environment
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0019] Disclosed herein are detailed descriptions of specific embodiments of containers for protecting baked goods during shipment and methods of constructing the same. It will be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely examples of the way in which certain aspects of the invention can be implemented and do not represent an exhaustive list of all of the ways the invention may be embodied. Indeed, it will be understood that the systems, devices and methods described herein may be embodied in various and alternative forms. Moreover, the figures are not necessarily to scale and some features may be exaggerated or minimized to show details of particular components.
[0020] Well-known components, materials or methods are not necessarily described in great detail in order to avoid obscuring the present disclosure.
