Abstract
A liquid crystal medium comprising one or more compounds of formula PT and one or more compounds of formula GF and/or UI
##STR00001## in which the occurring groups and parameters have the meanings defined in claim 1. Also, high-frequency components comprising these media, especially microwave components for high-frequency devices, such as devices for shifting the phase of microwaves, tunable filters, tunable metamaterial structures, and electronic beam steering antennas, e.g. phased array antennas.
Claims
1. A liquid-crystal medium comprising one or more compounds of formula PT ##STR00446## in which R.sup.P denotes H or straight-chain alkyl having 1 to 12 C atoms branched alkyl having 3 to 12 C atoms, straight-chain alkenyl having 2 to 12 C atoms, or branched alkenyl having 3 to 12 C atoms, in which one or more CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by ##STR00447## and where one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by O, ##STR00448## denotes ##STR00449## in which L.sup.1, L.sup.2 and L.sup.3, identically or differently, denote H, F, Cl or alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms, t.sub.1 is 0 and t.sub.2 is 1, or t.sub.1 is 1 and t.sub.2 is 0; the medium further comprising one or more compounds selected from the group of compounds of the formulae GF and UI ##STR00450## in which R.sup.G and R.sup.U have the meanings given for R.
2. The medium according to claim 1, wherein the group ##STR00451## in formula PT denotes ##STR00452##
3. The medium according to claim 1, wherein the one or more compounds of the formula PT are selected from the group of compounds of the formulae PT-1 to PT-4: ##STR00453## in which R.sup.P denotes straight chain alkyl having 1 to 7 C atoms or branched alkyl having 3 to 9 C atoms, in which one or more CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by ##STR00454##

The medium according to claim 1, wherein the medium additionally comprises one or more compounds selected from the group of compounds of the formulae I, II and III: ##STR00455## in which R.sup.1 denotes H, non-fluorinated alkyl having 1 to 12 C atoms, or non-fluorinated alkenyl having 2 to 12 C atoms, in which one or more CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by ##STR00456## where one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by O, n is 0, 1 or 2, ##STR00457## on each occurrence, independently of one another, denote ##STR00458## In which R.sup.L, on each occurrence, identically or differently, denotes H or alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms, or denote ##STR00459## in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms or F, ##STR00460## denotes ##STR00461## and wherein ##STR00462## alternatively denotes ##STR00463## in which R.sup.L has the meanings defined above for ##STR00464## R.sup.2 denotes H, non-fluorinated alkyl having 1 to 12 C atoms, or non-fluorinated alkenyl having 2 to 12 C atoms, in which one or more CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by ##STR00465## where one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by O, Z.sup.21 denotes trans-CH?CH, trans-CF?CF or C?C, and ##STR00466## denotes ##STR00467## in which R.sup.L, on each occurrence, identically or differently, denotes H or alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms, or denotes ##STR00468## in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms or F, ##STR00469## denotes ##STR00470## in which R.sup.L, on each occurrence, identically or differently, denotes H or alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms, or denotes ##STR00471## in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms or F, and wherein the compounds of the formulae GF and UI are excluded from the compounds of the formula II; R.sup.3 denotes H, non-fluorinated alkyl or non-fluorinated alkoxy having 1 to 17 C atoms, or non-fluorinated alkenyl, non-fluorinated alkenyloxy or non-fluorinated alkoxyalkyl having 2 to 15 C atoms, in which one or more CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by ##STR00472## one of Z.sup.31 and Z.sup.32 denotes trans-CH?CH, trans-CF?CF or C?C, and the other one, independently thereof, denotes C?C, trans-CH?CH, trans-CF?CF or a single bond, and ##STR00473## Independently of one another, denote ##STR00474## in which R.sup.L, on each occurrence, identically or differently, denotes H or alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms, or denotes ##STR00475## in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms or F, and wherein ##STR00476## alternatively denotes ##STR00477## in which R.sup.L has the meanings defied above for ##STR00478## denotes ##STR00479## in which R.sup.L, on each occurrence, identically or differently, denotes H or alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms, or denotes ##STR00480## in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms or F, and wherein the compounds of the formula PT are excluded from the compounds of the formula III.

The liquid crystal medium according claim 1, wherein the medium comprises one or more compounds selected from the group of compounds of the formulae I-1 to I-5 ##STR00481## in which L.sup.1, L.sup.2 and L.sup.3, on each occurrence, identically or differently, denote H or F, and R.sup.1 denotes H, non-fluorinated alkyl having 1 to 12 C atoms, or non-fluorinated alkenyl having 2 to 12 C atoms, in which one or more CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by ##STR00482## where one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by O, ##STR00483## denotes ##STR00484## in which R.sup.L, on each occurrence, identically or differently, denotes H or alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms, or denote ##STR00485## in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms or F, and ##STR00486## denotes ##STR00487##

The liquid crystal medium according to claim 1, wherein the medium comprises one or more compounds selected from the group of compounds of the formulae II-1 to II-3 ##STR00488## in which R.sup.2 denotes H, non-fluorinated alkyl having 1 to 12 C atoms, or non-fluorinated alkenyl having 2 to 12 C atoms, in which one or more CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by ##STR00489## where one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by O, ##STR00490## denotes ##STR00491## in which R.sup.L, on each occurrence, identically or differently, denotes H or alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms, or denotes ##STR00492## in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms or F, and ##STR00493## denotes ##STR00494## in which R.sup.L, on each occurrence, identically or differently, denotes H or alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms, or denotes ##STR00495## in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms or F.

The medium according to claim 1, wherein the medium comprises one or more compounds of formula III selected from the group consisting of the compounds of the formulae III-1 to III-6 ##STR00496## in which Z.sup.31 and Z.sup.32, independently of one another, denote trans-CH?CH or trans-CF?CF, and in formula III-6 alternatively one of Z.sup.31 and Z.sup.32 may denote C?C and the other groups have the meaning given in claim 1 under formula III, R.sup.3 denotes non-fluorinated alkyl or alkoxy having 1 to 7 C atoms or non-fluorinated alkenyl having 2 to 7 C atoms, and one of ##STR00497## denotes ##STR00498## and the others, independently of one another, denote ##STR00499## where ##STR00500## alternatively denotes ##STR00501##

The medium according to claim 1, wherein the medium comprises one or more compounds of formula XII ##STR00502## in which R.sup.12 denotes H, alkyl or alkoxy having 1 to 12 C atoms, or alkenyl, alkenyloxy or alkoxyalkyl having 2 to 12 C atoms, in which one or more CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by ##STR00503## or denotes a group R.sup.P, R.sup.P denotes halogen, CN, NCS, R.sup.F, R.sup.FO or R.sup.FS, wherein R.sup.F denotes fluorinated alkyl or fluorinated alkenyl having up to 9 C atoms, Z.sup.121, Z.sup.122 identically or differently, denote CH?CH, CF?CF, CH?CF, CF?CH, C?C or a single bond, X.sup.1, X.sup.2, X.sup.3 and X.sup.4, identically or differently, denote Cl or F, t is 0 or 1, and ##STR00504## denote a radical selected from the following groups: a) the group consisting of 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-naphthylene, and 2,6-naphthylene, in which one or two CH groups may be replaced by N and in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by L, wherein tetrafluoro-1,4-phenylene is excluded, b) the group consisting of trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-cyclohexenylene, bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane-1,3-diyl, 4,4-bicyclohexylene, bicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,4-diyl, spiro[3.3]-heptane-2,6-diyl, in which one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups may be replaced by O and/or S and in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by F, c) the group consisting of thiophene-2,5-diyl, thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-diyl, selenophene-2,5-diyl, each of which may also be mono- or polysubstituted by L, L on each occurrence, identically or differently, denotes F, Cl, CN, SCN, SF.sub.5 or straight-chain or branched, in each case optionally fluorinated, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy or alkoxycarbonyloxy having 1 to 12 C atoms.

The medium according to claim 1, wherein the medium comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the compounds of the formulae XII-1 to XII-11 ##STR00505## in which L.sup.1, L.sup.2 and L.sup.3, identically or differently, denote H, F, Cl, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl or cyclopentenyl, and R.sup.12 denotes H, alkyl or alkoxy having 1 to 12 C atoms, or alkenyl, alkenyloxy or alkoxyalkyl having 2 to 12 C atoms, in which one or more CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by ##STR00506## or denotes a group R.sup.P R.sup.P denotes halogen, CN, NCS, R.sup.F, R.sup.FO or R.sup.FS, wherein R.sup.F denotes fluorinated alkyl or fluorinated alkenyl having up to 9 C atoms, and X.sup.1, X.sup.2, X.sup.3 and X.sup.4, identically or differently, denote Cl or F.

The medium according to claim 1, wherein the medium comprises one or more compounds of the formula I-3 ##STR00507## in which R.sup.1 denotes H, non-fluorinated alkyl having 1 to 12 C atoms, or non-fluorinated alkenyl having 2 to 12 C atoms, in which one or more CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by ##STR00508## where one or more non-adjacent CH.sub.2-groups may be replaced by O, ##STR00509## denotes ##STR00510## in which R.sup.L, on each occurrence, identically or differently, denotes H or alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms, or denote ##STR00511## in which one or more H atoms may be replaced by alkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms or F, and ##STR00512## denotes ##STR00513##
11. An electronic component comprising a first substrate and a second substrate facing each other, a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between said substrates, an electrode provided on each substrate or two electrodes provided on only one of the substrates for supplying an electric potential across said liquid crystal layer to drive liquid crystals in a predetermined configuration, wherein the liquid crystal layer comprises the liquid crystal medium according to claim 1.
12. The component according to claim 11, wherein the component is configured for use in high-frequency technology.
13. The component according to claim 11, wherein the component is a liquid-crystal based antenna element, a phase shifter, a tunable filter, a tunable metamaterial structure, a matching circuit or a varactor.
14. A microwave antenna array, wherein it comprises one or more components according to claim 11.
15. The component according to claim 11, wherein the component is a transmissive or a reflective spatial light modulator.
