Abstract
A sump drain includes a ring-shaped chamber having an inner sidewall with a diameter of at least about 18 inches and an outer sidewall, and a circular opening between the sidewalls preferably about an inch wide and optionally having a grid cover. Preferably the inner sidewall has a number of ports extending inwardly to radial conduits to a central hub for tying into a pool or spa filtering system, with the central hub operating as a clean out and having a removable cap. Upon installation, plaster substantially fills the space between the chamber and the central hub, such that the sump drain attractively blends in with the pool or spa floor. When installed, the top opening is preferably substantially flush with the pool or spa floor while being safely unblockable. And the sump drain preferably further includes channels both outboard and inboard from the chamber top opening and around the central hub, to help prevent water from passing through the plaster into the shotcrete of the pool or spa.
Claims
1. A sump drain assembly for installation in a surface of a swimming pool or spa having a drain inlet, the sump drain assembly comprising: an upper part exposed through the surface when installed, the upper part having a first portion forming an outer sidewall and a second portion forming an interior sidewall, the outer sidewall encircling the interior sidewall, the first and second portions being configured for at least partial embedding in the surface, the outer and interior sidewalls defining a contiguous annular top opening therebetween, the outer sidewall being formed with a water stop defining a gutter extending radially therefrom for embedded anchoring in the surface; a drainage hub disposed radially inward from the contiguous annular top opening of the upper part to be in open communication therewith, and the drainage hub being configured for embedding in the surface of the swimming pool or spa and coupling to the drain inlet; and, a lower part configured for embedding in the surface beneath the upper part when installed, the lower part being disposed to receive water admitted through the contiguous annular top opening and in cooperation with the upper part guide the water to the drainage hub; wherein the contiguous annular top opening is defined to contiguously extend fully about the drainage hub and remain substantially flush with the surface when the sump drain assembly is installed in the swimming pool or spa.
2. The sump drain assembly as recited in claim 1, wherein the upper part includes a removable cap disposed above the drainage hub.
3. The sump drain assembly as recited in claim 1 further comprising a removable grid cover coupled to the upper part to cover the contiguous annular top opening.
4. The sump drain assembly as recited in claim 1, wherein the water stop includes a horizontal shelf and a vertical wall collectively forming the gutter.
5. The sump drain assembly as recited in claim 1, wherein the water stop is endlessly looped about the first portion of the upper part.
6. The sump drain assembly as recited in claim 1, wherein the upper and lower parts cooperatively define a chamber disposed to receive water admitted through the contiguous annular top opening.
7. The sump drain assembly as recited in claim 6, wherein the chamber forms a ring-shaped body, and the upper and lower parts cooperatively define a plurality of radial conduits extending between the chamber and drainage hub.
8. The sump drain assembly as recited in claim 2, wherein the removable cap is no greater than about 2.5 inches in diameter, and is separate from the upper part.
9. The sump drain assembly as recited in claim 1, wherein the contiguous annular top opening is no less than about eighteen inches in diameter.
10. A sump drain for installation in a surface of a swimming pool or spa having a drain inlet, the sump drain comprising: an upper part exposed through the surface when installed, the upper part having a first portion forming an outer sidewall and a second portion forming an interior sidewall, the outer sidewall encircling the interior sidewall, the first and second portions being configured for at least partial embedding in the surface, the outer and interior sidewalls defining therebetween a contiguous annular top opening forming a ring substantially flush with the surface when the sump drain is installed in the swimming pool or spa, the outer sidewall being formed with a water stop extending therefrom below the surface when installed; a hub concentrically disposed with respect to the contiguous annular top opening of the upper part to be in fluid communication therewith, the hub being sunken in elevation with respect to the surface when installed, the hub being configured for open communication with the drain inlet; and, a lower part configured for embedding in the surface beneath the upper part when installed, the lower part being disposed to receive water admitted through the contiguous annular top opening and in cooperation with the upper part guide the water to the hub; wherein the upper part includes a removable cap disposed above the hub.
11. The sump drain as recited in claim 10, wherein the water stop defines a gutter extending radially from the outer sidewall for embedded anchoring in the surface.
12. The sump drain as recited in claim 11, wherein the water stop includes a horizontal shelf and a vertical wall collectively forming the gutter.
13. The sump drain as recited in claim 10 further comprising a removable grid cover coupled to the upper part to cover the contiguous annular top opening.
14. The sump drain as recited in claim 10, wherein the water stop is endlessly looped about the first portion of the upper part.
15. The sump drain as recited in claim 1, wherein the upper and lower parts cooperatively define a plurality of ports communicating with conduits extending radially with respect to the hub for guiding water admitted through the contiguous annular top opening thereto.
16. A sump drain for installation in a surface of a swimming pool or spa having a drain inlet, the sump drain comprising: a contiguous annular top opening defined by a partially embedded body, the annular top opening forming a ring surrounded by and surrounding portions of the surface when installed; the annular top opening in fluid communication with a hub, the hub being open to the drain inlet; the hub being smaller in circumference than the annular top opening, the hub being positioned below the annular top opening in elevation relative to the surface and centered relative to the annular top opening radially inward of the annular top opening; a removable cap defined above the hub; and a water stop surrounding the annular top opening, the water stop extending from the sump drain below the surface; wherein the annular top opening is defined to contiguously extend fully about the hub and remain substantially flush with the surface when the sump drain is installed in the swimming pool or spa.
