Abstract

The invention relates to a liquid-crystalline medium which comprises at least one compound of the formula I, ##STR00001## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.1*, Z.sup.1, Z.sup.2 and L.sup.1-3 have the meanings defined herein, and to the use thereof for an active-matrix display, in particular based on the VA, PSA, PS-VA, PALC, FFS, PS-FFS, PS-IPS or IPS effect.

Claims

1. A liquid-crystalline medium comprising: at least one compound of formula I, ##STR00462## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.1* each, independently of one another, denote an alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 15 C atoms, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each optionally be replaced, independently of one another, by C?C, CF.sub.2O, CH?CH, ##STR00463## O, COO, OCO in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and in which, in addition, one or more H atoms may each optionally be replaced by halogen, Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denote a single bond, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2, CH?CH, CH.sub.2O, OCH.sub.2, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, COO, OCO, C.sub.2F.sub.4, C?C, CF?CF, or CH?CHCHO, and L.sup.1-3 each, independently of one another, denote F, Cl, CF.sub.3, OCF.sub.3 or CHF.sub.2; and 20-50%, based on the total weight of the medium, of the compound of formula CC-3-V ##STR00464##

2. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises at least one compound of formulae I-a to I-h, ##STR00465## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.1* have the meanings indicated in claim 1.

3. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises at least one compound of formulae I-a-1 to I-a-36 ##STR00466## ##STR00467## ##STR00468## ##STR00469##

4. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein the proportion of the compound(s) of formula I in the medium as a whole is 1-30% by weight.

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium further comprises one or more compounds selected from the group of the compounds of formulae IIA, IIB and IIC, ##STR00470## in which R.sup.2A, R.sup.2B and R.sup.2C each, independently of one another, denote H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 15 C atoms which is unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each optionally be replaced by O, S, ##STR00471## C?C, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, OCO or OCO in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, L.sup.1-4 each, independently of one another, denote F, Cl, CF.sub.3 or CHF.sub.2, Z.sup.2 and Z.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denote a single bond, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2, CH?CH, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, CH.sub.2O, OCH.sub.2, COO, OCO, C.sub.2F.sub.4, CF?CF, or CH?CHCH.sub.2O, (O) denotes a single bond or O, p denotes 0, 1 or 2, q denotes 0 or 1, and v denotes 1 to 6.

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium further comprises one or more compounds of formula III, ##STR00472## in which R.sup.31 and R.sup.32 each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl or alkenyloxy radical having up to 12 C atoms, and ##STR00473## and Z.sup.3 denotes a single bond, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2, CH?CH, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, CH.sub.2O, OCH.sub.2, COO, OCO, C.sub.2F.sub.4, C.sub.4H.sub.9, C?C, or CF?CF.

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium further comprises one or more compounds of formulae L-1 to L-11, ##STR00474## ##STR00475## in which R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denotes H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 15 C atoms which is unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each optionally be replaced by O, S, ##STR00476## C?C, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, OCO or OCO in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, (O) denotes a single bond or O, alkyl denotes an alkyl radical having 1-6 C atoms, and s denotes 1 or 2.

8. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium further comprises one or more terphenyls of formulae T-1 to T-21, ##STR00477## ##STR00478## ##STR00479## in which R denotes a straight-chain alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1-7 C atoms, (O) denotes a single bond or O, m denotes 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, and n denotes 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4.

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium further comprises one or more compounds of formulae O-1 to O-17, ##STR00480## ##STR00481## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denotes H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 15 C atoms which is unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each optionally be replaced by O, S, ##STR00482## C?C, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, OCO or OCO in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another.

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium further comprises one or more compounds selected from the group of compounds of formulae BC, CR, PH-1, PH-2, BF-1, BF-2, BS-1 and BS-2, ##STR00483## in which R.sup.B1, R.sup.B2, R.sup.CR1, R.sup.CR2, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denotes H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 15 C atoms which is unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each optionally be replaced by O, S, ##STR00484## C?C, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, OCO or OCO in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, c denotes 0, 1 or 2, and d denotes 1 or 2.

11. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium further comprises one or more compounds of the formulae ##STR00485## ##STR00486## ##STR00487## ##STR00488##

12. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises 22.5-43.5% of the compound of the formula ##STR00489##

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium further comprises one or more compounds selected from the group of compounds of formulae P-1 to P-4, ##STR00490## in which R denotes straight-chain alkyl, alkoxy or alkenyl, each having 1 or 2 to 6 C atoms respectively, and X denotes F, Cl, CF.sub.3, OCF.sub.3, OCHFCF.sub.3 or CCF.sub.2CHFCF.sub.3.

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium further comprises one or more compounds selected from the group of compounds of the formulae ##STR00491## ##STR00492## in which R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.10 each, independently of one another, denotes H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 15 C atoms which is unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each optionally be replaced by O, S, ##STR00493## C?C, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, OCO or OCO in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, alkyl and alkyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkyl radical having 1-6 C atoms, alkenyl and alkenyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkenyl radical having 2-6 C atoms, (O)alkyl, (O)-alkyl and (O)alkyl* each, independently of one another, denote alkyl or O-alkyl, (O)alkenyl* each, independently of one another, denote alkenyl or O-alkenyl, m denotes 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, n denotes 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, x denotes 1 to 6, c denotes 0, 1 or 2, and d denotes 1 or 2.

15. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises at least one polymerizable compound.

16. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises one or more additives.

17. The liquid-crystalline medium according claim 16, wherein said one or more additives are selected from free-radical scavengers, antioxidants and UV stabilizers.

18. A process for the preparation of a liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, comprising mixing at least one compound of formula I with at least one further mesogenic compound, optionally adding one or more additives, and optionally adding at least one polymerizable compound.

19. A method of inducing an electro-optical effect comprising applying a voltage to a liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1.

20. An electro-optical display having active-matrix addressing, said display comprising a liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1 as dielectric.

21. The electro-optical display according to claim 20, wherein said display is a VA, PSA, PA-VA, PS-VA, PALC, IPS, PS-IPS, FFS, PS-FFS display.

22. The electro-optical display according to claim 21, wherein said display is an IPS, PS-IPS, FFS or PS-FFS display which has a planar alignment layer.

23. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises one or more compounds of the following formulae: ##STR00494## ##STR00495## ##STR00496## ##STR00497## ##STR00498## ##STR00499## ##STR00500## in which alkyl and alkyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkyl radical having 1-6 C atoms, alkenyl and alkenyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkenyl radical having 2-6 C atoms, and (O) denotes a single bond or O.

24. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 23, wherein said medium contains at least one compound of formula IIC-1 ##STR00501## wherein alkyl and alkyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkyl radical having 1-6 C atom.

25. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 23, wherein said medium additionally comprises one or more compounds of the formula III, in which ##STR00502## R.sup.31 and R.sup.32 each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl, alkoxyalkyl or alkenyloxy radical having up to 12 C atoms, and ##STR00503## Z.sup.3 denotes a single bond, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2, CH?CH, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, CH.sub.2O, OCH.sub.2, COO, OCO, C.sub.2F.sub.4, C.sub.4H.sub.8, C?C, or CF?CF.

26. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium contains one or more biphenyls of formulae B-1 to B-3, ##STR00504## in which alkyl and alkyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkyl radical having 1-6 C atoms, and alkenyl and alkenyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkenyl radical having 2-6 C atoms.

27. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium contains one or more compounds of formulae Z-1 to Z-9 ##STR00505## in which R denotes H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 15 C atoms which is unsubstituted, or monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals are each optionally replaced by O, S, ##STR00506## C?C, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, OCO or OCO in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, (O) denotes a single bond or O, and alkyl denotes an alkyl radical having 1-6 C atoms.

28. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium contains one or more of the following compounds: ##STR00507##

29. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium contains a compound of formula CC-3V-1 ##STR00508##

30. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 29, wherein the total amount of compounds CC-3-V and CC-3V-1 combined is up to 65% by weight of the medium.

31. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium additionally comprises at least one compound selected from formulae O-10a to O-10b and at least one compound selected from formulae O-17z to O-17d: ##STR00509##

32. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 31, wherein the total amount of compounds of formulae O-10a and/or O-10b and compounds of the formulae O-17a to O-17d combined is 5-40% by weight of the medium.

33. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 31, wherein said medium contains at least one compound of formula O-10a and at least one compound of formula O-17a.

34. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 33, wherein the total amount of compounds of formulae O-10a and O-17a combined is 15-35% by weight of the medium.

35. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 31, wherein said medium contains at least one compound of formula O-10b and at least one compound of formula O-17a.

36. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 35, wherein the total amount of compounds of formulae O-10b and O-17a combined is 15-35% by weight of the medium.

37. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 31, wherein said medium contains at least one compound of formula O-10a, at least one compound of formula O-10b, and at least one compound of formula O-17a.

38. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 37, wherein the total amount of compounds of formulae O-10a, O-10b and O-17a combined is 15-35% by weight of the medium.

39. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium additionally comprises at least one compound selected from formulae O-6, O-7, O-10, and O-17 ##STR00510## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denotes H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 15 C atoms which is unsubstituted, monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals are each optionally replaced by O, S, ##STR00511## C?C, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, OCO or OCO in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another.

40. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 39, wherein in the compounds formulae O-6, O-7 and O-17, R.sup.1 is alkyl having 1-6 C atoms or alkenyl having 2-6 C atoms, and R.sup.2 is alkenyl having 2-6 C atoms, and in the compounds of formula O-10, R.sup.1 is alkyl having 1-6 C atoms or alkenyl having 2-6 C atoms, and R.sup.2 is alkyl having 1-6 C atoms.

41. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein the total amount of compounds of formulae BC, CR, PH-1, PH-2, BF-1, BF-2, BS-1 and BS-2 is 3 to 20% by weight of the medium.

42. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein the compounds of formulae BC, CR, BF-1 and BS-1 are selected from the compounds formulae BC-1 to BC-7, CR-1 to CR-5, BF-1a to BF-1c-, BS-1a to BS-1c, ##STR00512## ##STR00513## in which alkyl and alkyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkyl radical having 1-6 C atoms, and alkenyl and alkenyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkenyl radical having 2-6 C atoms.

43. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises one, two or three compounds selected from formulae BC-2, BF-1 and BF-2.

44. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises one or more compounds of formula In, ##STR00514## in which R.sup.11, R.sup.12, R.sup.13 each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl or alkenyl radical having 1-6 C atoms, R.sup.12 and R.sup.13 additionally may denote halogen, ##STR00515## i denotes 0, 1 or 2.

45. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises one or more compounds of formula I in which L.sup.1 is F, L.sup.2 is F, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.1*are each alkoxy; one or more compounds of formula CPY-n-Om ##STR00516## wherein m and n each denote 1-15, in concentrations >5% based on the mixture as a whole; one or more compounds of formula CY-n-Om ##STR00517## wherein m and n each denote 1-15, in concentrations >5% based on the mixture as a whole; one or more compounds of formula CCY-n-Om ##STR00518## wherein m and n each denote 1-15, in concentrations >5% based on the mixture as a whole; one or more compounds of formula CLY-n-Om ##STR00519## wherein m and n each denote 1-15, in concentrations >5% based on the mixture as a whole; and/or one or more compounds of formula CK-n-F ##STR00520## wherein n denotes 1-15, in concentrations >5% based on the mixture as a whole.

46. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises one or more compounds of formula CPY-n-Om and one or more compounds of formula CY-n-Om ##STR00521## wherein m and n each denote 1-6; one or more compounds of formula CPY-n-Om and one or more compounds of formula CK-n-F ##STR00522## wherein m and n each denote 1-6; one or more compounds of formula Y-nO-Om ##STR00523## wherein m and n each denote 1-6; one or more compounds of formula CPY-n-Om and one or more compounds of formula PY-n-Om ##STR00524## wherein m and n each denote 1-6; one or more compounds of formula CPY-n-Om and one or more compounds of formula CLY-n-Om ##STR00525## wherein m and n each denote 1-6; one or more compounds of formula CCVC-n-V ##STR00526## wherein n denotes 1-6; one or more compounds of formula CCC-n-V ##STR00527## wherein n denotes 1-6; and/or a compound of formula CC-V-V ##STR00528##

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium comprises at least one compound selected from the compounds of formulae T-20, T-21, IIA-26, IIA-28, IIIA-33, IIA-39, IIA-50, IIA-51, IIB-16, BF-1, BF-2, V-10, O-6a, L-4, CC-3-V1, IIB-11 and Z-9: ##STR00529## ##STR00530## in which R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.10 each, independently of one another, denote H, an alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 15 C atoms which is unsubstituted, or monosubstituted by CN or CF.sub.3 or at least monosubstituted by halogen, where, in addition, one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals are each optionally replaced by O, S, ##STR00531## C?C, CF.sub.2O, OCF.sub.2, OCO or OCO in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, alkyl and alkyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkyl radical having 1-6 C atoms, alkenyl and alkenyl* each, independently of one another, denote a straight-chain alkenyl radical having 2-6 C atoms, (O)alkyl, (O)-alkyl and (O)alkyl* each, independently of one another, denote alkyl or O-alkyl, (O)alkenyl* denotes alkenyl or O-alkenyl, m denotes 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, n denotes 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, x denotes 1 to 6, c denotes 0, 1 or 2 d denotes 1 or 2.

48. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, wherein said medium further comprises one or more polymerizable compounds selected from the compounds of formula M
