Abstract

Liquid-crystalline (LC) media having positive dielectric anisotropy and liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) containing these media, especially displays addressed by an active matrix and in particular to LC displays of the TN, PS-TN, STN, TN-TFT, OCB, IPS, PS-IPS, FFS, HB-FFS, XB-FFS, PS-FFS, SA-HB-FFS, SA-XB-FFS, polymer stabilised SA-HB-FFS, polymer stabilised SA-XB-FFS, positive VA or positive PS-VA type.

Claims

1. A liquid-crystalline medium, wherein the medium has positive dielectric anisotropy and comprises one or more compounds of formula I ##STR00431## in which the individual radicals, on each occurrence identically or differently, and each, independently of one another, have the following meaning: R.sup.0 is a straight chain, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkoxy radical that is unsubstituted or halogenated and has 1 to 15 C atoms, where one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00432## —C≡C—, —CF.sub.2O—, —OCF.sub.2—, —CH═CH—, —O—, CO—O— or —O—CO— in such a way that 0 atoms are not linked directly to one another, Y.sup.1, Y.sup.2 are, independently, H, F or Cl, with at least one of Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 being different from H, and Y5 is H or CH.sub.3.

2. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which comprises one or more compounds of formula I selected from the group consisting of the following subformulae ##STR00433## ##STR00434## wherein Y.sup.5 is H or CH.sub.3.

3. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which further comprises one or more compounds selected from the following formulae ##STR00435## wherein “alkyl” is C.sub.1-6-alkyl.

4. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 3, which comprises one or more compounds selected from the following subformulae ##STR00436##

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which further comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following formulae ##STR00437## in which the individual radicals, on each occurrence identically or differently, and each, independently of one another, have the following meaning: ##STR00438## ##STR00439## R.sup.1, R.sup.2 independently have one of the meanings given for R.sup.0 in claim 1, R.sup.3 has one of the meanings given for R.sup.1 or X.sup.1, X.sup.1 is fluorinated alkyl or alkoxy with 1, 2 or 3 C atoms, Z.sup.x, Z.sup.y independently are —CH.sub.2CH.sub.2—, —CH═CH—, —CF.sub.2O—, —OCF.sub.2—, —CH.sub.2O—, —OCH.sub.2—, —CO—O—, —O—CO—, —C.sub.2F.sub.4—, —CF═CF—, —CH═CH—CH.sub.2O—, or a single bond, Z.sup.z is CH.sub.2O or a single bond, Y.sup.1 is O or S, L.sup.1-4 is H, F or Cl, x, y independently are 0, 1 or 2, with x+y≤3, and z is 0 or 1, wherein in formula B the dibenzofuran or dibenzothiophene group may also be further substituted by a methyl or methoxy group, and wherein the compounds of formula Y contain at least one substituent L.sup.1-4 that is F or Cl.

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 5, which comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following subformulae ##STR00440## wherein L.sup.1, L.sup.2, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, Z.sup.x, Z.sup.y, x and y have the meanings given in claim 5, a denotes 1 or 2, b denotes 0 or 1, ##STR00441## denotes ##STR00442## and L.sup.3, L.sup.4 independently denote F or Cl.

7. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 5, which comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following subformulae ##STR00443## wherein L.sup.1, L.sup.2, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 have the meanings given in claim 5, and ##STR00444## each, independently of one another, denote ##STR00445## in which L.sup.5 denotes F or Cl and L.sup.6 denotes F, Cl, OCF.sub.3, CF.sub.3, CH.sub.3, CH.sub.2F or CHF.sub.2.

8. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 5, which comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following subformulae ##STR00446## wherein L.sup.1, L.sup.2, R.sup.1, R.sup.3 and X.sup.1 have the meanings given in claim 5.

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 5, which comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following subformulae ##STR00447## wherein R.sup.1 and X.sup.1 have the meanings given in claim 5, “alkyl” denotes a straight-chain alkyl radical having 1-6 C atoms, and (O) denotes an oxygen atom or a single bond.

10. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which further comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following formulae ##STR00448## wherein the individual radicals, independently of each other and on each occurrence identically or differently, have the following meanings ##STR00449## R.sup.0 has one of the meanings given in claim 1, X.sup.0 is F, Cl, CN, SF.sub.5, SCN, NCS, a halogenated alkyl radical, a halogenated alkenyl radical, a halogenated alkoxy radical or a halogenated alkenyloxy radical having 1 to 6 C atoms, Y.sup.1-6 independently are H or F, and Y.sup.0 H or CH.sub.3.

11. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which additionally comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following formulae ##STR00450## in which R.sup.0, Y.sup.1, Y.sup.2 and Y.sup.5 have the meanings given in claim 1, Y.sup.3 and Y.sup.4 have independently of each other one of the meanings given for Y.sup.1, X.sup.0 is F, Cl, CN, SF.sub.5, SCN, NCS, a halogenated alkyl radical, a halogenated alkenyl radical, a halogenated alkoxy radical or a halogenated alkenyloxy radical having 1 to 6 C atoms, Z.sup.0 denotes —C.sub.2H.sub.4—, —(CH.sub.2).sub.4—, —CH═CH—, —CF═CF—, —C.sub.2F.sub.4—, —CH.sub.2CF.sub.2—, —CF.sub.2CH.sub.2—, —CH.sub.2O—, —OCH.sub.2—, —COO— or —OCF.sub.2—, in formulae V and VI also a single bond, in formulae V and VIII also —CF.sub.2O—, r denotes 0 or 1, and s denotes 0 or 1.

12. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 11, which comprises one or more compounds selected from group consisting of the following formulae ##STR00451##

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which further comprises one or more compounds selected from group consisting of the following formulae ##STR00452## in which X.sup.0 is F, Cl, CN, SF.sub.5, SCN, NCS, a halogenated alkyl radical, a halogenated alkenyl radical, a halogenated alkoxy radical or a halogenated alkenyloxy radical having 1 to 6 C atoms, L denotes H or F, “alkyl” denotes C.sub.1-6-alkyl, R′ denotes methyl, C.sub.4-6-alkyl or C.sub.1-6-alkoxy, wherein, if R′ different from C.sub.1-6 alkoxy, then “alkyl” in formula IX is not ethyl or propyl, R″ denotes C.sub.1-6-alkyl, C.sub.1-6-alkoxy or C.sub.2-6-alkenyl, and “alkenyl” and “alkenyl*” each, independently of one another, denote C.sub.2-6-alkenyl, and in formula X “alkenyl” denotes C.sub.3-6 alkenyl.

14. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which further comprises one or more compounds of the formula XIV ##STR00453## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each, independently of one another, denote n-alkyl, alkoxy, oxaalkyl, fluoroalkyl or alkenyl, each having 1 to 6 C atoms.

15. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which further comprises one or more compounds of the formula XVI ##STR00454## in which L denotes H or F, and R.sup.1, R.sup.2 are, independently, a straight chain, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkoxy radical that is unsubstituted or halogenated and has 1 to 15 C atoms, where one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00455## —C≡C—, —CF.sub.2O—, —OCF.sub.2—, —CH═CH—, —O—, —CO—O— or —O—CO— in such a way that 0 atoms are not linked directly to one another.

The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which further comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following formulae ##STR00456## in which denotes H or F, and R.sup.1, R.sup.2 are, independently, a straight chain, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkoxy radical that is unsubstituted or halogenated and has 1 to 15 C atoms, where one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00457## —C≡C—, —CF.sub.2O—, —OCF.sub.2—, —CH═CH—, —O—, —CO—O— or —O—CO— in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another.

17. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which further comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following formulae ##STR00458## in which R.sup.0 is a straight chain, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkoxy radical that is unsubstituted or halogenated and has 1 to 15 C atoms, where one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00459## —C≡C—, —CF.sub.2O—, —OCF.sub.2——CH═CH—, —O—, —CO—O— or —O—CO— in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, X.sup.0 is F, Cl, CN, SF.sub.5, SCN, NCS, a halogenated alkyl radical, a halogenated alkenyl radical, a halogenated alkoxy radical or a halogenated alkenyloxy radical having 1 to 6 C atoms, Y.sup.1-5 independently are H or F.

18. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which further comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following formulae ##STR00460## in which R.sup.1 is a straight chain, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkoxy radical that is unsubstituted or halogenated and has 1 to 15 C atoms, where one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00461## —C≡C—, —CF.sub.2O—, —OCF.sub.2—, —CH≡CH—, —O—, —CO—O— or —O—CO— in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another, and X.sup.0 is F, Cl, CN, SF.sub.5, SCN, NCS, a halogenated alkyl radical, a halogenated alkenyl radical, a halogenated alkoxy radical or a halogenated alkenyloxy radical having 1 to 6 C atoms.

19. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which further comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of the following formulae ##STR00462## in which\ L denotes H or F, and R.sup.1, R.sup.2 are, independently, a straight chain, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkoxy radical that is unsubstituted or halogenated and has 1 to 15 C atoms, where one or more CH.sub.2 groups in these radicals may each be replaced, independently of one another, by ##STR00463## —C≡C—, —CF.sub.2O—, —OCF.sub.2—, —CH═CH—, —O—, —CO—O— or —O—CO— in such a way that O atoms are not linked directly to one another.

20. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, which additionally comprises one or more polymerizable compounds.

21. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 20, wherein the polymerizable compounds are selected from formula M

22. The liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 21, wherein the polymerizable compounds are polymerized.

23. Process for the preparation of a liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1, comprising mixing one or more compounds of the formula I with one or more other liquid crystalline compounds.

24. An electro-optical device which comprises a liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1.

25. The electro-optical device according to claim 24, which is a device selected from: shutter glasses, LC windows, devices for 3D applications, and LC displays operating in one of the following modes TN, PS-TN, STN, TN-TFT, OCB, IPS, PS-IPS, FFS, HB-FFS, XB-FFS, PS-HB-FFS, PS-XB-FFS, SA-HB-FFS, SA-XB-FFS, polymer stabilised SA-HB-FFS, polymer stabilised SA-XB-FFS, positive VA or positive PS-VA.

26. An electro-optical liquid-crystal display containing a liquid-crystalline medium according to claim 1.

27. Electro-optical liquid-crystal display according to claim 26, which is a TN, PS-TN, STN, TN-TFT, OCB, IPS, PS-IPS, FFS, HB-FFS, XB-FFS, PS-HB-FFS, PS-XB-FFS, SA-HB-FFS, SA-XB-FS, polymer stabilised SA-HB-FFS, polymer stabilised SA-XB-FFS, positive VA or positive PS-VA display.

28. Electro-optical liquid-crystal display according to claim 27, which is an FFS, HB-FFS, XB-FFS, PS-HB-FFS, PS-XB-FFS, IPS or PS-IPS display.
