Abstract
An aluminum bottle outsert comprising an inner surface having a constant diameter portion and an outer surface having a threaded portion wherein the inner surface constant diameter portion is axially coextensive with the outer surface threaded portion.
Claims
1. An aluminum bottle outsert comprising: an annular inner surface having an upper constant diameter portion; and a lower generally downwardly and outwardly flaring varying diameter portion; and an annular outer surface comprising a threaded portion adapted to receive a wine bottle screw top capping assembly; said threaded portion of said annular outer surface being positioned opposite said upper constant diameter portion of said annular inner surface.
2. The aluminum bottle outsert of claim 1, wherein said outsert is adapted to be received on an aluminum bottle neck having an upper constant diameter neck portion with said upper generally constant diameter portion of said outsert inner surface positioned radially adjacent said upper constant diameter neck portion of the aluminum bottle.
3. The aluminum bottle outsert of claim 2, said annular outer surface of said outsert comprising a smooth lower surface portion positioned below said threaded portion.
4. The aluminum bottle outsert of claim 3, said lower generally downwardly and outwardly flaring varying diameter portion of said annular inner surface of said outsert being adapted to engage a lower varying diameter portion of the aluminum bottle neck to limit downward displacement of said outsert on said aluminum bottle neck.
5. The aluminum bottle assembly of claim 4, said outsert having a lower annular wall portion defined by said lower varying diameter portion of said inner surface and said smooth lower surface portion of said outer surface, said lower annular wall portion tapering from an upper end to a lower end thereof
6. The outsert of claim 1, said annular outer surface threaded portion adapted to receive a Stelvin-type capsule.
7. A method of capping an aluminum wine bottle having a neck with an upper constant diameter portion and a lower variable diameter portion comprising: attaching an outsert to the neck of the aluminum wine bottle with a threaded outer surface portion of the outsert located radially adjacent to the bottle neck upper constant diameter portion; and attaching a wine bottle capping assembly to the outsert.
8. The method of claim 7 wherein attaching an outsert to a bottle neck portion comprises sliding the outsert downwardly on the bottle neck until a lower variable diameter inner surface portion of the outsert contacts a flaring surface of the bottle preventing further downward movement.
9. The method of claim 8 wherein attaching an outsert to a bottle neck portion further comprises forming a curl from an upper annular portion of the bottle neck that covers and engages a top surface portion of the outsert preventing upward displacement thereof.
10. The method of claim 7 wherein attaching a wine bottle capping assembly to the outsert comprises crimpingly urging an upper portion of the wine bottle capping assembly against an outer threaded surface of the outsert to form female threads conforming to the outer threaded surface of the outsert.
11. The method of claim 7 wherein attaching a wine bottle capping assembly to the outsert comprises crimpingly urging an upper portion of a Stelvin type capsule against an outer threaded surface of the outsert to form female threads in the Stelvin type capsule that conform to the outer threaded surface of the outsert.
12. The method of claim 7 wherein attaching an outsert to a bottle neck portion comprises sliding the outsert downwardly on the bottle neck until it contacts a flaring surface of the bottle that prevents further downward movement and forming a curl from an upper annular portion of the bottle neck that covers and engages a top surface portion of the outsert preventing upward displacement thereof and crimpingly urging an upper portion of the wine bottle capping assembly against an outer threaded surface of the outsert to form female threads conforming to the outer threaded surface of the outsert.
13. The method of claim 7 wherein attaching an outsert to a bottle neck portion comprises mechanically capturing it, between an upper constant diameter portion and a lower varying diameter portion of the bottle neck portion.
14. The method of claim 7 wherein attaching a wine bottle capping assembly to the outsert comprises threading a prethreaded upper portion of the wine bottle capping assembly onto an outer threaded surface of the outsert.
15. An aluminum bottle outsert comprising an inner surface having a constant diameter portion and an outer surface having a threaded portion wherein the inner surface constant diameter portion is axially coextensive with the outer surface threaded portion.

[0026] To produce the bottle/ST capsule assembly shown in
[0027] Next the circular bottom opening of the ST capsule 30 is placed over the outsert 40 and the ST capsule 30 is moved axially downwardly relative the outsert 40 and bottle neck portion 16 until the closed end 31 of the capsule 30 engages the curled/rolled portion 18 of the bottle neck portion 16. The ST capsule 30 is then rollingly crimped onto the outsert 40 and bottle neck portion 16 by a machine in the same manner as when it is crimped to the threaded end of a conventional threaded glass bottle. This crimping action forms corresponding female threads in the upper portion 32 of the capsule that provides a twist off cap. In an example embodiment in which the ST capsule 30 is a screw on type ST capsule, the capsule it is displaced downwardly until the threaded portion of the capsule 30 reaches the threaded portion of the outsert 40. Then the capsule 30 is screwed on to the outsert 40. With either the crimp on or the screw on type ST capsule 30, the perforated connecting portion 36 of the capsule is broken when a consumer twists off the upper portion 32. The upper portion 32 then acts as a reclosable twist cap.
