Abstract
Suggested is a cooling preparation comprising phenylalkenals and homovanillic acid esters.
Claims
1. A cooling preparation, comprising: (a) at least one phenylalkenal according to formula (I) ##STR00033## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 independently of one another represent hydrogen, a methyl or phenyl residue, R.sub.3 stands for hydrogen, a phenyl, an alkenyl or a linear or branched alkyl residue with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and the broken double lines represent, independently of one another, a single bond or a double bond, (b) at least one homovanillic acid ester according to formula (II) ##STR00034## wherein (i) R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 stand, irrespective of each other, for a hydrogen atom or an alkyl residue with 1-2 carbon atoms, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 stand, irrespective of each other, for a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl residue with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, a phenyl residue, an alkylphenyl residue or a phenylalkyl residue or a linear or branched alkenyl residue with 2 to 4 carbon atoms or an alkenylphenyl residue or a phenylalkenyl residue, or (ii) R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 along with the carbon atoms linking them form a cyclohexyl ring, which may be substituted by an additional residue R.sup.5, wherein R.sup.5 is an alkyl residue with 1-2 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl residue with 1-2 carbon atoms, R.sup.4 stands for a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl residue with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, a phenyl residue, an alkylphenyl residue or a phenylalkyl residue or a linear or branched alkenyl residue with 2 to 4 carbon atoms or an alkenylphenyl residue or a phenylalkenyl residue, or a physiologically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the phenolic hydroxy group in formula (I) is deprotonated, or a mixture, comprising one or more different compounds of formula (I) and/or one or more physiologically acceptable salts thereof, wherein each of the phenolic hydroxy group in formula (II) is deprotonated, or consists of a plurality of different compounds of formula (II) and/or salts thereof, wherein each of the phenolic hydroxy group in formula (II) is deprotonated, and optionally (c) at least one physiological cooling agent different from components (a) and (b).

The preparation of claim 1, comprising phenylalkenals of formula (I), in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are different and denote hydrogen or phenyl, R.sub.3 stands for hydrogen, an alkenyl or a linear or branched alkyl group with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and the broken double lines represent, independently of one another, a single bond or a double bond.
3. The preparation of claim 1, wherein the phenylalkenals of formula (I), which are selected from the group consisting of: TABLE-US-00056 No. Name Formula I-1 2-Phenyl-but-2-enal
4. The preparation of claim 1, comprising homovanillic acid esters of formula (II), wherein R.sup.4 represents a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl residue with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, a phenyl residue, an alkylphenyl residue or a phenylalkyl residue or a linear or branched alkenyl residue with 2 to 4 carbon atoms, or an alkenylphenyl residue or a phenylalkylene residue, or a physiologically acceptable salt thereof.

The preparation of claim 1, comprising homovanillic acid esters of formula (II), wherein (i) R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 stand, irrespective of each other, for a hydrogen atom or methyl group, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 stand, irrespective of each other, for a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl residue with 1 to 5 carbon atoms or a phenyl residue, an alkylphenyl residue or a phenylalkyl residue or an alkenylphenyl residue or a phenylalkenyl residue, or (ii) formula (II) corresponds to the following formula (lIa) ##STR00039## wherein R.sup.2 stands for a hydrogen atom, and R.sup.4 stands for 2-propyl.

The preparation of claim 1, comprising homovanillic acid esters of formula (II), wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each stand for a hydrogen atom, R.sup.3 stands for a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl residue with 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a phenyl residue, an alkylphenyl residue or a phenylalkyl residue or an alkenylphenyl residue or a phenylalkenyl residue, R.sup.4 stands for a hydrogen atom.
7. The preparation of claim 1, wherein said homovanillic acid esters are selected from the group consisting of: TABLE-US-00057 o. Name Formula I-1 2-phenylethyl-2-(4- hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) acetate
8. The preparation of claim 1, further comprising as component (c) physiological cooling agents selected from the group consisting of menthol and menthol derivatives, menthylethers, menthylesters, menthylcarbonates, the semi-esters of menthols with a dicarboxylic acid or derivatives thereof, menthanecarboxylic acid amides, menthone and menthone derivatives, 2,3-dimethyl-2-(2-propyl)-butyric acid derivatives, isopulegol or its esters, menthane derivatives, cubebol or synthetic or natural mixtures containing cubebol, pyrrolidone derivatives of cycloalkyldione derivatives or tetrahydropyrimidine-2-one oxamates and mixtures thereof.
9. The preparation of claim 7, wherein said addition physiological cooling agent are selected from the group consisting of menthol, menthyl lactate, menthyl acetate and L-menthone glycerol acetal/ketal and mixtures thereof.
10. The preparation of claim 1, comprising: (a) about 1:99 to about 99:1 wt.-percent at least one phenylalkenal according to formula (I); and (b) about 99:1 to about 1:99 wt.-percent at least one homovanillic acid esters of formula (II), on condition that the amounts add to 100 wt.-percent.
11. The preparation of claim 1, comprising: (a) about 0.2:2 to about 2:0.2 wt.-percent at least one phenylalkenal according to formula (I); (b) about 2:0.2 to about 0.2:2 wt.-percent at least one homovanillic acid esters of formula (II), and (c) up to 97.8 wt.-percent additional physiological cooling agents others than components (a) and (b), on condition that the amounts add to 100 wt.-percent.
12. A cosmetic and/or personal care composition comprising the cooling preparation of claim 1.
13. An oral composition comprising the cooling preparation of claim 1.
14. A method of providing a cooling sensation to human skin comprising the steps of: (a) providing a cooling preparation according to claim 1, and (b) applying said cooling preparation topically to human skin.
15. A method of providing a cooling sensation to a human mucous membrane comprising the steps of: (a) providing a cooling preparation according to claim 1, and (b) administering said preparation or composition orally.
16. A method comprising using a preparation according to claim 1 for making cosmetic, personal care or oral compositions.
17. The preparation of claim 4, wherein R.sup.4 represents the linear or branched alkyl residue with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, which is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, 1-propyl, 2 propyl, 1-butyl, 2-butyl, tert-butyl, 2-methylprop-1-yl, 1-, 2- or 3-pentyl, 2-methylbut-1-yl, 2-methylbut-2-yl, 3-methylbut-1-yl und 3-methylbut-2-yl, preferably methyl, ethyl, 1-propyl, 2-propyl, 1-butyl, 2-butyl, tert-butyl, 2-methylprop-1-yl and 1-pentyl.
18. The preparation of claim 4, wherein R.sup.4 represents the linear or branched alkenyl residue with 2 to 4 carbon atoms, which is selected from the group consisting of ethenyl, prop-2-en 1-yl, prop-1-en-1-yl, prop-1-en-2-yl, 1- or 2-cyclopropenyl, but-1-en-1-yl, but-1-en-2-yl, 4 but-1-en-3-yl, but-2-en-1-yl, but-3-en-1-yl, but-2-en-2-yl, 2-methylprop-1-en-1-yl, 2 methylprop-2-en-1-yl, 1,3-butadien-1-yl, 1,3-butadien-2-yl, and the possible Z and E isomers in each case.

Example 1
Long Lasting Cooling Sensation
[0326] Phenylalkennals and homovanillic acid esters were added alone and in combination to a standard toothpaste composition. A panel of 5 experienced testers evaluated the compositions with regard to initial cooling effect during brushing, directly after brushing and the long last effect after 5 and after 10 minutes. The evaluation was done according to a score card from 1=almost no cooling effect to 10=strong cooling sensation. The results are provided in Table 1. Example 1 is according to the invention, examples C1 to C3 serve for comparison.

Phenylbutenal and homovanillic acid propylphenyl ester 5% in propylene glycol are obtainable in the market from Symrise AG.
Adding phenylbutenal to standard toothpaste improves the cooling sensation during and directly after brushing, but does not have any long lasting effect. Homovanillic acid propylphenyl ester 5% in propylene glycol provides a warming agent and does not have any effect when added alone.
Combining phenylbutenal and homovanillic acid propylphenyl ester, however, leads to a serious improvement in long lasting cooling sensation, both when determined after 5 and after 10 minutes.
Formulation Examples for Cosmetic Compositions
[0327] The following examples F1 to F59 show various formulations for cosmetic and oral compositions. Formulation 1 stands for a mixture of menthol 48%, phenylbutenal 1.6% and homovanillic acid propylphenyl ester 0.2% and 51.2% of a flavor or fragrance composition.
