Abstract
A system is provided for interconnecting a ladder to a vehicle. The system may include a first portion for interconnecting to an upper portion of a vehicle rear door and a second portion for interconnecting to a lower portion of the vehicle rear door. The system provides a ladder interconnection wherein no penetrations are made into the vehicle.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein said one-piece hanger plate and said clamp are configured to releasably interconnect to the vehicle without requiring any penetration of the vehicle.
5. The system of claim 1, wherein said member adapted to selectively engage the rear door includes a pinch plate that selectively engages the rear door.
6. The system of claim 1, wherein said clamp includes a fourth portion interconnected to said third portion, and said fourth portion is interconnectable to the ladder.
7. (canceled)
8. An apparatus for providing access to an upper portion of a vehicle, comprising: a one-piece hanger plate adapted for interconnection to an upper portion of a rear door of the vehicle, said one-piece hanger plate having a first edge with a portion adapted for engaging the upper portion of the rear door, said one-piece hanger plate having a means for securing a ladder; a one-piece clamp adapted for interconnection to a lower portion of the rear door, said one-piece clamp including: a first plate with an aperture; a second plate which is generally planar, said first plate extending upwardly from said second plate; and a third plate which extends upwardly from said second plate, wherein said aperture of said first plate is oriented toward said third plate; and a ladder having an upper bracket configured to engage with said means for securing a ladder of said one-piece hanger plate, and a lower bracket configured to be engaged by said one-piece clamp.
9. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising a first spacer to be positioned between the rear door and said lower bracket of said ladder, and a second spacer to be positioned between said one-piece hanger plate and the rear door.
10. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein at least a portion of said portion adapted for engaging the upper portion of the rear door is curled.
11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said portion adapted for engaging the upper portion of the rear door is adapted to wrap around an upper edge of the rear door.
12. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein said one-piece hanger plate and said one-piece clamp are configured to interconnect to the vehicle without penetrating the vehicle.
13. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising a pinch plate adapted to be positioned between said first plate and the lower portion of the rear door.
14. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein said one-piece clamp includes a fourth plate extending outwardly from said third plate.
15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said fourth plate includes at least one aperture for a fixture to interconnect said one-piece clamp to said lower bracket of said ladder.
16. (canceled)
17. (canceled)

19. (canceled)
20. A one-piece hanger plate adapted to secure a ladder to an upper portion of a rear door of a vehicle, comprising: a plate having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge, and a forth edge, said first edge adapted to engage an upper edge of the rear door, said second edge adapted for positioning adjacent to an outer upper edge of the rear door, and said third edge and said fourth edge interconnecting said first edge and said second edge; a curled portion extending from said first edge, said curled portion configured to wrap around the upper edge of the rear door, wherein said curled portion extends below a lower surface of said plate; a spacer selectively interconnectable to said lower surface of said plate; and at least one stud extending outwardly from said plate, said stud adapted to receive an upper portion of the ladder.
21. The hanger plate of claim 20, wherein a free end of said curled portion extends toward said third edge.
22. The hanger plate of claim 20, wherein said curled portion comprises a first curled portion adjacent to said second edge and a second curled portion adjacent to said fourth edge.
23. The hanger plate of claim 20, wherein said curled portion extends from said second edge to said fourth edge.
24. The hanger plate of claim 20, wherein said curled portion extends at least 50% of the distance between said second edge to said fourth edge.
25. The hanger plate of claim 20, wherein said curled portion is configured to receive a set screw oriented toward said lower surface of said plate.

[0052] Although the hanger plates described above include at least one stud that receives and secures the ladder, those of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that the ladder may be hung from the hanger plate in other ways. For example, the hanger plate of one embodiment of the present invention includes a peg or pegs that extend from the hanger plate that are received into recesses or slots provided in the ladder upper portion, wherein nuts are not required to secure the ladder. Alternatively, the ladder upper portion may include one or more pegs, or other type of protrusion, that fit into cavities, holes, or slots, provided in the hanger plate. The ladder upper portion may include a hook or curled portion that fits within a cavity, fits within a hole, or engages onto a complementary hook on the hanger plate. The hanger plate may have an extended cavity that receives the complementary extension protruding from the upper ladder portion, or vice versa. In some embodiments, the interconnection between the upper ladder portion and the hanger plate allows some adjustment of ladder position along the lateral direction of the vehicle. For example, the area of engagement between the hanger plate and the upper letter portion may include slotted holes, serrations, or other mechanisms known in the art that allow minute adjustments between interconnected components. Stated in general, one of skill in the art should appreciate upon review of this disclosure that the method of interconnection between the ladder and a hanger plate may not be relevant in some embodiments of the present invention. This is because the primary purpose of the hanger plate is to allow a ladder to hang therefrom.
