DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

(11) For the purposes of promoting an understanding of the principles of the embodiments described herein, reference is now made to the drawings and descriptions in the following written specification. No limitation to the scope of the subject matter is intended by the references. This disclosure also includes any alterations and modifications to the illustrated embodiments and includes further applications of the principles of the described embodiments as would normally occur to one skilled in the art to which this document pertains.

(12) As best shown in FIGS. 2-9, one presently preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a stabilizer bracket 30 for use in connection with an e-poll book system 10 having a tablet computer 12 and encoder 20. The stabilizer bracket 30 includes a first, primary opening or pocket 31 that is sized to receive the body of the encoder 20 therein. The front face of the opening 31 may further include an opening that allows the user to see the front face of the encoder 20, and the encoder indicator light, when the stabilizer bracket 30 is installed.

(13) A pair of tabs 32a, 32b extend from the rear face of the stabilizing bracket 30 to provide stability. According to one presently preferred embodiment, the tabs 32a, 32b extend approximately 1? over the edge of the e-poll book tablet 12 when installed to achieve the desired stability. A second pair of tabs 33a, 33b extend from the front face of the stabilizing bracket to provide enhanced stability while not interfering with the operations of the e-poll book. According to one preferred embodiment, the second pair of tabs 33a, 33b each extend approximately ? over the edge of the e-poll book tablet 12 when installed.

(14) As best shown in FIG. 4 and FIG. 8, the space 34 between rear tabs 32a, 32b and front tabs 33a, 33b is contoured to match the outer contour of the e-poll book tablet 12 to provide further stability. By mounting flush against the side of the e-poll book tablet 12, at the point where the encoder 20 plugs in, side-to-side stability for the encoder 20 is provided.

(15) A small step-like protrusion 35 that extends from the rear face of the stabilizer bracket into the primary opening 31 may be provided. This feature allows for the stabilizer bracket 30 to be used with existing e-poll book tablet case 13, also known as a sled.

(16) An opening 36 is provided in a side wall of the stabilizer bracket to allow for power connection to encoder via a power supply cable 40, which can be plugged in when the stabilizer bracket is used. The power cable opening 36 secures the power cable 40 and prevents connectivity issues.

(17) As best shown in FIG. 4, the stabilizer bracket 30 includes a slot 37 in the bottom surface thereof. When the stabilizer bracket 30 is installed, as best shown in FIG. 9, the slot 37 in the stabilizer bracket 30 aligns with the voter access card encoder slot 24 provided in the end of the encoder 20. The slot 37 may be beveled (not shown) to allow for easier insertion of the vote card into the encoder 20. The slot 37 acts as a guide for the card to be easily inserted into the encoder 20.

(18) As best shown in FIG. 3, the interior of the opening 31 in the stabilizer bracket 30 includes a step 38 that allows for removal of the encoder 20 from the stabilizer bracket 30. Accordingly, no tools are required to remove the encoder 20 from the bracket 30.

(19) The over-all design of the stabilizer bracket 30 allows for the encoder 20 to be securely mounted to the e-poll book tablet 12. The opening 31 in the stabilizer bracket 30 is sized so that the encoder 20 fits snuggly into the bracket 30. The small design of the stabilizer bracket 30 allows it to be easily stored in the existing e-poll book carrying case provided by the manufacturer.

(20) This detailed description, and particularly the specific details of the exemplary embodiment disclosed, is given primarily for clearness of understanding and no unnecessary limitations are to be understood therefrom, for modifications will become evident to those skilled in the art upon reading this disclosure and may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the claimed invention.
