Abstract
Implementations of the disclosure relate to tea bags that are splitable into multiple self-contained smaller portions. Smaller quantities of tea leaves are individually sealed in compartments of a tea bag with a mechanism for splitting built into the tea bag. In one embodiment, the mechanism for splitting can be pre-formed perforations along an axis of symmetry. The perforations can also be along some asymmetrical axis to divide the tea bag into inequal smaller portions. In some embodiments, the mechanism for splitting may not involve a tear, but just a separation of the smaller portions by imparting slight force by hand.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0024] Embodiments of the present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the drawings, which are provided as illustrative examples so as to enable those skilled in the art to practice the embodiments. Notably, the figures and examples below are not meant to limit the scope to a single embodiment, but other embodiments are possible by way of interchange of some or all of the described or illustrated elements. Wherever convenient, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to same or like parts. Where certain elements of these embodiments can be partially or fully implemented using known components, only those portions of such known components that are necessary for an understanding of the embodiments will be described, and detailed descriptions of other portions of such known components will be omitted so as not to obscure the description of the embodiments. In the present specification, an embodiment showing a singular component should not be considered limiting; rather, the scope is intended to encompass other embodiments including a plurality of the same component, and vice-versa, unless explicitly stated otherwise herein. Moreover, applicants do not intend for any term in the specification or claims to be ascribed an uncommon or special meaning unless explicitly set forth as such. Further, the scope encompasses present and future known equivalents to the components referred to herein by way of illustration.

[0027] The splitable tea bag 200 shown here can be split into two portions 200a and 200b, though in other embodiments the tea bag 200 can be split into more than two portions. Each of the two portions 200a and 200b are self-contained, i.e., the respective quantities of tea 202a and 202b will not spill out if the splitable tea bag 200 is split into two portions 200a and 200b. This is because quantities of tea 202a and 202b are have peripheral seals 203. In other words, each of the portions 200a and 200b are individually sealed and put together into one tea bag 200. Each portion 200a and 200b can have their own dipping strings 201a and 201b attached.
[0028] The splitable tea bag 200 can be ripped along the axis 204 in the middle (though it does not have to be exactly in the middle). Seal 203 spans in the middle of the tea bag 200 around the axis 204. There may be pre-formed perforations along the axis 204. The total quantity of tea (i.e., when 202a and 202b are added together), would be substantially similar to the quantity of tea 102 contained in the conventional tea bag 100 shown in
[0029] In one embodiment, a conventional tea bag 100 can be a starting point to create a splitable tea bag. One can divide the tea contained inside a conventional tea bag to two sides of the tea bag by manipulating and pushing with fingers from outside without breaking the pouch's seal, thus creating a tea-leaf-free region around the axis 204. Then a sealing mechanism can be applied around the axis 204 to create two individually sealed smaller portions 200a and 200b.
[0030] In another embodiment, a splitable tea bag is made from scratch. First, an empty tea bag is made with peripheral seals to be able to hold tea leaves inside. Before putting tea leaves inside, an additional seal is created in the middle to divide the tea bag into two empty compartments, each empty compartment having an opening to add tea leaves. This is followed by adding respective amounts of tea leaves into the two empty compartments through the respective openings, and then sealing the respective openings to create two individually sealed compartments filled with the respective amounts of tea leaves. Finally a splitting mechanism is incorporated in the tea bag (e.g., adding a line of perforations along an axis of the additional seal in the middle).
[0031] In some embodiments, smaller portions (compartments) 200a and 200b can contain two different varieties of tea. When the entire tea bag 200 is immersed in hot water, the two different varieties blend together to create a third variety with unique flavor. Or, when ripped apart, the two portions 200a and 200b produce different varieties of tea.

[0040] As persons skilled in the art would appreciate in view of the present disclosure, the ability to split a tea bag into multiple splitable portions creates the flexibility of usage for a tea drinker. If the drinker is in the mood to drink a big cup of tea, he/she can use the entire tea bag (before split). If the drinker is in the mood to drink a smaller cup of tea, he/she can split the tea bag and use one smaller portion first, and save the other portion for later use. Or, two people can share one tea bag, each using a split portion at the same time. This design might be a good solution in certain scenarios, for example, during pandemic when contact and sharing is minimized.
