Stannous Salt and Sodium Tripolyphosphate Oral Care Compositions and Methods

Abstract

Oral care compositions containing a stannous salt and sodium tripolyphosphate are provided where stannous tripolyphosphate ionic intermediates comprise less than about 1% of the compositions. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate, a methylvinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer and/or a silica oral polishing agent may be added for further efficacy. In a single phase blend, the oral care composition may be effectively limited to comprise less than about 10% water. In a dual-phase blend, a mixture having the stannous salt in a first phase and the sodium tripolyphosphate in a second phase may be generated from a dual chamber storage tube (with each phase provided from a separate chamber) immediately prior to dental care usage.

19. An oral care composition comprising: from about 0.01 to about 5% of a stannous salt; a thickening system comprising a cellulosic polymer; and an adhesion system comprising: a film forming material; and a hydrophilic organic polymer.

20. The oral care composition according to claim 19, comprising from about 0.1 to about 3% of a stannous salt.

21. The oral care composition according to claim 19, further comprising about 1% of a stannous salt.

22. The oral care composition according to claim 19, wherein the stannous salt is selected from: stannous fluoride; stannous chloride; an organic stannous carboxylate salt; stannous ethylene glyoxide; and mixtures thereof.

23. The oral care composition according to claim 19, wherein the composition comprises a mixture of two stannous salts.

24. The oral care composition according to claim 23, wherein one of the two stannous salts comprises stannous fluoride.

25. The oral care composition according to claim 19, wherein the composition is in a form selected from: a dentifrice; a rinse; a gel; and a paint.

26. The oral care composition according to claim 19, wherein the thickening system further comprises a thickening agent selected from: a carboxyvinyl polymer; a carrageenan; a natural gum; colloidal magnesium aluminum silicate; colloidal silica; and a combination of two or more thereof.

27. The oral care composition according to claim 26, wherein the thickening agent comprises a carrageenan.

28. The oral care composition according to claim 19, further comprising an antibacterial agent.

29. The oral care composition according to claim 19, further comprising a chelating system.

30. The oral care composition according to claim 28, wherein the chelating system comprises tetrasodium pyrophosphate.

31. The oral care composition according to claim 19, wherein the film forming material comprises a methylvinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer represented by formula (I): ##STR00002## wherein n is an integer that provides a molecular weight of said copolymer of about 60,000 to about 500,000.

32. The oral care composition according to claim 19, wherein the hydrophilic organic polymer comprises polyvinylpyrrolidone.

33. The oral care composition according to claim 19, further comprising an abrasive system comprising a combination of silicas.

34. The oral care composition according to claim 33, wherein the combination of silicas comprises a high cleaning silica.

35. The oral care composition according to claim 19, further comprising a pyrophosphate salt of a divalent metal ion.

36. A method of treating or preventing an disorder or condition of the oral cavity comprising administering an oral care composition according to claim 19, to the oral cavity of a subject in need thereof.

37. A method of providing a cosmetic benefit to the oral cavity, comprising administering an oral care composition according to claim 19, to the oral cavity of a subject in need thereof.
