Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a lithium oxygen battery with a non-aqueous flowable semi-solid catholyte comprising an electrolyte, dissolved oxygen and carbonaceous particles which are not soluble in the catholyte. The battery also comprises a lithium anode, electrical contacts, an oxygen inlet, a porous cathode current collector and a pump. The oxygen-enriched catholyte is pumped through the cell of the battery and the oxygen redox reaction may take place on the carbonaceous particles which form a conducting percolating network. Also disclosed is a semi-solid, non-aqueous catholyte comprising an electrolyte, dissolved oxygen and carbonaceous particles; the use of the lithium oxygen battery; and the use in electric vehicle and for stationary applications.

Claims

1. A lithium oxygen battery comprising a lithium anode and a non-aqueous semi-solid flowable catholyte, said non-aqueous semi-solid flowable catholyte comprising an electrolyte, dissolved oxygen and carbonaceous particles.

2. The lithium oxygen battery of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte is selected from the group comprising TEGDME, LiTFSI, ionic liquids, dimethyl sulfoxide, and mixtures thereof.

3. The lithium oxygen battery of claim 1, wherein the catholyte contains between 110.sup.3 and 2010.sup.3 mol/L of dissolved oxygen.

4. The lithium oxygen battery of claim 1, wherein the carbonaceous particles are insoluble in the catholyte.

5. The lithium oxygen battery of claim 1, wherein the carbonaceous particles are comprised of carbon.

6. The lithium oxygen battery of claim 1, wherein the carbonaceous particles are present in the catholyte in a % w/w of between 1 and 50% w/w.

7. The lithium oxygen battery of claim 1, further comprising a porous cathode current collector.

8. The lithium oxygen battery according to claim 7, wherein said porous cathode current collector comprises a porous material selected from the group comprising carbon paper, reticulated vitreous carbon, reticulated vitreous carbon coated with conductive carbon black, mesoporous carbons, activated carbons, nanostructured carbons and combinations thereof.

9. The lithium oxygen battery of claim 1, further comprising two electrical contacts.

10. The lithium oxygen battery according to claim 9, wherein one electrical contact is connected to a positive terminal of the battery and the other electrical contact is connected to a negative terminal of the battery.

11. The lithium oxygen battery according to claim 1, further comprising a separator, wherein the separator is preferably located between the lithium anode and the porous cathode current collector.

12. The lithium oxygen battery according to claim 1, further comprising a pump, wherein said pump circulates the catholyte in the battery.

13. A semi-solid, non-aqueous flowable catholyte, comprising an electrolyte, dissolved oxygen and carbonaceous particles.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0039] As described herein, the term lithium oxygen battery means a battery that uses oxidation of lithium at the anode and reduction of oxygen at the cathode to induce a current flow. A lithium oxygen battery may also be referred to as a lithium air battery.

[0040] As described herein, the term semi-solid catholyte or semi-solid flowable catholyte refers to a liquid electrolyte having insoluble solid particles dispersed therein.

[0041] As described herein, the term reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) means a foam of vitreous carbon, which is non-graphitic.

[0046] One aspect of the present disclosure is a lithium oxygen battery. The lithium oxygen battery comprises a cell through which a semi-solid catholyte flows. The battery may comprise a means for circulating the catholyte in the battery such as a pump, an oxygen or air inlet and two electrical contacts. In a preferred embodiment, one electrical contact is connected to the positive terminal of the battery and the other electrical contact is connected to the negative terminal of the battery. In one embodiment, the cell of the lithium oxygen battery comprises a lithium anode, a separator, and a porous cathode current collector, through which the catholyte flows. The catholyte may be directed into the cell using any suitable means, preferably by using a pump.

[0047] A preferred embodiment of the lithium oxygen battery 1 of the present disclosure is illustrated in FIG. 1. The preferred embodiment comprises a cell 2 through which a semi-solid catholyte 3 flows. The battery may comprise a means for circulating the catholyte in the battery such as a pump 4, an oxygen or air inlet 5 and two electrical contacts 6.

Furthermore, as the oxygen redox reaction occurs on the flowable carbonaceous particles, passivating species such as lithium oxides are removed far from the porous cathode current collector.

This avoids the buildup of lithium oxide species such as lithium peroxide and lithium superoxide, which occurs at fixed cathodes, thus reducing their discharge capacities.

EXAMPLES

[0084] Materials Used:

[0085] The electrolyte used was a solution of tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (Sigma-Aldrich, TEGDME, 99.0%): bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium salt (Sigma-Aldrich, LiTFSI, 99.0%) 9:1 molar ratio, which was prepared and stored in glove-box (MBraun, Ar atmosphere, H.sub.2O and O.sub.2<1 ppm). Before use, the water content of the solution was checked by Karl-Fishser titration (756/831 KF Coulometer-Metrohm) and was found to be 160 ppm.

[0086] The catholyte was prepared in a glove-box by adding Super-P (SP, 2% w/w, Erachem Comilog N.V., BET 65.5 m.sup.2/g) to the electrolyte. Prior to addition to the electrolyte, Super-P was dried under vacuum at 120 C. overnight (rotary evaporation).

[0087] The porous cathode current collectors used were Carbon Paper (CP, Spectracarb 2050, Spectracorp, thickness 40 mils, density 0.64 g/cc) and Reticulated Vitreous Carbon (RVC, ERG Aerospace Corporation, foam, 3% nominal density, 100 PPI) which were dried overnight under vacuum at 120 C. before use. The porous cathode current collector RVC was coated with SP carbon powder by drop casting 95% SP-5% Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF, Kynar HSV900) in N-methyl pyrrolidone inks (28 mg of SP per mL), followed by heating at 60 C. overnight. The label RVCSP indicates the SP-coated RVC electrode.

[0089] Methods of Measurement:

[0090] The oxygen redox reaction was investigated by galvanostatic measurements in a conventional, thermostated, 5 mL cell at CP (A=0.45 cm.sup.2) and RVCSP (A=0.6 cm.sup.2) electrodes and in a semi-flow cell with RVCSP (0.385 cm.sup.2 RVCSP geometric area, 30 mL of catholyte). The reference electrode was a silver wire in 6.Math.10.sup.2 M AgTFSI in PYR.sub.14TFSI; the electrode potentials were checked vs Li and are reported vs. the Li.sup.+/Li couple.

[0091] The electrochemical tests were performed with a PerkinElmer VSP multichannel potentiostat/galvanostat with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) module. EIS was performed in the 1 kHz-100 mHz frequency range with 5 mV AC perturbation and by taking 10 points/decade. The electrolyte and catholyte were saturated with O.sub.2 (g) (>99.999%, SIAD). Circulation of the catholyte through the semi-flow cell was achieved by a Watson-Marlow 1205/DV peristaltic pump operating at 200 rpm. The flow Li/O.sub.2 battery was assembled in dry box. A cross-shaped Teflon cell (BOLA) with 2 fiber glass separators (Whatman GF/F) and 4 stacked Lithium disks (>99%, 3.8.10.sup.2 g) was used.

[0092] X-ray diffraction measurements (XRD) were performed with PANalytical XPert PRO powder diffractometer equipped with a XCelerator detector (CuK radiation, =1.5406 , 40 mA, 40 kV), radiation source and Ni filter by continuous scanning mode (0.042 s.sup.1 scan rate, 0.052 step size).

[0093] FTIR analyses were carried by a Bruker Optics Tensor 27apparatus (2 cm.sup.1 resolution) TEM and SEM images were obtained by using a Philips CM100 (accelerating voltage 80 kV) and a Zeiss EVO 50, respectively.

Example 1. Preliminary Study

[0094] An experiment was performed in a 5 mL conventional electrochemical cell using electrolyte (TEGDME:LiTFSI 9:1 mol, LiTFSI concentration ca. 0.5 mol/L) or catholyte (TEGDME:LiTFSI 9:1 mol, 2% wt. SP). The electrolyte or catholyte were continuously fed with oxygen and were mechanically stirred to simulate flow cathode operative conditions. The porous cathode current collectors used were CP or RVCSP. A lithium counter electrode (separated by the cathode compartment via a porous frit) and an Ag-based reference electrode were used. The lithium counter electrode was a lithium foil (ca. 15 cm.sup.2) which was rolled around a glass rod and featured an area which was 10 times higher than that of the working electrode. Such approach was used for the basic studies in order to not limit working electrode operation.

[0095] The results reported in FIG. 3 show that under galvanostatic discharge at 0.25 mA/cm.sup.2 when the catholyte containing SP (Super-P) was used in the cell, the CP discharge potential increased by 300 mV, when compared to the electrolyte without SP (FIG. 3A). Furthermore, by coating the RVC current collector with SP, and thus increasing its specific surface area, the electrode potential increased up to 2.85 vs. Li.sup.+/Li at 0.25 mA/cm.sup.2.

[0096] The CP and lithium response over long-term discharge was also measured. FIG. 3B shows that the substitution of the conventional electrolyte with the semi-solid catholyte dramatically increases the discharge capacity of the Li/O.sub.2 cathode. When SP was added to the electrolyte, the discharge time increased from 4 hours to 11 days. The discharge was limited by lithium consumption as demonstrated by the fast lithium potential rising after 250 h. Replacing the lithium counter electrode with a fresh one enabled the discharge to be extended over 19 days and to reach a discharge capacity of 110 mAh/cm.sup.2 corresponding to 500 mAh/g of total SP dispersed in the catholyte (0.1 g) and to a practical energy density of 300 mWh/cm.sup.2.

[0097] After 19 days, the CP current collector was found to have formed a passivation layer which was mainly composed of Li.sub.2O.sub.2, although traces of LiOH were also present. This layer was detected by XRD analysis (FIG. 4A) and caused an increase in electrode impedance (FIG. 4B). The catholyte was not affected by the prolonged discharge. Indeed, substitution of the CP current collector with a fresh one allowed O.sub.2 reduction to be carried out in the same catholyte over an additional 10 days (700 h total discharge time) and to achieve a discharge capacity of 175 mAh/cm.sup.2. On the basis of the CP area (0.45 cm.sup.2) and SP content (ca. 0.1 g) in the catholyte (ca. 5 mL) the specific capacity is ca 800 mAh/g of total SP. Given that the average cathode potential is 2.7 V vs. Li.sup.+/Li, the energy density approaches 500 mWh/cm.sup.2.

[0098] Following the additional 11 days, the catholyte was characterized by TEM (FIG. 5A), XRD (FIG. 5B), and FTIR (FIG. 6). The TEM images indicated that a thin (<50 nm) passivating layer was formed on the SP surface, thus demonstrating that ORR was taking place at the flowing catholyte particles. XRD analyses did not reveal crystalline Li.sub.2O.sub.2 in the catholyte presumably because these particles were highly dispersed in the carbonaceous component of the catholyte. The FTIR spectrum of the catholyte collected after 700 h discharge was similar to that of the catholyte before discharge, with a small increase of the absorption band intensity at 3500 cm.sup.1 and 1600 cm.sup.1. Such signals can be related to alcoholic moieties originating from electrolyte decomposition and/or to moisture entering the cell after long operation (FIG. 6).

Example 2. Lithium Oxygen Battery

[0099] A macroporous RVC current collector was coated with SP (SEM image, FIG. 7) (0.385 cm.sup.2, 7 mg cm.sup.2 of SP). The RVCSP current collector was used to assemble the semi-solid, flow Li/O.sub.2 cell which is schematized in FIGS. 1 and 2. The cell core constituted a lithium metal anode and a RVCSP current collector separated by a fibreglass membrane. The catholyte was pumped through the cell by a peristaltic pump while being continuously enriched with O.sub.2 (g). For basic studies, an additional reference electrode which intercepted the catholyte flow was used (not reported in FIGS. 1 and 2).

[0100] Polarization tests were carried out on the prototype consisting in the repetition of 1 hour discharge steps at different current densities from 0.05 mA cm.sup.2 up to 4 mA cm.sup.2. The sequence was stopped when the cathode potential was lower than 2 V vs. Li.sup.+/Li or the anode potential was higher than 1 V vs. Li.sup.+/Li. The pump rate was 200 rpm which corresponded to a catholyte flow of approximately 170 mL/min. FIG. 8A shows the electrode potentials and cell voltage trends during the consecutive steps. Notably, the cathode showed a high potential (V.sub.cathode) of 2.90 V vs Li.sup.+/Li at 0.05 mA/cm.sup.2 which decreased by only 10% when the current was increased up to 3 mA/cm.sup.2. At 0.05 mA/cm.sup.2 the cell voltage (V.sub.cell) was 2.9 V. The total discharge capacity calculated by the integration of the current over time of the different steps was 50 mAh/cm.sup.2. FIG. 8A shows that the cell performance at the longest times and highest currents was affected by the lithium anode. Lithium overpotential reached 1V after 40 h discharge and currents >2.5 mA/cm.sup.2 due to lithium depletion.

[0101] To avoid lithium depletion, flow cell rechargeability after the previous discharge sequence was studied by consecutive, 1 hour recharge steps at low currents, from 0.9 mA/cm.sup.2 to 0.05 mA/cm.sup.2 (FIG. 8B). The recharge cell voltages decreased when the current density was lowered and ranged between 3.85 V and 3.05 V, which correspond to cathode potentials of 3.30 V vs Li.sup.+/Li and 2.90 V vs Li.sup.+/Li. This leads to an exceptionally low cell recharge overvoltage of 150 mV at 0.05 mA cm.sup.2, which increases up to 950 mV at 0.9 mA cm.sup.2. At the highest current, V.sub.cathode is 3.3 V vs Li.sup.+/Li, which corresponds to a low cathode recharge overpotential of 400 mV. The cell over voltage and electrode overpotentials are calculated as difference between the cell voltage or electrode potential during recharge and the cell voltage or electrode potential exhibited in open circuit conditions.

[0102] The rechargeability of the cell was further investigated by the repetition of 1 hour discharge and recharge steps at different current densities varying from 0.05 mA cm.sup.2 to 4 mA cm.sup.2. The discharge was limited by setting a cathode potential cut-off of 2 V vs Li.sup.+/Li and the charge was limited by a cathode potential cut-off of 3.7 V vs Li.sup.+/Li. The recharge cut-off was set to prevent electrolyte oxidative degradation. The results are reported in FIG. 9A. It was found that reducing the steps and the periodical recharging of the cell helped to circumvent lithium depletion phenomena.

[0103] Using this approach, it was feasible to achieve up to 4 mAcm.sup.2. FIG. 9B shows the discharge polarization curves of the prototype in terms of V.sub.cell and cell power density (P.sub.cell=iV.sub.cell) and of V.sub.cathode and cathode power density (P.sub.cathode=iV.sub.cathode). Power levels of 25 mW cm.sup.2 were observed corresponding to specific power of approximately 3 kW kg.sup.1 of SP deposited on the RVC current collector which featured a geometric area of 0.385 cm.sup.2 and an SP loading of 7 mg cm.sup.2. Given that 30 mL of catholyte was used, the power normalized to the total SP content (0.6 g) is 16 W kg.sup.1.

[0104] The cell discharge voltage was shaped by cathode and anode potential losses. The cathode potential does not significantly change up to 3 mA/cm.sup.2. For higher currents, diffusion limitation caused a 20% cathode potential drop and P.sub.cathode reached a maximum value. Furthermore, the lithium anode discharge over potential is notable even at low currents and it mainly contributes to the cell voltage drop even for currents lower than 3 mA/cm.sup.2.

[0105] The Nyquist plots shown in FIG. 10 demonstrate that the lithium anode is the electrode that mainly contributes to the total cell impedance and to the cell impedance increase after cycling. The Nyquist plot of the lithium anode is dominated by a semicircle, which is ascribed to SEI (solid electrolyte interface), with a real axis intercept at low frequency of 100 cm.sup.2, which increases up to 170 cm.sup.2 after cycling. These data have to be compared with the initial and final cell impedances of 120 cm.sup.2 and 180 cm.sup.2. The lithium SEI could be improved by optimizing cell assembly. Indeed, lithium was not coated by any protective layer and was separated from the cathode only by a fibreglass separator. The RVCSP impedance slightly worsens because diffusion-related processes become more sluggish, as in the case of CP electrodes tested in conventional stirred cells.
