Abstract
Various systems and methods are provided for increasing situational awareness of an operator carrying, integrating, and using a combination of equipment items in a variety of operating environments in a compact configuration enabling rapid viewing and access or stowage with minimized eye and hand movement. In particular, embodiments include apparatuses and methods associated with a ruggedized hands-free body mounted portable display device holder. In particular, various embodiments are provided which enable an operator to use a combination equipment together in a body mounted system which increase situational awareness and ability to operate using a variety of body mounted equipment as well as carried equipment that reduce mass or streamline the operator's equipment loadout that is carried on their body e.g., body armor with equipment mounting loops or sewn strips.
Claims
1. A wearable system for hands free positioning, mounting, and using a portable electronic device in a field of view in coordination with to a plurality of carried equipment items with minimized hand movements comprising: a first and second planar section each formed as a plate or sheet and having a perimeter shape which is co-extensive with a portable electronic device, the first planar section further comprises a plurality of clasp sections that are formed to extend away from the first planar section at spaced apart sections of the first planar section and wrap around edges of the portable electronic device; one or more mounting structures comprising strips or elongated sections that are coupled with the second planar section, the one or more mounting structures are formed with releasable latching or coupling sections to couple opposing ends of the one or more mounting structures together, the one or more mounting structures are formed with dimensions enabling the one or more mounting structures to insert into one or more loop structures formed on a first portion of a garment having a first and second side that is formed to be worn by an operator, the first portion is between arm hole apertures in the vest shaped garment; a threaded cylindrical hinge section; a first, second, and third hinge section, the first and third hinge section are coupled with or formed as a part of a first side of the first planar section and the second hinge section coupled with or formed as a part of a first side of the second planar section, wherein the second hinge section is disposed between the first and third hinge sections, the hinge sections are all formed in part to enclose the threaded rod such that there is at least a slight interference fit between the hinge sections and the threaded rod; a rotational stop structure formed with a first and second stop structure section, the first and second stop section structure sections are planar and are coupled with the first planar section on opposing sides of the second hinge section such that a portion of the first stop section structure extends a first predetermined distance away from the first side of the first planar structure, the second stop structure is formed with a bend joint or transition section between the first stop section and the second stop section and extends perpendicularly a second predetermined distance away from the first stop section structure; and a latch section connected to the first planar section, the latch section comprising a planar section and an elastic section, the elastic section is coupled with said hook or latching protrusion.
2. The system as in claim 1, wherein the first and second planar sections, the first, second, and third hinge sections, and the first and second stop structures are formed from thermoplastic material.
3. The system as in claim 1, wherein the elastic section comprises an elastic cord.
4. The system as in claim 1, further comprising the portable electronic device.
5. The system as in claim 1, further comprising the garment.
6. The system as in claim 5, further comprising armored plates inserted into a plate retaining structure in the garment.
7. An equipment mounting system comprising: a supporting structure formed or adapted with a selectively coupled enclosure section formed with a plurality of apertures including arm apertures, a neck aperture, and a torso aperture, the supporting structure adapted to be disposed on a human torso that includes a plurality of equipment mounting structures which includes an upper body enclosing section comprising an upper and lower torso section; a first plurality of equipment coupled with the lower torso section and a second plurality of equipment coupled with the upper torso section, wherein upper torso section is defined by a section over a chest area of the human torso, wherein the second plurality of equipment comprises a portable display system and a portable display device holder adapted to receive and rotatably hold the portable display system so as to enable the operator to view the portable display device from a position on the operator's upper torso above the second plurality of equipment items; wherein the portable display device holder comprises: a first or front plate formed with a thermoplastic material, the first or front plate comprising a plurality of spaced apart protrusions that extend away from the first plate and are formed to clasp sides of the portable display device, the first plate further comprises a first and second opposing edges as well as a third and fourth opposing edges, the edges surrounding a first and opposing second planar face, the first plate further comprises a notch or aperture formed into a center section of the first edge of the first plate, the front plate is further formed with a latch protrusion extending away from the first planar face at a center portion of the notch in closest proximity to the second edge, the front plate further comprises a first hinge structure formed extending away from a center section of said second edge which opposes said first edge; a second or back plate formed with said thermoplastic material formed with opposing second plate planar sides surrounded by a first, second, third and fourth second plate edges, the first or front plate comprises a second and third spaced apart hinge structures that are formed to extend away from the second plate's second edge so as to enable the first hinge to insert between the second and third hinge structures; a first and second mechanical stop sections comprising a rectangular length of thermoplastic material having a first and section portion, the first portion forming an angled section extending away from the second portion, wherein the first and second mechanical stop sections are coupled with the first planar side of the first or front plate extending away from the first plate's second edge; a rod formed with a plurality of threads on the rod's outer curved surface, wherein the rod is inserted into the first, second, and third hinge structures, wherein the thermoplastic hinges are formed with a slight interference fit with the rod; a latch structure comprising an elastic fabric or material coupled to a center portion of the second plate's first edge, the second latch structure further comprises a grip structure formed with a size larger that the notch, the elastic or material further comprises a first and second cord or rope type structure which is coupled with the grip structure, wherein the first and second cord structures are attached to the grip structure so as to enable the latch protrusion to insert there between; and a first and second clip structure each comprising a flexible longitudinal structure that is spaced apart coupled with the second side of the second plate, wherein the longitudinal structure of the first and second clips are passed through said plurality of equipment mounting structures of said supporting structure within said upper torso section and fastened to another portion of the longitudinal structure with a snap fit coupling structure; wherein the hinges and mechanical stops are formed with dimensions and geometry such that they collectively enable the first plate to rotate away from the second plate along the rod's axis until the mechanical stops impinge upon the second side of the second plate and arrest or stop rotational movement of the first plate; wherein the first plate is further formed with an aperture that aligns with a camera disposed in the first display device oriented towards the first plate, the first plate further comprises a moveable cover attached to the first side of the first plate and is configured to be moveable over the aperture to selectively block the aperture to cover the camera.
8. A portable electronic device holder comprising: a back plate comprising a first side and a second side, the first side being opposite of the second side; a front plate comprising a plurality of protrusions extending from opposing sides or corners of the front plate, wherein the protrusions are formed with a length that when formed extends around a side and adjacent edge of an electronic device comprising a display so as to secure the electronic device to a first side of the front plate; a hinge assembly comprising a cylindrical rod and a plurality of hinge frames, wherein the cylindrical rod is disposed parallel to one edge of the back plate; and wherein the plurality of hinge frames comprises at least one central hinge and at least one lateral hinge, wherein a first portion of the at least one central hinge covers a first section of the cylindrical rod and a second portion of the at least one central hinge is disposed on the front plate, a first portion of the at least one lateral hinge covers a second section of the cylindrical rod and a second portion of the at least one lateral hinge is disposed on the back plate, the front plate is formed to rotate relative to the back plate about an axis of rotation created by the centerline of the cylindrical rod; a first and second rotation stop structure coupled with the first plate comprising a first and second rotation stop section, wherein the first rotation stop section is coupled with the front plate on opposing sides of the first hinge section, wherein the second rotation stop section is formed so it extends perpendicular the first rotation stop section, the first and second rotation stop sections are formed with a transition section between the first and second rotation stop sections, wherein the first and second rotation stop structures are formed with a length and disposed onto the front plate so that when said first plate is rotated the second section comes into contact with the back plate so as to halt rotation of the front plate; at least one structural connector coupled to the first side of the back plate and configured to connect the back plate of the holder to a garment worn by an operator; and a latch system coupled to the back plate of the portable display device holder, wherein the latch system is adapted to be selectively positioned in an engaged position and an open position, wherein when the latch is in the engaged position.
9. A method of manufacturing portable display device holder comprising: providing tools to produce one embodiment of an electronic device holder including a heating structure that outputs heat of at least 350 Degrees F., at least one form, a molding cast, vice clamps, a scroll saw, a razor knife, a rotating cutting tool with cutoff disc, a marking tool, a measurement structure, a drill and at least one drill bit, a heat gun, an arbor press, and a sewing kit; measuring, using the measurement structure, and determining a first shape within a two dimensional plane of a display device that is parallel to a side of the portable display device; placing a first visible cutting path or markings, using the marking tool, onto a first heat malleable material sheet section that corresponds to portions of the first shape to define an outline of a holder front plate that includes a first hinge side which extends beyond a portion of the first shape; placing a second visible cutting path or markings onto a second heat malleable material sheet section that corresponds to portions of the first shape to define an outline of a holder back plate that includes a second hinge side which extends beyond a portion of the first shape; cutting, using the scroll saw, the first and second heat malleable material sheet to produce the front and back plates respectively defined by the first and second visible cutting path; cutting or forming, using the razor knife, a first hinge section in the first hinge side and a second and third hinge section in the second hinge side, wherein the second and third hinge sections are formed in the second hinge side so that the third hinge section extends between the second and third hinge sections when remaining outer edges of the first and second hinge sides as well as adjacent sides of the front plate and second plate are aligned; cutting, using the circular cutting tool, the all thread rod a first length no longer than the first or second hinge sides of the first and second plates; measuring and cutting out, using the measurement structure and razor knife, a first and second rotation stop structures from heat malleable material sheet in a rectangular shape; heating and softening, using the heat gun, the first hinge section of the front plate; clamping the front plate to the at least one form or the molding cast to the using vice clamps; pressing and wrapping the heated first hinge section around the all thread rod to a slight interference fit such that the all thread rod does not move laterally within the first hinge section and to create a rotational friction or slight interference fit between the rod and the first hinge section; heating and softening, using the heat gun, the second and third hinge sections of the back plate; clamping the back plate to the at least one form or the molding cast to the using vice clamps; pressing the second and third hinge sections around the all thread rod to a slight interference fit such that the all thread rod does not move laterally within the second and third hinge sections and creates a rotational friction or slight interference fit between the all thread rod and the second and third hinge sections, wherein the first hinge section is positioned or disposed onto the all threat rod between the second and third hinge sections when the remaining outer edges of the first and second hinge sides as well as adjacent sides of the front plate and second plate are aligned; drilling a first set of holes, using the drill, in the front plate and first hinge section; drilling a second and third set of holes, using the drill, respectively through the back plate and the second and third hinge sections; providing a first and second mounting clips each formed in a rectilinear shape with a first width and having at least one mounting clip hole through each clip; attaching a rivet, using the arbor press, respectively through the first set of drilled holes to couple the first hinge section to the front plate; attaching a rivet respectively through the second and third sets of drilled holes as well as a respective mounting clip hole so as to couple one of said mounting claims to the back plate; forming a latch assembly by sewing a latching tab formed from webbing or a textile section to a center section of an elastic cord; attaching terminal ends of the latch assembly's elastic cord to spaced apart and centered sections of a side of the back plate opposing the second and third hinge sections; cutting a section of the and use heat gun to soften and bend over to create latch point in a centered section of a side of the front plate opposing the first hinge section; heating at least a portion of the mechanical stops and using a right angle form to create right angle sections of the mechanical stops; riveting, using the arbor press, the mechanical stops to a portion of the front plate on opposing sides of the first hinge section; drilling a hole through one of the plates corresponding to a field of view of a camera optic formed into an electronic device with a shape corresponding to the holder heating at least portions of the plurality of protrusions to soften the plurality of protrusions; and positioning the electronic device onto front plate and bending the plurality of protrusions to respectively form them around sides and adjacent edges of the electronic device to secure the electronic device to the front plate.
10. A method of using a combination of equipment items including a wearable system for hands free positioning, mounting, and using a portable electronic device in a field of view in coordination with to a plurality of carried equipment items with minimized hand movements comprising: providing the wearable system; providing at least one of the carried equipment items comprising a system with an aiming structure; carrying and orienting or operating the system with the aiming structure in proximity to the wearable system with an operator's first hand and second hand; and manipulating the wearable system with either the first or second hand; wherein the wearable system comprises: a first and second planar section each formed as a plate or sheet and having a perimeter shape which is co-extensive with a portable electronic device, the first planar section further comprises a plurality of clasp sections that are formed to extend away from the first planar section at spaced apart sections of the first planar section and wrap around edges of the portable electronic device; one or more mounting structures comprising strips or elongated sections that are coupled with the second planar section, the one or more mounting structures are formed with releasable latching or coupling sections to couple opposing ends of the one or more mounting structures together, the one or more mounting structures are formed with dimensions enabling the one or more mounting structures to insert into one or more loop structures formed on a first portion of a garment having a first and second side that is formed to be worn by an operator, the first portion is between arm hole apertures in the vest shaped garment; a threaded cylindrical hinge section; a first, second, and third hinge section, the first and third hinge section are coupled with or formed as a part of a first side of the first planar section and the second hinge section coupled with or formed as a part of a first side of the second planar section, wherein the second hinge section is disposed between the first and third hinge sections, the hinge sections are all formed in part to enclose the threaded rod such that there is at least a slight interference fit between the hinge sections and the threaded rod; a rotational stop structure formed with a first and second stop structure section, the first and second stop section structure sections are planar and are coupled with the first planar section on opposing sides of the second hinge section such that a portion of the first stop section structure extends a first predetermined distance away from the first side of the first planar structure, the second stop structure is formed with a bend joint or transition section between the first stop section and the second stop section and extends perpendicularly a second predetermined distance away from the first stop section structure; and a latch section connected to the first planar section, the latch section comprising a planar section and an elastic section, the elastic section is coupled with said hook or latching protrusion.
11. The method as in claim 10, wherein the first and second planar sections, the first, second, and third hinge sections, and the first and second stop structures are formed from thermoplastic material.
12. The method as in claim 10, wherein the elastic section comprises an elastic cord.
13. The method as in claim 10, further comprising the portable electronic device.
14. The method as in claim 10, further comprising the garment.
15. The method as in claim 14, further comprising armored plates inserted into a plate retaining structure in the garment.
16. The method as in claim 10, wherein the system with the aiming structure comprises a projectile firing system.
