Abstract
A foldable clipboard includes at least three support panels that each have an upper surface. At least one of the support panels includes a set of apertures operable to receive an attachment feature. At least one hinge pivotably couples each adjacent set of support panels. The clipboard is capable of transitioning between a folded configuration and an unfolded configuration via the at least one hinge pivotably coupling each adjacent set of support panels. The upper surfaces of each of the at least three support panels form a combined upper surface having a substantially constant and consistent thickness that provide a writing surface when the clipboard is in the unfolded configuration.
Claims
1. A foldable clipboard, comprising: a first support panel; a second support panel; at least a third support panel; a first hinge, wherein the first hinge includes a first hinge component pivotably coupled to a second hinge component, wherein the first hinge component is coupled to the first support panel and the second hinge component is coupled to the second support panel; and at least a second hinge, wherein the at least a second hinge includes a third hinge component pivotably coupled to a fourth hinge component, wherein the third hinge component is coupled to the second support panel and the fourth hinge component is coupled to the at least a third support panel, wherein the first support panel, the second support panel, and the at least a third support panel are able to transition between a folded configuration of the foldable clipboard and an unfolded configuration of the foldable clipboard, wherein the first support panel, the second support panel, and the at least a third support panel share a longitudinal axis when the foldable clipboard is in the unfolded configuration, wherein the first hinge component is aligned with the third hinge component and offset from the longitudinal axis by a first distance, wherein the second hinge component is aligned with the fourth hinge component and offset from the longitudinal axis by a second distance, wherein the first distance is less than the second distance, wherein the first support panel, the second support panel, and the at least a third support panel have respective surfaces that form a combined upper surface when the foldable clipboard is in the unfolded configuration, and wherein the first support panel and the at least a third support panel have adjacent surfaces when the foldable clipboard is in the folded configuration.
2. The foldable clipboard of claim 1, wherein the first support panel has a first length, wherein the at least a third support panel has a second length, and wherein the first length is shorter than the second length.
3. The foldable clipboard of claim 2, wherein the at least a third support panel includes a third support panel and a fourth support panel, wherein the first support panel, the second support panel, the third support panel, and the fourth support panel are able to transition between the folded configuration of the foldable clipboard and the unfolded configuration of the foldable clipboard, wherein the first support panel, the second support panel, the third support panel, and the fourth support panel share the longitudinal axis when the foldable clipboard is in the unfolded configuration, wherein the at least a second hinge includes a second hinge and a third hinge, wherein the third hinge component and the fourth hinge component are components of the second hinge, and wherein the fourth hinge component is coupled to the third support panel.

The foldable clipboard of claim 3, wherein the third hinge includes a fifth hinge component pivotably coupled to a sixth hinge component, wherein the fifth hinge component is coupled to the third support panel and the sixth hinge component is coupled to the fourth support panel, wherein the third hinge component is aligned with the fifth hinge component and offset from the longitudinal axis by the first distance, and wherein the fourth hinge component is aligned with the sixth hinge component and offset from the longitudinal axis by the second distance.
5. The foldable clipboard of claim 3, wherein the first support panel and the second support panel has the first length, and wherein the third support panel and the fourth support panel has the second length.

The foldable clipboard of claim 3, wherein the first support panel, the second support panel, the third support panel, and the fourth support panel have respective surfaces that form the combined upper surface when the foldable clipboard is in the unfolded configuration, wherein the first support panel and the third support panel have adjacent surfaces when the foldable clipboard is in the folded configuration, and wherein the second support panel and the fourth support panel have adjacent surfaces when the foldable clipboard is in the folded configuration.
7. The foldable clipboard of claim 3, wherein the second hinge is positioned between the first hinge and the third hinge along a first total length of the foldable clipboard defined when the foldable clipboard is in the unfolded configuration, wherein the first hinge is positioned between the second hinge and the third hinge along a second total length of the foldable clipboard defined when the foldable clipboard is in the folded configuration, and wherein the second total length defined when the foldable clipboard is in the folded configuration is shorter than the first total length defined when the foldable clipboard is in the unfolded configuration.
8. The foldable clipboard of claim 7, wherein the first hinge, the second hinge, and the third hinge are non-overlapping along the second total length defined when the foldable clipboard is in the folded configuration.
9. The foldable clipboard of claim 7, wherein the first hinge is closer to the third hinge than to the second hinge along the second total length defined when the foldable clipboard is in the folded configuration.
10. The foldable clipboard of claim 1, further comprising a clip coupled to the first support panel via at least one set of apertures within the first support panel, wherein the clip is able to secure items against at least a portion of the combined upper surface.
11. A foldable clipboard, comprising: a first support panel; a second support panel; at least a third support panel; a first hinge including a first hinge plate of the first support panel pivotably coupled to a second hinge plate of the second support panel; and at least a second hinge including a third hinge plate of the second support panel pivotably coupled to a fourth hinge plate of the at least a third support panel, wherein the first support panel, the second support panel, and the at least a third support panel have respective longitudinal axes that are aligned when the foldable clipboard is in an unfolded configuration, wherein the first hinge plate of the first support panel and the fourth hinge plate of the at least a third support panel are each offset a same first distance from the respective longitudinal axes, wherein the second hinge plate of the second support panel and the third hinge plate of the second support panel are each offset a same second distance from the respective longitudinal axes, and wherein the same first distance is shorter than the same second distance.
12. The foldable clipboard of claim 11, wherein the first support panel has a first length, wherein the at least a third support panel has a second length, and wherein the first length is shorter than the second length.
13. The foldable clipboard of claim 12, wherein the at least a third support panel includes a third support panel and a fourth support panel, wherein the first support panel, the second support panel, the third support panel, and the fourth support panel have respective longitudinal axes that are aligned when the foldable clipboard is in the unfolded configuration, wherein the at least a second hinge includes a second hinge and a third hinge, wherein the third hinge plate and the fourth hinge plate are plates of the second hinge, and wherein the third hinge includes a fifth hinge plate pivotably coupled to a sixth hinge plate of the fourth support panel.
14. The foldable clipboard of claim 13, wherein the first support panel and the second support panel has the first length, and wherein the third support panel and the fourth support panel has the second length.
15. The foldable clipboard of claim 11, further comprising a clip coupled to the first support panel via at least one set of apertures within the first support panel, wherein the clip is able to secure items against at least a portion of a combined upper surface of the first support panel, the second support panel, and the at least a third support panel.
16. The foldable clipboard of claim 11, wherein one or more of the first support panel, the second support panel, and the at least a third support panel are fabricated from a metal or a plastic.
17. A foldable writing surface, comprising: at least three support panels, each support panel of the at least three support panels including an upper surface, wherein the upper surfaces of each of the at least three support panels form a combined upper surface when the foldable writing surface is in an unfolded position; and at least two sets of hinges, wherein each adjacent set of support panels of the at least three support panels are coupled together by a respective set of hinges of the at least two sets of hinges, wherein each set of hinges of the at least two sets of hinges includes a first hinge and a second hinge, and wherein the at least two sets of hinges allow the at least three support panels to transition between a folded configuration and an unfolded configuration for the foldable writing surface, wherein the at least three support panels have a combined longitudinal axis with the foldable writing surface is in the unfolded configuration, wherein the first hinge of each set of hinges of the at least two sets of hinges has a first hinge plate set inside a second hinge plate relative to the combined longitudinal axis, wherein the second hinge of each set of hinges of the at least two sets of hinges has a third hinge plate set outside a fourth hinge plate relative to the combined longitudinal axis, wherein the first hinge plate and the third hinge plate of each set of hinges of the at least two sets of hinges are on a first support panel of an adjacent set of support panels of the at least three support panels, and wherein the second hinge plate and the fourth hinge plate of each set of hinges of the at least two sets of hinges are on a second support panel of the adjacent set of support panels of the at least three support panels.
18. The foldable writing surface of claim 17, wherein the at least three support panels includes four support panels, and wherein the at least two sets of hinges includes three sets of hinges.
19. The foldable writing surface of claim 17, wherein at least one support panel of the at least three support panels has a first length, wherein at least one support panel of the at least three support panels has a second length, and wherein the first length is shorter than the second length.
20. The foldable writing surface of claim 17, wherein the at least three support panels are substantially rigid, wherein the at least three support panels form a combined upper surface when in the unfolded configuration, and wherein the at least three support panels are able to support an application of force applied by a user when writing on the combined upper surface.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0076] U.S. Pat. No. 7,673,908 (the '908 patent) depicts an example foldable clipboard, and is incorporated herein in its entirety. The present disclosure provides numerous improvements over the clipboard of the '908 patent. For example, the clipboard 100 as embodied in the present disclosure is capable of a more compact and storable configuration, as the increased number of panels reduces the overall footprint of the clipboard 100 when in the folded configuration. In addition, the clipboard 100 of the present disclosure differs from the '908 patent with respect to the arrangement and operation of the actuation components (e.g., such as hinges) between various support panels of the clipboard 100. Further, the clipboard 100 of the present disclosure differs from the clipboard of the '908 patent in regards to the orientation of an attachment feature relative to the movement of the actuation components and subsequent folding/unfolding of the support panels by the actuation components namely, the clipboard 100 of the present disclosure folds and unfolds in the same direction as the document being held by the attachment feature via multiple sets of offsetting hinges.
