    Abstract

    An adhesive elastomeric tape comprising 90 grade cheesecloth that is knitted with a medium gauge elastic yarn through a stitch bonding machine. The cloth is then coated with a petroleum base adhesive using a unique strike through method that allows a adhesive to pass through while coating both sides. A style of athletic tape that is flexible, durable, and adhesive simultaneously.

    Claims

    1. A method of making knitted elastomeric adhesive tape comprising the steps of: wherein the base fabric material is composed of natural, unbleached, Grade #90 cheesecloth; which is a 100% cotton fabric loosely woven with a 4436 thread count per inch; wherein an elastic 105 denier thread is composed of raw, semi dull and opaque, non-twisted, 100% Spandex. This is a high strength, high uniformity, bare spandex yarn with a 20% expansion rate; wherein the adhesive is Hero Coatings #310; a High Solids Tape Compound which is composed of natural and Styrene-Isoprene-Styrene Rubber (SIS) polymers with 71% solids +/3% and solvent by Heptane/Toluene; operating a stitch bonding machine to knit said thread in 12 threads transverse per inch and 8 stitches longitudinal per inch into the Grade 90 Cheesecloth; operating a knife-over-roll coating machine to attain complete surface coverage of said adhesive on said fabric with a dried thickness of 5 mills on surface one, and a strike-thru of the adhesive to create a dried thickness of 1 mil on surface two; operating fabric is stretched to maximum tension to create a full stretch during coating process and subsequently decreased to a relaxed state prior to entering the curing/heat tunnel;

    2. The method of claim 1 wherein the fabric has zero transverse stretch and 75% longitudinal stretch.

    DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

    [0005] Referring now to the invention in more detail, FIGS. 1 and 2 show athletic tape that was manufactured by feeding 90 grade cheesecloth into a stitch bonding machine that knits in the elastic yarn. The stitching is designed to allow stretch along the length, but none along the width. Weaving this specific number of threads of elastic into the highest grade cheesecloth provides comfort, flexibility and durability.

    [0006] Adhesive is then applied using a knife-over-roll coating technique to attain a strike through effect. This unique coating provides adhesive on both sides of the tape. The coating is applied with the fabric stretched fully extended and then immediately relaxed prior to entering the heated drying ovens to allow the tape to maintain its high stretch capabilities.

    [0007] The finished product is extremely flexible, easily hand tearable, very adhesive and durable. These combined qualities make this tape unique in the industry.
