Abstract
In one embodiment, there is disclosed a modular, blast resistant suspension module for an armored vehicle. Each suspension module has a first and second axle assembly. The first axle assembly has a Short-Long Arm (SLA) suspension system pivotally connected to a blast resistant differential housing and the second axle assembly has a Road Arm (RA) suspension system pivotally connected to the differential housing. The suspension modules may be used to form 44 or 88 vehicle configurations.
Claims
1. A suspension system, comprising: a suspension module having a first axle assembly and a second axle assembly; each axle assembly pivotally connected at a first end to a turnable wheel end assembly; each suspension module pivotally connected at a second end to a blast mitigating differential housing; said first axle assembly equipped with Short-Long Arm (SLA) suspension for each wheel end assembly; each said SLA including an upper arm member and an opposed lower arm member, each said upper arm having a length separating a first end and an opposed second end; each lower arm having a length terminating in a first end and an opposed second end; each said upper arm of shorter length than each said lower arm; said first end of each said upper arm member terminating in an upper arm outer pivot; each said upper arm outer pivot pivotally connectable to a first pivot on said wheel end assembly; said first end on each said lower arm pivot terminating in a outer pivot; each said lower arm outer pivot pivotally connectable to a second pivot on said wheel end assembly; each said second end on each said upper arm terminating in multiple inner pivots; each said upper arm multiple inner pivots pivotally connectable to pivots on said differential housing; said first axle assembly further equipped with an SLA spring and damper assembly pivotally connected at one end to one of said upper and lower arm member; and said second axle assembly equipped with Road Arm (RA) suspension for each wheel end assembly; each said RA having a length separating a first end and a second end; each said first end having an RA outer pivot driveably connectable to a wheel end assembly; each said second end having a RA inner pivot; each said RA inner pivot connectable to a pivot on said differential housing; each said RA further equipped with a an RA spring and damper assembly; each said RA spring and damper assembly pivotally attached at one end to an associated RA; each said RA length having an aperture therethrough extending along said length between said first and second ends.

The suspension system of claim 1, wherein said first axle assembly is equipped with a steering assembly; said steering assembly including tie rods; each tie rod pivotally connected at a first end to a wheel end assembly and pivotally connected at a second end to a center link; said center link interactively connected to a Pitman arm; said Pitman arm interactively connected to a Pitman and idler support; said Pitman and idler support equipped with opposed idler arms and an hydraulic steering gear box; said hydraulic steering gearbox actuated by an electric motor.

The suspension system of claim 1, wherein each said RA has a top and bottom separated by sidewalls extending substantially unbroken therebetween to define an outer shell and an inner space; each said outer pivot is an output shaft and each said inner pivot is an input shaft; each said input shaft extending through an aperture in said outer shell into said inner space; each said input shaft driveably connectable to an input gear in said inner space; each said outer pivot is an output shaft extending through an aperture in said outer shell into said inner space; each said output shaft driveably connectable to an output gear in said inner space; each said RA further equipped with a drive chain extending between said input gear and said output gear.
4. The suspension system of claim 1, wherein said RA output shaft is driveably connected to said output gear by a constant velocity joint assembly.
5. The suspension system of claim 1, wherein each said first suspension assembly further includes an axle driveably connected at one end to a differential in said differential housing, and at an opposite end driveably to said wheel end assembly.
6. The suspension system of claim 5, wherein each said axle of said first suspension assembly is driveably connected to said differential by a constant velocity joint assembly.

The suspension system of claim 1, further including a controller with memory and instructions; said controller electronically connected to an actuator, said actuator connected to said spring and damper assembly; wherein instructions from the controller to the actuator causes the actuator to affect the spring and damper assembly to move at least one RA from an engaged position and a disengaged position.
8. The suspension system of claim 1, wherein the upper arm of a first SLA for a first wheel assembly is a different length than the upper arm of a second SLA for a second wheel assembly.
9. The suspension system of claim 1, wherein the lower arm of a first SLA for a first wheel assembly is of different length that the lower arm of a second SLA for a second wheel assembly.
10. A vehicle, comprising; a drive train mounted within said vehicle, said drive train including an engine, a drive shaft driveably connected to at least one transmission differential; said transmission differential contained within a differential housing; said differential housing having a blast mitigating profile; a suspension system, said suspension system including at least one suspension module having a first axle assembly and a second axle assembly; each axle assembly pivotally connected at a first end to a turnable wheel end assembly; each suspension module pivotally connected at a second end to a blast mitigating differential housing; said first axle assembly equipped with Short-Long Arm (SLA) suspension for each wheel end assembly; each said SLA including an upper arm member and an opposed lower arm member, each said upper arm having a length separating a first end and an opposed second end; each lower arm having a length terminating in a first end and an opposed second end; each said upper arm of shorter length than each said lower arm; said first end of each said upper arm member terminating in an upper arm outer pivot; each said upper arm outer pivot pivotally connectable to a first pivot on said wheel end assembly; said first end on each said lower arm pivot terminating in a outer pivot; each said lower arm outer pivot pivotally connectable to a second pivot on said wheel end assembly; each said second end on each said upper arm terminating in multiple inner pivots; each said upper arm multiple inner pivots pivotally connectable to pivots on said differential housing; said first axle assembly further equipped with an SLA spring and damper assembly pivotally connected at one end to one of said upper and lower arm member at one end and to a vehicle structural member at an opposite end; each said first axle assembly further includes an axle driveably connected at one end to a differential in said differential housing, and at an opposite end driveably to said wheel end assembly; said second axle assembly equipped with Road Arm (RA) suspension for each wheel end assembly; each said RA having a length separating a first end and a second end; each said first end having an RA outer pivot driveably connectable to a wheel end assembly; each said second end having a RA inner pivot; each said RA inner pivot connectable to a pivot on said differential housing; each said RA further equipped with a RA spring and damper assembly; each said RA spring and damper assembly pivotally attached at one end to an associated RA at an opposite end to a vehicle structural member; each said RA length having an aperture therethrough extending along said length between said first and second ends; each said RA outer pivot is an output shaft driveably attached to said differential and each said RA inner pivot is an input shaft driveably connected to said wheel end assembly.

The vehicle of claim 10, wherein said first axle assembly is equipped with a steering assembly; said steering assembly including tie rods; each tie rod pivotally connected at a first end to a wheel end assembly and pivotally connected at a second end to a center link; said center link interactively connected to a Pitman arm; said Pitman arm interactively connected to a Pitman and idler support; said Pitman and idler support equipped with opposed idler arms and an hydraulic steering gear box; said hydraulic steering gearbox actuated by an electric motor.

The vehicle of claim 10, wherein each said RA has a top and bottom separated by sidewalls extending substantially unbroken therebetween to define an outer shell and an inner space; each said outer pivot is an output shaft and each said inner pivot is an input shaft; each said input shaft extending through an aperture in said outer shell into said inner space; each said input shaft driveably connectable to an input gear in said inner space; each said output shaft extending through an aperture in said outer shell into said inner space; each said output shaft driveably connectable to an output gear in said inner space; each said RA further equipped with a drive chain extending between said input gear and said output gear.
13. The vehicle of claim 10, wherein said RA output shaft is driveably connected to said output gear by a constant velocity joint assembly.
14. The vehicle of claim 10, wherein each said axle of said first suspension assembly is driveably connected to said differential by a constant velocity joint assembly.
15. The vehicle of claim 10, wherein said vehicle is equipped with a first and second suspension module; said first suspension module in spaced apart relationship to said second suspension module along a length of said vehicle underside; said first suspension module and said second suspension module oriented such that the first axle assembly of the first suspension module and the first axle assembly of the second suspension module are outermost axle assemblies, and said first suspension module second axle assembly and said second suspension module second axle assembly are innermost axle assemblies.

The vehicle of claim 10, further including a controller with memory and instructions; said controller electronically connected to an actuator; said actuator connected to said spring and damper assembly, wherein instructions from the controller to the actuator causes the actuator to affect the spring and damper assembly to move at least one RA from an engaged position and a disengaged position.
17. The vehicle of claim 10, wherein said first axle assembly is driveably connected to a first transmission differential and said second axle assembly is driveably connected to a second transmission differential.
18. The vehicle of claim 10, wherein the upper arm of a first SLA for a first wheel assembly is a different length than the upper arm of a second SLA for a second wheel assembly.
19. The suspension system of claim 10, wherein the lower arm of a first SLA for a first wheel assembly is of different length that the lower arm of a second SLA for a second wheel assembly.

[0027] The RAs are engagable or disengageable by an operator depending upon conditions in which the vehicle is operated. Specifically, controller 247 includes a memory such as ROM, PROM, EPROM, EEPROM, FLASH or any other memory with instructions stored in memory. The controller is electronically connected to an actuator 245, which may be hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic or any other actuator, through a controller area network (CAN) 243 or any other electronic connection. The actuator is operably connected as at 241 to the damper assembly. When an operator desires or when conditions require, a command signal is transmitted from the controller to the actuator, which, depending upon what actuator is used, either moves a fluid to or from the damper or electronically activates the dampers to raise the RA and its tire assembly away from ground engagement. This movement of the RA may also be used to enhance turning and mobility of the vehicle.

The apertures through which the input shaft and output shaft extend may be provided with a seal 263 to retain lubrication and prevent dirt and debris from entering the inner space.
