Abstract
A ballistic shield may include multiple ballistic plates. The first plate may be smaller contain a handle and viewport and be able to connect to a second plate. The second plate shall be able to connect to the first plate and when combined, can create a larger shield using only the handle and viewport of the first plate. Other plates may be connected to the second plate to increase the ballistic coverage required. A rotating plate can be connected with a hinge and spacer. When dropped the rotating plate would enable extended coverage. When the rotating plate is rotated upward, an additional layer of ballistic coverage is provided.
Claims
1. A ballistic shield comprising of: a first ballistic plate incorporating ballistic material with a handle a means to connect the first ballistic plate to other ballistic plates a second ballistic plate incorporating ballistic material with a means to connect to the first ballistic plate the secondary ballistic plate having a symmetrical geometry and weight distribution such that the resultant of rotational forces exerted on the handle of the first ballistic by the second ballistic plate is zero.
2. When the first ballistic plate of claim 1 is connected to the second ballistic plate of claim 1, no gap exists between the plates for projectiles to pass through.
3. A third ballistic plate incorporating ballistic material may be attached to the secondary ballistic plate of claim 1 to expand ballistic coverage.
4. A rotating ballistic plate incorporating ballistic material may be attached to any existing ballistic plate when offset by a spacer and a hinge one side of the spacer is connected to an existing ballistic plate one leaf of the hinge is connected to the side of the spacer which is not connected to an existing ballistic plate the spacer must be wide enough such that the rotating plate does not collide with the ballistic plate attached to the spacer during rotation the other leaf of the hinge is connected to the rotating ballistic plate when the leafs of the hinge are 180 degrees apart, the rotating ballistic plate must partially overlap the leaf of the hinge attached to the spacer for the shield to be rigid with respect to horizontal forces on the impact side of the rotating plate without the need for additional stiffening structures.
5. a rotational ballistic plate of claim 4 attached to an existing ballistic shield of claim 4 and held vertical and perpendicular to the ground, with overlap of ballistic plates such no gap exists for a horizontal projectile to pass between the ballistic plates.
6. A rotating ballistic plate of claim 4 wherein when rotated to cover the ballistic plates of claims 1 and 3 provide an additional layer of ballistic protection.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0021] The invention described with reference to accompanying drawings, has at least one illustrative representation shown. This invention may be illustrated in different morphologies and should not be construed as limited to the representations contained in this document. The illustrations herewith are not limiting as to the scope of the invention.
[0022] Terms may be used interchangeably, unless made expressively clear from the text. The terms ballistic panel, plate or ballistic plate shall be used interchangeably unless specifically made distinguishable from the text. The term ballistic shield shall mean a ballistic plate with at least one additional item attached to it. Similarly, the terms hinge and components to enable rotation shall be interchangeable. Some terms such as connector or fastener shall be deemed understandable by someone with proficient skills in this art. Some drawings views may have some items missing from an actual ballistic shield. Not having all items in every drawing view is done for clarity and understanding of the entities on that drawing.

[0030] The variable configuration allows the users to increase the resistance of the ballistic protection of just one ballistic plate for higher velocity projectiles. When the rotating ballistic plate 25 is folded upward the maximum ballistic coverage is decreased. The concept of overlapping ballistic plates for increased ballistic protection and the expense of decreased ballistic coverage is called ballistic layering.
