Abstract
A system and method for identifying whether certain web-based media or web-based videos are likely to become popular is provided. Videos that are identified as having a strong likelihood of becoming popular with a particular demographic group are paired to advertisements or other media appropriate for the particular demographic group. Videos that are likely to be popular are identified by measuring early input rates such as request rates, replay rates, comment rates, forwarding rates and reply rates. Input rate patterns including pattern segments correlated to inputs from a particular demographic group are identified.
Claims
1. An apparatus, comprising: a processor configured to: measure a length of time between a user input associated with a first one of requests received by a media content server over an electronic network and a user input associated with a second one of said requests, the requests originating from at least one requester device that is remote from the media content server; generate an input rate pattern for a first media based on the measurement; segment an input rate pattern for a second popular media that is different than the first media into a plurality of segments; determine whether the input rate pattern for the first media corresponds to one of the segments, wherein the second popular media is associated with popularity for a first time period, wherein said segment corresponds to a second time period, wherein a start of the second time period is prior to a start of the first time period; and in response to determining that the input rate pattern for the first media corresponds to said segment, assign a predetermined value to the first media.
2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to pair a third media with the first media based on the predetermined value.
3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the processor is further configured to communicate the third media along with the first media to a requester of the first media.
4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the third media comprises an advertisement, and wherein the processor is further configured to select the advertisement from a plurality of advertisements based on information of the first media.
5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the third media comprises web-based digital media content.
6. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein each advertisement of the plurality of advertisements comprises web-based digital media content.
7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the operations further comprising embedding a banner or a trailer on a web page responsive to the pairing.
8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein an early input rate that is of the input rate pattern for the second media and associated with said segment includes at least one of a request rate, a comment rate, a forwarding rate, a replay rate, a number of views, a number of adds to a favorites list or folder, or a click intensity rate.
9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first request and the second requests are of different input types of a plurality of request input types including at least two of view request types, replay request types, comment request types or forward request types.
10. A method, comprising: selecting, by a processor, from a plurality of first media, a first media to be paired with a second media, the method further comprising: tracking, by the processor, requests received by a media content server over an electronic network, the requests originating from at least one requester device that is remote from the media content server and corresponding to the plurality of first media; selecting, by the processor, a subset of requests corresponding to a third popular media, wherein the third popular media is associated with popularity for a first time period, and wherein the requests of the selected subset are from a second time period, and wherein a start of the second time period is prior to a start of the first time period; wherein the second media is different than each media of the plurality of first media, and wherein the third popular media is different than the second media and different than each media of the plurality of first media; measuring, by the processor, a length of time between a first request of the selected subset of requests and a second request of the selected subset of requests; and responsive to measuring the length of time between the first request and the second request, determining, by the processor, a request rate for the selected subset of requests; and segmenting, by the processor, an input rate pattern for the third popular media into a plurality of segments; determining, by the processor, whether an input rate pattern for at least one media of the plurality of first media corresponds to one of the segments, wherein said segment corresponds to the second time period; in response to determining that the input rate pattern for the at least one media of the plurality of first media corresponds to one of the segments, assigning, by the processor, a predetermined value to the at least one media of the plurality of first media; wherein the selection of the first media to be paired with the second media is responsive to the assignment and based on a result of the tracking and the determined request rate of the selected subset of requests; and storing, by the processor, said selection of said first media to be paired with the second media in a memory device.

The method of claim 10, wherein at least one of the input rate patterns comprises a multi-dimensional input rate pattern, and the method further comprises: measuring, by the processor, a length of time between a third request of the selected subset of requests and a fourth request of the selected subset of requests; wherein each of the first and second requests are of a first request type selected from a plurality of request types, and wherein each of the third and fourth requests are of a second request type of the plurality of request types, the second request type different than the first request type; responsive to measuring the length of time between the third request and the fourth request, determining, by the processor, the multi-dimensional request rate pattern using the results of the measurements; and wherein the selection of the first media to be paired with the second media is based on the result of the tracking and the determined multi-dimensional request rate pattern.
12. The method of claim 11, wherein the plurality of request types comprises at least two request types selected from views, replays, comments or forwards.
13. A computing device having access over an electronic network to a media content server, the computing device, comprising: a processor; and a memory device having instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by the processor cause the processor to perform a predefined first set of operations and a predefined second set of operations, the predefined first set of operations executable responsive to receipt by the computing device of a media pairing command identifying a first media to be paired with a portion of a plurality of second media stored on a storage accessible to the media content server, the predefined first set of operations including accessing a request rate obtained responsive to execution of the predefined second set of operations, and the predefined second set of operations pre-executable prior to execution of the predefined first set of operations, and including: selecting a portion of identified tracking information for requests for a third popular media, said requests for the third popular media received by the media content server over the electronic network and originating from at least one requester device that is remote from the media content server and the computing device; wherein the selected portion of the identified tracking information includes ones of said requests that are received during a first time period, wherein the third popular media is associated with popularity for a second time period, wherein a start of the first time period is prior to a start of the second time period; utilizing a measurement of a length of time between a first request of the selected portion of the identified tracking information and a second request of the selected portion of the identified tracking information to determine the request rate; wherein the first media is different than each second media of the plurality of second media, the third popular media is different than the first media and different than each second media of the plurality of second media, and the predefined first set of operations further includes: comparing said request rate to a request rate for the first media; and selecting, from the plurality of second media, a second media to be paired with the first media based on a result of the comparison; and storing information associated with said pairing selection in an electronic memory, wherein said comparing, selecting, and storing further comprise: generating an input rate pattern for the first media based on the request rate for the first media; segmenting an input rate pattern for the third popular media into a plurality of segments; determining whether the input rate pattern for the first media corresponds to one of the segments, wherein said segment corresponds to the second time period; and in response to determining that the input rate pattern for the first media corresponds to one of the segments, assigning a predetermined value to the first media.

The computing device of claim 13, wherein at least one of the input rate patterns comprises a multi-dimensional input rate pattern, and wherein second predefined set of operations further includes: measuring a length of time between a third request of the selected portion of the identified tracking information and a fourth request of the selected portion of the identified tracking information; wherein each of the first and second requests are of a first request type selected from a plurality of request types, and wherein each of the third and fourth requests are of a second request type of the plurality of request types, the second request type different than the first request type; responsive to measuring the length of time between the third request and the fourth request, determining the multi-dimensional request rate pattern using the results of the measurements; and utilizing the multi-dimensional request rate pattern to determine the request rate.
15. The computing device of claim 14, wherein the plurality of request types comprises at least two request types selected from views, replays, comments or forwards.
16. A method, comprising: measuring, by a processor, a length of time between a user input associated with a first one of requests received by a media content server over an electronic network and a user input associated with a second one of said requests, the requests originating from at least one requester device that is remote from the media content server; generating, by the processor, an input rate pattern for a first media based on the measurement; segmenting an input rate pattern for a second popular media that is different than the first media into a plurality of segments; determining, by the processor, whether the input rate pattern for the first media corresponds to one of the segments, wherein the second popular media is associated with popularity for a first time period, wherein said segment corresponds to a second time period, wherein a start of the second time period is prior to a start of the first time period; in response to determining that the input rate pattern for the first media corresponds to said segment, assigning a predetermined value to the first media; and storing, by the processor, data representative of the assigning in an electronic memory device.
17. The method of claim 16, further comprising pairing, by the processor, a third media with the first media based on the predetermined value.
18. The method of claim 17, further comprising communicating, by the processor, the third media along with the first media to a request device of the at least one request device.
19. The method of claim 17, wherein the third media comprises an advertisement, and wherein the method further comprises selecting, by the processor, the advertisement from a plurality of advertisements based on information of the first media.
20. The method of claim 19, wherein each advertisement of the plurality of advertisements comprises web-based digital media content.
21. The method of claim 17, wherein the third media comprises web-based digital media content.
22. The method of claim 16, wherein an early input rate that is of the input rate pattern for the second media and associated with said segment includes at least one of a request rate, a comment rate, a forwarding rate, a replay rate, a number of views, a number of adds to a favorites list or folder, or a click intensity rate.
23. An apparatus, comprising: a processor; and a memory device having instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising: measuring a length of time between a user input associated with a first one of requests received by a media content server over an electronic network and a user input associated with a second one of said requests, the requests originating from at least one requester device that is remote from the media content server; generating an input rate pattern for a first media based on the measurement; segmenting an input rate pattern for a second popular media that is different than the first media into a plurality of segments; determining whether the input rate pattern for the first media corresponds to one of the segments, wherein the second popular media is associated with popularity for a first time period, wherein said segment corresponds to a second time period, wherein a start of the second time period is prior to a start of the first time period; and in response to determining that the input rate pattern for the first media corresponds to said segment, assigning a predetermined value to the first media.
24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the instructions further comprise pairing a third media with the first media based on the predetermined value.
25. The apparatus of claim 24, wherein the instructions further comprise communicating the third media along with the first media to a requester of the first media.
26. The apparatus of claim 24, wherein the third media comprises an advertisement, and wherein the instructions further comprise selecting the advertisement from a plurality of advertisements based on information of the first media.
27. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein each advertisement of the plurality of advertisements comprises web-based digital media content.
28. The apparatus of claim 24, wherein the third media comprises web-based digital media content.
29. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein an early input rate that is of the input rate pattern for the second media and associated with said segment includes at least one of a request rate, a comment rate, a forwarding rate, a replay rate, a number of views, a number of adds to a favorites list or folder, or a click intensity rate.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
(6) An illustrative embodiment of the present invention provides a system for identifying whether certain web-based media or web-based videos are likely to become popular in general or popular with particular demographic groups. Illustrative embodiments automatically pair videos that are identified as having a strong likelihood of becoming popular with a particular demographic group to advertisements or other media appropriate for the particular demographic group. Media that are likely to be popular are identified by measuring early input rates such as request rates, comment rates, forwarding rates and reply rates of the media and optionally of copies of the media. Input rate patterns including pattern segments correlated to inputs from a particular demographic group are identified.
(7) Illustrative embodiments of the invention analyze data about the early input rates of previously popular media on a given website as compared to predictable patterns of consumer viewing. New media with input rate patterns similar to the previously popular media is flagged. For example, the illustrative embodiments may detect that 70% of all previously popular videos had, before the video became popular, (1) a request rate of 500 clicks per a given time interval, (2) a forward rate of 300 forwards per a given time interval, (3) a replay rate of 200 times per a given time interval, and (4) a comment rate of 300 comments per a given time interval. In the illustrative embodiment, videos that have input rates that are similar to those of previously popular videos are then flagged.
(8) Early input rate patterns of previously popular videos are used to predict the popularity of new media. For example, if an illustrative embodiment detects that 70% of all previously popular videos had at least early input rates of 500 clicks, forwards, and replays per half hour, then each time that a new video matches that criteria the appropriate advertisement will automatically be paired with that video to thereby detect and forecast media popularity. Patterns may include input intensity rates in which bursts of activity are recognized. An input intensity rate may be an average number of inputs per second each hour, for example. One means for measuring input intensity rate, according to an illustrative embodiment of the invention, is to measure the length of time between clicks over a given period of time.
(9) Illustratively, a request rate represents the number of times that viewers click on a video per given time interval for the purpose of watching the video. A click intensity rate may represent the number of views, replays, forwards, or comments per second during a particular period, for example, to measure the input intensity associated with each piece of media. A comment rate represents the number of viewers that comment on a video per given time interval. A forward rate represents the number of times the video clip is forwarded per given time interval. A replay rate represents the number of times the video clip is replayed by viewers per given time interval.
(10) Persons having ordinary skill in the art should appreciate that various means are known for acquiring click rates over networked computer systems. For example, advertisement servers have long counted click rates on networked computers to measure the effectiveness of various advertising campaigns such as banner advertisements on internet web sites.
(11) Although various embodiments of the invention are described primarily with reference to request rates, it should be understood that other input rates such as comment rates, forwarding rates and replay rates can be used according to the teachings of the present disclosure within the scope of the present invention. It is also explicitly contemplated within the scope of the present invention that input rate patterns may be multi-dimensional, for example, wherein more than one type of input rate is included in a pattern. An illustrative multi-dimensional input rate pattern could include an analysis of a combination of the number of request rates, forward rates, replay rates and comment rates per a given time interval or intervals, for example.
(12) Persons having ordinary skill in the art should appreciate that various means that are known for pattern matching can be used to perform the pattern matching steps of the various embodiments of the present invention. For example, such pattern matching can be performed by curve fitting using any one of a number of curve fitting software tools and well known algorithms.

(14) Requests for digital media are typically manifested as mouse-clicks by users requesting a download of the media from an internet website. When specific media content such as an imminently popular video segment either first becomes available, or is first noticed by viewers, an input pattern develops such as an initial spike 106 in requests for the content. Such initial popularity indicated by a first pattern segment 108 typically reflects interest in the media by a particular demographic group, such as young internet users, college students and/or other frequent video downloaders.

(16) In one example, an embodiment of the invention monitors click intensity rates wherein a pattern of high click intensity, i.e., short average time between user inputs over a period, are recognized as a pattern, or portion of a pattern, that may indicate imminent viral popularity of a piece of media. For example, an input rate that is averaging 100 clicks per second for one hour may be identified as a pattern that is predictive of imminent viral popularity of a video or other media item.

The processor 212 is further programmed to compare the monitored rates for with previously identified input rate patterns such as request rate patterns indicative of requesters being members of a demographically distinct group. The processor 212 is programmed to provide a message, such as a targeted advertisement, to the requester in response to the input rates matching the previously identified input rate pattern.
