DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF SELECTED SPECIFIC EMBODIMENTS
[0048] Novel features characteristic of embodiments provided in the present application are set forth in the appended claims. However, the embodiments themselves and further objectives and advantages thereof, will best be understood by reference to the following detailed description when read in conjunction with the accompanying figures, wherein:
[0049]
[0050] The umbrella support device 400 first includes a cylindrical body 410. The cylindrical body 410 has a lower end 412 and an upper end 414. Thus, it is evident from the views of
[0051] Extending up from the cylindrical body 410 in each of
[0052] The threaded extension piece 420 includes threads 425 along a portion of its length. The threads 425 are dimensioned to connect to a threaded inner diameter, such as inner diameter 315 of an anchor base, such as anchor base 310. Also of interest, the threaded extension piece 420 includes a hex key 422. The hex key 422 is dimensioned to mate with an end comprising a recess, such as upper end 322, of the anchor bolt 320. In this way, the cylindrical body 410 may be beneficially used as a tool to remove the anchor bolt 320 from the anchor base 310, or to screw the anchor bolt 320 into the anchor base 310.
[0053] It can also be seen that the cylindrical body 410 has received a security pin 700. The security pin 700 engages with a through-opening (shown at 470 in

[0062] Preferably, the canopy 910 may be selectively opened by pushing upward on a frame structure of the canopy 910. Further, the canopy 910 may also be selectively closed by releasing a latch (not shown) and then pulling on the frame structure associated with the canopy 910.
[0063] In an alternative arrangement, the canopy 910 may be opened and closed by rotating a handle 915. Further, the canopy 910 may also be held in place with a retaining pin (not shown).
[0064] The patio umbrella 900 also includes a support pole 920. The support pole 920 is preferably an elongated tubular pole fabricated from a lightweight metal such as aluminum. The support pole 920 is dimensioned to be slidably received within the bore 415 of the cylindrical body 410. The support pole 920 may further be configured in varying lengths and may comprise a telescoping mechanism (not shown) to further increase or decrease a height of the patio umbrella 900. Additionally, the support pole 920 may comprise a tilt joint (not shown).
[0065] Based on the description provided above for the umbrella support device 400 and for the patio umbrella 900, a method of erecting a patio umbrella is provided herein.
[0066] In one embodiment, the method 1000 first comprises locating an anchor for a swimming pool cover. This is shown in Box 1010. The anchor comprises an anchor base (such as anchor base 310) secured in a decking (such as pool deck 110). The anchor also comprises an anchor bolt (such as anchor bolt 320) threadedly inserted into the anchor base. Preferably, each of the anchor base and the anchor bolt is fabricated from brass.
[0067] The method 1000 also includes providing an umbrella support device. This step is seen at Box 1015. The umbrella support device may be in accordance with the umbrella support device 400 described above, in any of its embodiments. The umbrella support device may include: [0068] a cylindrical body having an upper end and a lower end; [0069] a bore extending down from the upper end; and [0070] a threaded extension piece secured to and extending down from the lower end, wherein the threaded extension piece is configured to threadedly connect to the anchor base.
[0071] In the method 1000, the cylindrical body defines an inner diameter (such as bore 415) dimensioned to receive a support pole of the patio umbrella. In one aspect, the cylindrical body and the threaded extension piece are fabricated from ceramic or aluminum.
[0072] The method 1000 further comprises removing the anchor bolt from the anchor base. This is seen at Box 1020. In one aspect, the umbrella support device further comprises a hex key tip. The hex key tip resides at a distal end of the threaded extension piece. The hex key tip is configured to mate with a hex key recess of the anchor bolt. In this instance, the step 1020 of removing the anchor bolt from the anchor base comprises using the hex key tip to unscrew the anchor bolt from the anchor base.
[0073] The method 1000 may further include screwing the threaded extension piece into the anchor base. This step is indicated at Box 1025. In this way, the cylindrical body is now in a vertical orientation, ready to receive the support pole of the patio umbrella.
[0074] In one embodiment, the method 1000 further comprises providing the patio umbrella. This is shown at Box 1030 of
[0075] The method 1000 additionally includes removing a security pin from the cylindrical body of the umbrella support device. This is provided at Box 1035. The security pin may be in accordance with pin 700 described above. In this instance, removing the security pin 700 involves unthreading the pin 700 from a threaded opening 470 in the cylindrical body 410 of the umbrella support device.
[0076] The method 1000 additionally includes opening the canopy 910. This step is seen in Box 1040 of
[0077] The method 1000 further provides inserting the support pole into the bore of the cylindrical body. This is indicated at Box 1045. This allows the patio umbrella to now be supported in an open and upright position above the decking.
[0078] The method 1000 finally includes re-inserting the security pin into the cylindrical body of the umbrella support device. This is shown at Box 1050. This step secures the umbrella above the umbrella anchor device.
