DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0107] As used herein, substantially, approximately, and/or about means an acceptable variation according to conventional standards, otherwise at most a 5% to 10% variation from an indicated effect or value.
[0108] Moreover, it will be appreciated that positional descriptions such as above, top, below, forward, rearward left, right and the like should, unless otherwise indicated, be taken in the context of the figures and correspond to the position and orientation of the modular seating assembly and corresponding parts when supported on the ground/floor in a normal use configuration, with the top corresponding to a position closer to a seating surface of the modular seating assembly and the below corresponding to the ground/floor supporting the modular seating assembly. Positional descriptions should not be considered limiting.
[0109] References to the terms couple, couples, coupled, coupling, or the like, refer to a fixed or secure connection between two parts, whether or not there is a third or more intermediate parts between the two parts, such as a washer. For greater clarity, the terms couple, couples, coupled, or coupling refer to a connection that remains fixed or secure regardless of the orientation of the two parts. For example, reference to two parts being coupled can refer to two parts being fixedly or securely connected via a fastener but would exclude two parts being attached via an interlocking relationship between the two parts, such as a groove and tongue relationship or a protrusion and depression relationship, which does not remain fixed or secure when the orientation of the grooved part and the tongue part are moved.
[0110] References to the terms support, supports, supported, or supporting, or the like, refer to an uncoupled relationship between two parts, wherein the part providing the support bears all or part of the weight of the part being supported without being fixedly or securely coupled thereto. For example, reference to a first part being supported by a second part can refer to the first part resting upon a section or surface of the second part.
[0111] References to the terms engage, engages, engaged, engaging, or the like, refer to a connection between two parts that does not remain fixed or secure when the orientation of the two parts are placed in a different orientation. For example, a tongue and groove relationship or a protrusion and depression relationship between two parts can be referred to as the first part engaging with the second part.
[0112] There is provided a leg module for a modular seating assembly. The modular seating assembly includes a plurality of modules that, when assembled, can form multiple types of seating arrangements. For example, the modular seating assembly can be assembled into a seating arrangement, such as an ottoman, a chair, a loveseat, a 3-seater sofa, a 4-seater sofa, a 3-seater corner sofa, a 4-seater corner sectional sofa, an end sofa, etc. In some embodiments, the seating arrangement is an outdoor seating arrangement, such as a patio chair, patio couch, etc., or an indoor seating arrangement, such as a couch, love seat, etc.
[0113] The leg module includes a leg portion and a flange mounted to the leg portion. In an embodiment, the flange extends substantially normal to the leg portion and on both sides thereof. The flange is configured to couple to a first one of two adjacent modules and provide support to a second one of the two adjacent modules without requiring the flange to be coupled to the second one of the two adjacent modules. By providing a support section that does not require coupling to the second one of the two adjacent modules, the modular seating assembly can be assembled without requiring the assembler to upend or turn over all of the adjacent end modules and/or seat modules when they engage with each other. For example, each individual module can be upended or turned over to couple the leg modules to one side of the module and returned upright prior to coupling and/or engaging the adjacent modules with each other.
[0114] In some embodiments, the coupling section of the flange can be coupled to the underside of a single seat module when assembling the seating arrangement and, once upright, an adjacent seat module can be placed on top of the support section of the flange. This allows the assembler to assemble each individual seat module and leg module prior to assembling the seating arrangement in an upright position, without having to overturn or flip the two adjacent seat modules on their side or back to attach the leg modules.
[0115] In some embodiments, the flange on the leg module includes a top surface having a coupling section configured to couple to the first one of the two adjacent modules and a support section configured to provide support to the second one of the two adjacent modules. In some embodiments, the leg module comprises an anti-rotation means that is configured to prevent a rotation of the leg portion of the leg module relative to the two adjacent modules.

[0129] In some embodiments, such as shown in
[0130] The flange 44 includes an aperture 46 on the coupling side of the flange 44 that is configured to receive a fastener therethrough to couple the leg module 40 to a seat module 30. In the exemplary embodiments, the aperture 46 is on the second side 10b of the flange 44. When in the assembled configuration, the leg module 40 is coupled to an underside of a given seat module 30 via a fastener through the aperture 46 and an adjacent seat module 30 or an end module 20 on a first side 10a of the given seat module 30 is supported by the support section 44a of the flange 44.
[0131] In some embodiments, the flange 44 includes an anti-rotation means that is configured to prevent rotation of the leg module 40 when in the assembled configuration. Accordingly, the anti-rotation means can include any means that prevents the rotation of the leg module 40 relative to the given module when coupled together and/or relative to the adjacent module supported by the support section 44a. By preventing rotation of the leg module 40, the support side of the flange 44 on the leg module 40 can provide continuous support for the end module 20 or seat module 30 that rests upon the support section 44a of the flange 44.
[0132] For example, with reference to the leg module 40 shown in
[0133] Other anti-rotation means are also contemplated, such as a tongue and groove relationship or protrusion and depression relationship between the top surface of the flange 44 and the underside of the given module that the leg module 40 is coupled to or the adjacent module that the leg module 40 is supporting. For example, as shown in
[0134] In some embodiments, the anti-rotation means can include a removable coupling between the support section 44a of the flange 44 and an underside of the adjacent module and/or a removable coupling between the coupling section 44b of the flange 44 and an underside of the given module the leg module 40 is coupled to. For example, the removable coupling can be a hook and loop fastener, male and female connectors, such as plug, pin or prong connectors that are configured to couple with a socket, receptacle, or slot connector. In some embodiments, the removable coupling between the support section 44a and/or the coupling section 44a and an underside of the adjacent module or given module can be a click-fit or snap-fit, such that the adjacent module and/or the given module can be removably coupled to the top surface in an upright position, without requiring the assembler to access an underside of both the adjacent module and the given module.
[0135] In some embodiments, the anti-rotation means can include one or more protrusions, projections, or other form of extension that extends upwards from the top surface of the flange that is configured to prevent rotation of the leg module by being wedged or rendered immobile against a surface of the given module the leg module 40 is coupled to or the adjacent module. For example, the support section 44a and/or the coupling section 44b can include one or more protrusion or projection extending from a front edge (for leg modules 40 coupled to the front side of the module) or a back edge (for leg modules 40 coupled to the back side of the module). Accordingly, the leg module 40 would be prevented from rotating as the protrusion(s) would be wedged or rendered immobile against the front side (in the case of front leg modules 40) or the back side (in the case of back leg modules 40). In some embodiments, the protrusions or projections can be wedged against or rendered immobile by the front, back, and/or sides of the module or the adjacent module. In some embodiments, the protrusion or projection can be located on an underside of the module, such that the leg module can be wedge against or rendered immobile by the projections or protrusions.

[0179] For greater clarity, for the purposes of assembly, the first end module 20a is the first module and the second end module 20b is the last module. Accordingly, the sofa seating arrangement can be assembled by coupling one or more leg modules 40 to the second side 10b of each of a plurality of modules except for the last module (in the exemplary embodiment, the first end module 20a and the first, second, and third seat modules 30.sub.1-3), and after coupling the leg modules to the plurality of modules except for the last module and while in an upright position, engaging the first side 10a of each of the plurality of modules except for the first module (in the exemplary embodiment, the first, second, and third seat modules 30.sub.1-3 and the second end module 20b) with the second side 10b of an adjacent one of the plurality of modules except for the last module.
[0180] With reference to
[0181] For greater clarity, for the purposes of assembly, the first end module 20a is the first module and the second end module 20b is the last module. Accordingly, the sofa seating arrangement can be assembled by coupling one or more leg modules 40 to a coupling side of each of a plurality of modules except for the last module. In the exemplary embodiment, the coupling side of the first end module 20a and the first, second, and fourth seat modules 30.sub.1,2,4 is the second side 10b of the module and the coupling side of the corner seat module 30c is a front side of the module. It is understood that in the exemplary embodiment, the second side 10b of the fourth seat module 30.sub.4 is a front side of the fourth seat module 30.sub.4 when assembled; however, for clarity, in the exemplary embodiment, the fourth seat module 30.sub.4 is the same as the first and second seat modules 30.sub.1,2 and thus the sides referred to herein refer to the sides from the perspective of the person sitting in the chair formed by the seating module 30. After coupling the leg modules 40 to the plurality of modules except for the last module and while in an upright position, the assembler can engage an opposing or adjacent side of each of the plurality of modules except for the first module with the coupling side of an adjacent one of the plurality of modules except for the last module. In the exemplary embodiment, the opposing side of the first, second, and fourth seat modules 30.sub.1,2,4, the corner seat module 30c, and the second end module 20b is a first side 10a thereof.

[0184] Any other configurations of couplings or engagements between adjacent modules are also contemplated, such as the connections between an end module 20 and a seat module 30, corner seat module 30c, or a backrest module or between adjacent seat modules 30 or corner seat modules 30c. For example, adjacent modules can include a first part 37 or a second part 39 of a coupling means on a back, front, or top side thereof, such that the modules do not need to be flipped to couple the adjacent modules. In some embodiments, the coupling means are covered by fabric or a cushion 12, 14. In some embodiments, the adjacent modules are only coupled to and/or engaged with each other via the connectors and receivers, or the male and female connectors described herein. Other known couplings means are also possible.
Seating Arrangements
[0185] As described above, any number of seat modules 30 can be used with the modular seating assembly 10, to create the desired seating arrangement. For example, the plurality of modules can be arranged to form an ottoman or a chair, both of which would include a single seat module 30. In some embodiments, the modular seating assembly 10 includes one end module 20, one seat module 30, at least one support leg 58, and one leg module 40 that extends at least a majority of the depth of the seating module 30, such as the leg modules 40e, 40f shown in
[0186] Alternatively, the modular seating assembly 10 can be arranged as a loveseat that includes two seat modules 30, a sofa or couch that includes three, four, or more seat modules 30, depending on the desired length, or a corner sofa, which similarly can include three, four, five, or more seat modules 30 depending on the desired size. For example, a loveseat seating arrangement can include a single leg module that extends a majority of the depth of the seat modules 30, such as leg modules 40e, 40f shown in
[0187] Other arrangements using different combinations of leg modules 40 and support legs 58 are also contemplated, such as an end sofa seating arrangement. The end sofa is a sofa with only one arm (i.e., only one end module 20), for example so that the non-arm side of the sofa can be placed against a wall. In this embodiment, one of the end modules 20 can be replaced with a leg module 40 with a flange 44 that does not extend on the support side (i.e., does not include a support section 44a) or one or more support legs 58.
[0188] In some embodiments, the modular seating assembly 10 can be assembled in a daybed or bench seating arrangement. For example, the outer sides of the first seat module 30.sub.1 and the end seat module 30 (such as a third seat module 30.sub.3) can be supported by one or more support legs 58, whereas the first seat module 30.sub.1 and the second seat module 30.sub.2 and/or the second seat module 30.sub.2 and the third seat module 30.sub.3 are supported by a leg module 40e, 40f or two leg modules 40.
[0189] Other configurations are also contemplated, such as a sectional couch with two or three corner seat modules 30c, for example a wrap around couch, or four corner seat modules 30c to define an enclosed space, such as a playpen.
[0190] In some embodiments, the modular seating assembly 10 can be configured for outdoor use, such as patio furniture. In some embodiments, one or more of the modules (i.e., the end modules, the seat module, the backrest modules, and/or the leg modules) can comprise a waterproof or water-resistant material. For example, one or more of the modules can comprise metal, such as aluminum, wrought iron, stainless steel, cast iron, cast aluminum, etc.; plastic, such as polyethylene (PE), including high-density PE (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), etc. or other materials, such as wicker or teak. In some embodiments, each of the modules comprise aluminum or cast aluminum.
[0191] Consideration to the environment the furniture is intended for should be given when choosing the material and/or configuration of the perforations. For example, when the assembled seating arrangements are configured for outdoor use, such as patio furniture, one or more of the modules can be hollow or include portions comprising a hollow tubing. Providing hollow modules reduces the overall weight of the modular seating assembly and allows for easier storage when not in use. Similarly, when intended for outdoor use, one or more of the hollow modules can also include at least one perforation in a bottom side thereof to allow moisture, such as rainwater or other liquids, that may have accumulated inside the modules to drain via gravity.
[0192] In other embodiments, the modular seating assembly 10 can be configured for indoor use, such as a couch or sectional couch. In some embodiments, one or more of the modules (i.e., the end modules 20, the seat modules 30, the corner seat module 30c, the backrest modules 50, and/or the leg modules 40) can include a metal frame. In the exemplary embodiment, the end modules 20, the seat modules 30, and the backrest modules 50 are covered in fabric, such as cotton, leather, polyester, synthetic fibers, linen, wool, silk, chenille, velvet, etc. or any combinations thereof.
Other Configurations
[0193] While seating furniture are described above, it is understood that the features of the modular seating assembly described herein can be applied to other types of modular furniture. For example, a modular furniture assembly can include end modulars flanking one or more platform module to form a table, end table, desk, bed, shelves, etc.
[0194] In such embodiments, the end modules can include some or all of the features as described for the end modules 20. Depending on the type of furniture being assembled, the end modules 20 and/or the leg modules 40 can be adjusted for height, length, and/or width.
[0195] The platform module can include some or all of the features as described for the seat module 30. Depending on the type of furniture being assembled, the platform modules can be adjusted for length and width. In some embodiments, the modular furniture assembly can include a single planar top that is configured to be removably coupled to and/or engaged with one or more platform modules, or alternatively, a plurality of planar tops that are removable coupled to and/or engaged with each of the platform modules. For example, similar to the cushions 12, 14 being removably coupled to and/or engaged with the seat modules 30 and/or backrest modules 50, the planar top, such as a tabletop, can be removably coupled to and/or engaged with the platform modules to provide a table of adjustable length.
[0196] The skilled artisan will understand that these features can be applied to various types of furniture. For example, similar to the corner sofa assembly, a modular furniture assembly can include end modulars flanking three or more platform modules with one of the platform modules being a corner platform module to form a corner desk.
