Abstract
A fishing hook guard is provided. The fishing hook guard includes two or more shells that can be coupled together to enclose a hook of a fishing implement. Each shell features a centrally aligned half aperture, forming a complete aperture when joined in a closed configuration. In the closed configuration, the shells are secured via a fastener, creating a closed guard with a flat disk and a sidewall extending from one side. The combined sidewall and disk form an open cylinder for accommodating the fishing hook. When opened, the shells separate, exposing the fishing hook.
Claims
1. A fishing hook guard, comprising: two or more shells adapted to couple to each other and enclose around a hook of a fishing implement; wherein each shell includes a partial aperture so as to form an aperture when coupled together sized to receive a fishing hook shank therethrough; wherein a closed configuration, the two or more shells are coupled via a fastener to form a closed guard, the closed guard comprising: a flat annular disk having the aperture therethrough; a sidewall extending from a first side of the disk and terminates at a fixed distance from the disk forming an open lower end opposite the disk; wherein the sidewall forms a coextensive exterior surface; wherein the sidewall and disk forms an open cylinder having an interior volume sized to entirely receive the hook therein.
2. The fishing hook guard of claim 1, wherein an open configuration, the two or more shells are separated from each other thereby allowing for the removal of the hook of the fishing implement.
3. The fishing hook guard of claim 1, wherein the partial aperture is centrally aligned.
4. The fishing hook guard of claim 3, wherein the flat disc comprises an advertising section.
5. The fishing hook guard of claim 4, wherein the advertising section is disposed on a single shell.
6. The fishing hook guard of claim 3, wherein a lower edge of each shell is flat and configured to rest atop a horizontal surface such that the sidewall is perpendicular thereto.
7. The fishing hook guard of claim 3, wherein each shell is comprised from a single integral member.
8. The fishing hook guard of claim 3, wherein the fastener is disposed on a lateral edge of the sidewall, wherein the lateral edge of the sidewall faces outwards.
9. The fishing hook guard of claim 8, wherein the fastener includes a corresponding tab and slot.
10. The fishing hook guard of claim 8, wherein each shell is adapted identical such that a third shell may be interchanged with a first shell and still be configured to fasten to the second shell.
11. The fishing hook guard of claim 1, wherein a length of the sidewall is shorter than a diameter of the closed guard.
12. The fishing hook guard of claim 1, wherein the aperture comprises a diameter sized to receive a only single shank of the hook.
13. The fishing hook guard of claim 1, further comprising a second fishing hook guard to secure around a second hook of the fishing implement.

The closed guard 2100 forms a flat disk 2400 with the complete aperture 2200 positioned generally centrally. In the shown embodiment, the disk 2400 is annular, however in alternative embodiments, the disk 2400 may have other shapes and dimensions such as rectangular, oval, and the like. The complete aperture 2200 is sized to receive a shank of the hook 5100 such that the barb is positioned within the enclosure and the eye of the hook is positioned outside the enclosure. The complete aperture 2200 is also sized to prevent the barb from sliding through the aperture 2200 thereby preventing the hook from exiting the closed guard 2100.
[0025] In one embodiment, a sidewall 2300 extends from the perimeter 2210 of the disk 2400 which cooperatively forms an open cylinder. The open cylinder created by the sidewall 2300 and disk 2400 has an interior volume sized to entirely receive and enclose the hook 5100 of the fishing implement 5000. This prevents snapping of other objects such as other hooks, cloths, hands, and the like. In the shown embodiment, the sidewall 2300 terminates at a fixed distance from the disk 2300, resulting in an open lower end 2500 opposite the disk 2400. This open lower end 2500 allows for moisture of the hook 5100 to drip off the hook or otherwise evaporate. In this way, the hook guard 1000 minimizes rust buildup on the hook 5100. In one embodiment, the sidewall is extended to fit a larger and longer hook.

The sidewall 2300 and disk 2400 may be integrally made from a single piece of extruded and molded plastic. In alternative embodiments, the hook guard 1000 is constructed from metal or foam.
