Abstract
A rail-road intermodal freight system. In an embodiment, a conveyor system is provided for placing rail cars in a position for loading shipping containers thereon, while an over-the-road trailer is secured to the rail car. Rail cars have a frame with a front end and a rear end, and a bogie having at least four flanged rail wheels is pivotally mounted to the rear of the frame of the rail car. A method for unloading the rail cars includes lifting the front of the frame of the rail cars and pivoting the rail cars by an angle alpha from the track direction at an unloading area, and lowering the front end of the frame to the ground to allow truck access to trailers on the rail car. By utilizing the method, efficient loading and unloading of train involved in intermodal shipments may save considerable time, and thus reduce costs.
Claims
1. A method for intermodal transport of over-the-road trailers via railroad, comprising: (a) providing a plurality of rail cars, each one of said plurality of rail cars comprising a frame, said frame having a front and a rear, said frame further comprising a deck extending between a deck first end and a deck second end, said deck sized and shaped for receiving and supporting an over-the-road trailer or semi-trailer; a pair of flanged main rail wheels located at or near the rear of said frame and near said deck second end; a suspension system supporting said frame above said pair of flanged main rail wheels; a pair of unsprung flanged auxiliary rail wheels, said flanged auxiliary rail wheels located forward of said flanged main rail wheels and positioned closer to said deck first end than to said deck second end, and disposed downwardly from said frame by opposing first and second gear leg struts, said first and second gear leg struts spaced apart by a cross-brace, said flanged auxiliary rail wheels configured to support said rail car while traversing a rail siding; a conveyor hook, said conveyor hook extending below said frame, said conveyor hook having an arm with a proximal end pivotally affixed to said frame and a distal end with a downwardly extending hook portion extending therefrom; extending upward from said frame, a hitch, said hitch comprising a steel mating plate and clamping jaws, said clamping jaws adapted to lock thereto a king pin extending downward from an over-the-road trailer; (b) providing a plurality of over-the-road trailers, said over-the-road trailers configured for receiving and securely transporting shipping containers; (c) providing a first rail siding, said first rail siding located adjacent a source of shipping containers, said first rail siding comprising a pair of rails; (d) affixing one of said over-the-road trailers to a selected rail car from said plurality of rail cars; (e) providing a conveyor system, said conveyor system having a first end and a second end, and a drag chain for moving rail cars from said first end to said second end; (f) moving said selected rail car to a loading position adjacent said source of shipping containers by engaging said conveyor hook on said selected rail car to said drag chain; (g) disengaging said conveyor hook from said drag chain to halt movement of said rail car; (h) lifting a selected shipping container from said source of shipping containers, and then lowering said selected shipping container and mounting said selected shipping container to one of said over-the-road trailers; and (i) reengaging said conveyor hook with said drag chain to move said selected one of said plurality of rail cars to said second end of said conveyor system.
2. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the end of said conveyor system comprises a railroad train assembly area, said method further comprising affixing a first one of a selected plurality of rail cars to a dolly.
3. The method as set forth in claim 2, wherein the source of shipping containers is organized by destination, and wherein said shipping containers are loaded to said rail cars in groups by destination, and wherein rail cars in a selected plurality of rail cars is provided with a separate dolly for each destination.
4. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein said first rail siding is located on a wharf, and wherein said source of shipping containers is a ship.
5. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the step of disengaging said conveyor hook from said drag chain comprises lifting a cross-brace on said rail car sufficiently so as to disengage said conveyor hook from said drag chain.

The method as set forth in claim 5, wherein during the step of mounting said selected shipping container to an over-the-road trailer on one of said plurality of rail cars, said method further comprising supporting said cross-brace a height above said pair of rails sufficient to allow said drag chain to move without engaging said conveyor hook.
7. The method as set forth in claim 6, wherein upward movement of said cross-brace is provided by a pivot board, as said drag chain moves one of said plurality of rail cars.
8. The method as set forth in claim 7, wherein after loading of said shipping container on said over-the-road trailer, the method further comprising moving said pivot stop so as to remove support for said cross-brace, to thereby allow said conveyor hook to reengage said drag chain.
9. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the over-the-road trailer being transported comprises an upper mating plate and a king pin, and wherein said rail car further comprises a fifth wheel mating plate with adjacent spring loaded clamping jaws, said fifth wheel mating plate and clamping jaws adapted to lock the king pin to secure the over-the-road trailer, and wherein said method further comprises affixing one of said over-the-road trailers to a selected rail car by locking the king pin in said clamping jaws.
10. A rail car for carriage of over-the-road trailers on railroads, comprising: a rail car, said rail car comprising a bogie, said bogie comprising a chassis operably supporting at least four flanged main rail wheels, said bogie comprising a suspension package between said four flanged main rail wheels and said chassis; a frame, said frame having a front and a rear, said frame pivotally supported above said bogie, said frame generally L-shaped and having a front end and a rear end, said frame comprising a deck for support of said over-the-road trailer, said deck extending between first end and a second end, said deck adapted to slope downward toward said second end during rail transit operation, and wherein said deck comprises a left track portion and a right track portion, said left track portion and said right track portion each sized and shaped for support of an over-the-road trailer having dual left wheels and dual right wheels, and wherein said left track portion has a first inner edge, and wherein said right track portion has a second inner edge, and where said first inner edge and said second inner edge define a gap between said left track portion and said right track portion; a generally vertically extending bumper located at or adjacent the second end of said deck; a rear base, said rear base located rearward of said bumper, said rear base having (a) a lower side and (b) and an upper side; a front coupler and a rear coupler; and a hitch, said hitch adapted for securing a selected over-the-road trailer to said rail car; and wherein said rail car is adapted for transport of an over-the-road trailer having landing gear, and wherein said right track portion and said left track portion are sized and shaped for passage through said deck of said landing gear.
11. A method for intermodal transport of over-the-road trailers via railroad, comprising: providing a plurality of rail cars, said rail cars comprising (a) a frame, said frame generally L-shaped and having a front end and a rear end, said frame having one or more support members at the front end thereof; (b) a deck for support of an over-the-road trailer, said deck extending between first end and a second end, said deck adapted to slope downward toward said second end during rail operation, (c) a generally vertically extending bumper located at or adjacent the second end of said deck, (d) a rear base, said rear base located rearward of said bumper, said rear base having a lower side and an upper side, (e) a bogie, said bogie pivotally mounted to said frame, said bogie located at or near said rear end of said frame, said bogie comprising at least two axles each connected to a pair of flanged rail wheels, said bogie configured for rail operation, (f) a front coupler, (g) a rear coupler, and (h) a hitch, said hitch adapted for securing an over-the-road trailer to said rail car; providing a plurality of over-the-road trailers; placing one of said over-the-road trailers on one of said plurality of rail cars; securing one of said over-the-road trailers to one of said plurality of rail cars with said hitch; moving said plurality of rail cars having a plurality of over-the-road trailers thereon to an unloading location; providing a rail siding having a pair of opposing first and second rails at said unloading location; providing adjacent said rail siding, storage space for said plurality of rail cars, said storage space for said plurality of rail cars configured to accommodate said plurality of rail cars when rail cars in said plurality of rail cars are in an angled configuration, and wherein each rail car is spaced apart from adjacent rail cars, and wherein said storage space further comprises ground having a tractor accessible roadway; providing a lift to lift at or near said front end of said frame of said rail cars, one rail car after the other; lifting at or near said front end of a first rail car, to turn said rail car and place the rail car at a selected angle alpha (a) away from first and second rail orientation; lowering the front end of said rail car to ground, so that the deck of said rail car is accessible to a tractor; and providing a tractor, and removing said over-the-road trailer from said rail car using said tractor.
12. The method as set forth in claim 11, wherein said over-the-road trailer comprises a semi-trailer having extended landing gear, and wherein said method further comprises releasing said hitch before lowering said front end of said rail car to said ground.
13. The method as set forth in claim 11, further comprising loading a semi-trailer on said rail car using said tractor.
14. The method as set forth in claim 13, further comprising lifting a first rail car at a front end, to turn said rail car and place the rail car in line with a track direction.
15. The method as set forth in claim 11, wherein said rail cars each comprise one or more support members, said support members extending forward at said front end of said frame, said one or more support members of length LS sufficient to reach said upper side of said rear base of a next forward rail car in said plurality of rail cars, when said plurality of rail cars are placed back-to-back to form at least a portion of a train.
16. The method as set forth in claim 15, further comprising resting said one or more support members on said upper side of said rear base of a next forward rail car in said plurality of rail cars.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0018] Unique equipment and methods for use of such equipment in ship-to-rail-to-road intermodal freight systems are set forth herein. Some of the equipment useful in carrying out the method(s) described herein was previously described in U.S. Pat. No. 8,800,452 B2, issued Aug. 12, 2014, to David KUN, and entitled Railroad Freight Car Loading or Unloading, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein in its entirety by this reference. The illustrations provided in this disclosure are directed at embodiments utilizing the most common trailer design seen in over-the-road applications in North America, namely, a semi-trailer. By definition, a semi-trailer is a trailer without a front axle. In semi-trailers, a large proportion of the weight in the semi-trailer is supported by an over-the-road tractor. Semi-trailers are normally equipped with landing gear, namely legs which can be lowered, to support the semi-trailer when it is detached from the over-the-road tractor. In many parts of the world, an over-the-road tractor coupled to a semi-trailer is known as a semi-trailer truck or more commonly, simply as a semi. However, it should be understood that equipment and methods described herein may be applied to other types of trailers, including those having a front axle and attachment tongue and hitch, and thus the intermodal system design described herein should not be limited to semi-trailers per se, but should be understood to be useful in the quick loading and unloading of various over-the-road trailer designs.

[0035] The apparatus described above is expected to be useful in reducing the time and labor requirements for loading shipping containers 24 on to trailers 22 utilized in intermodal ship-to-rail-to road shipments. First, a plurality of rail cars 20 are provided. Then, a plurality of over-the-road trailers 22 are provided. The over-the-road trailers are configured for receiving and securely transporting shipping containers 24. A first rail siding is provided located adjacent a source of shipping containers 24. In an embodiment, a first rail siding may be located on a wharf 170, and in such case, the source of shipping containers 24 may be a ship 150. The first rail siding includes a pair of rails 25A and 25B. An over-the-road trailer 22 is affixed to a selected rail car 20. A conveyor system 27 provided. Such conveyor system 27 includes a first 221 and a second 222 end, and a drag chain 29 for moving rail cars 20 from the first end 221 to the second end 222. A selected rail car 20 is moved to a loading position adjacent the source of shipping containers by engaging a conveyor hook 23 on the rail car 20 to the drag chain 29. When appropriately positioned, the conveyor hook 23 is disengaged from the drag chain 29 to halt movement of the rail car 20. A selected shipping container 24A from the source of shipping containers is secured and lifted by a crane 152, and then lowered and mounted to an over-the-road trailer 22 on one of the plurality of rail cars 20. Subsequently, the conveyor hook 23 is reengaged with the drag chain 29 to move the rail car 20 to the second end 222 of said conveyor system 27.
