[0014] Repeat use of reference characters in the present specification and drawings is intended to represent the same or analogous features or elements of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0015] Reference now will be made in detail to embodiments of the invention, one or more examples of which are illustrated in the drawings. Each example is provided by way of explanation of the invention, not limitation of the invention. In fact, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications and variations can be made in the present invention without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention. For instance, features illustrated or described as part of one embodiment can be used with another embodiment to yield a still further embodiment. Thus, it is intended that the present invention covers such modifications and variations as come within the scope of the appended claims and their equivalents.
[0016] In general, the present subject matter is directed to fasteners for measuring and marking surfaces. Specifically, the disclosed fastener is configured for use in association with chalk lines, chalk line reels, and any other suitable measuring reel. The fastener may include a body with an opening configured to receive the chalk line. As will be described below, the fastener may include a pin and a clip generally configured to secure the chalk line to a material, such as constructive material. In one embodiment, the fastener may generally be secured to a surface of the material via driving the pin into the material. Additionally or alternatively, the fastener may generally be secured to an edge of the material via the clip. By configuring the fastener as disclosed herein, the fastener may be advantageous when a user is operating alone and may provide secure hold of the chalk line in the middle of the material.
[0017] As stated above, the disclosed fastener is configured for use in association with chalk lines, chalk line reels, and any other suitable measuring reel. In one example, the fastener may be tied to the chalk line and the line is reeled into a housing of the reel. The housing may be filled with chalk that transfers to the chalk line as the chalk line is pulled out from the reel. The fastener may then be secured to the surface of the material via driving the pin into the material. Thus, when the reel side of the line is secured as desired, chalk can then be transferred to material by a quick snap of the line.
[0018] Referring now to
[0019] Moreover, in some example embodiments, the first side 124 of the fastener 100 may be between one half centimeter (0.5 cm) and three centimeters (3 cm) from the second side 126 in the lateral direction L. In other example embodiments, the first side 124 of the fastener 100 may be between one centimeter (1 cm) and two centimeters (2 cm) from the second side 126 in the lateral direction L, such as the first side 124 of the fastener 100 may be between one and one-quarter centimeters (1.25 cm) and one and three-quarters centimeters (1.75 cm) from the second side 126 in the lateral direction L. The opening 104 of body 102 may be defined by a first edge 103, a second edge 105, and a third edge 107 of the body 102. The opening 104 may be generally configured to receive a chalk line, such as chalk line 130. In the current example embodiment, opening 104 may generally be triangularly shaped, as defined by the first edge 103, the second edge 105, and the third edge 107. In other example embodiments, opening 104 may be rectangular, square, circular, or any other suitable shape to receive chalk line 130.
[0020] As may be seen in
[0021] Referring now to
[0022] A distal end of the spacer 108 from body 102 defines a front end 118 of the fastener 100. For example, fastener 100 may extend between front end 118 of the fastener 100 and tip 122 of pin 106 in the transverse direction T. In particular, in some example embodiments, the front end 118 of the fastener 100 may be between one half centimeter (0.5 cm) and three centimeters (3 cm) from the tip 122 of the pin 106 in the transverse direction T. In other example embodiments, front end 118 of the fastener 100 may be between one centimeter (1 cm) and two centimeters (2 cm) from the tip 122 of the pin 106 in the transverse direction T, such as front end 118 of the fastener 100 may be between one and one-quarter centimeters (1.25 cm) and one and three-quarters centimeters (1.75 cm) from the tip 122 of the pin 106 in the transverse direction T.
[0023] Referring now to
[0024] In some example embodiments, the pair of teeth 112 may extend at an angle , as shown in
[0025] As may be seen from the above, a fastener may be a one-piece measuring and marking tool that includes a pin and a clip. The fastener may be advantageous when a user is operating alone and may provide secure hold of the chalk line in the middle of the material. In particular, the fastener may advantageously not require additional components, such as nails or fasteners, and may be easily secured to constructive material. The fastener being a single piece that includes a pin and a clip advantageously allows a user to avoid additional components to secure the fastener, whereby increasing worksite efficiency and reducing costs. Further, the pin and clip built directly into the fastener may provide advantageous robustness for long term use of the fastener.
[0026] This written description uses examples to disclose the invention, including the best mode, and also to enable any person skilled in the art to practice the invention, including making and using any devices or systems and performing any incorporated methods. The patentable scope of the invention is defined by the claims, and may include other examples that occur to those skilled in the art. Such other examples are intended to be within the scope of the claims if they include structural elements that do not differ from the literal language of the claims or if they include equivalent structural elements with insubstantial differences from the literal language of the claims.
