Abstract
Embodiments of the present disclosure describe a spindle for a recreational vehicle, such as a snowmobile, an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), or a side-by-side vehicle. The spindle includes a spine, optionally a front fin that extends from a front surface of the spine, and optionally a rear fin that extends from a back surface of the spine.
Claims
1. A snowmobile, comprising: a frame extending in a longitudinal direction from a rear frame portion to a forward frame portion; an engine coupled to the frame, the engine including a crankshaft having a crankshaft axis of rotation; a steering assembly including a steering column rotatably coupled to the frame in communication with a spindle, the spindle including a base having a ski mount; and a ski coupled to the ski mount of the spindle, wherein a first longitudinal distance between an uppermost point of the steering column and the crankshaft axis of rotation is between 30% and 44% of a second longitudinal distance between the uppermost point of the steering column and the ski mount.
2. The snowmobile of claim 1, further comprising: a track drive shaft in mechanical communication with the engine, the track drive shaft having a track drive axis of rotation, wherein a third longitudinal distance between the uppermost point of the steering column and the track drive axis of rotation is between 26% and 39% of the second longitudinal distance.
3. The snowmobile of claim 1, wherein the crankshaft axis of rotation has a first height relative to a ground plane and the track drive axis of rotation has a second height relative to the ground plane, wherein the second height is between 65% and 101% of the first height.
4. The snowmobile of claim 3, wherein the second height is between 75% and 85% of the first height.
5. The snowmobile of claim 1, wherein a bottommost point of the steering column extends longitudinally forward of at least a portion of the spindle.
6. The snowmobile of claim 5, wherein the bottommost point of the steering column is longitudinally positioned between an upper control arm mount of the spindle and the ski mount of the spindle.
7. The snowmobile of claim 1, further comprising: a top drive sprocket and a bottom drive sprocket in mechanical communication with the engine, the bottom drive sprocket configured to rotate about a track drive axis of rotation, wherein a centerpoint of the top drive sprocket is positioned rearward of the uppermost point of the steering column.
8. A snow vehicle, comprising: a frame including a tunnel; a ski coupled to the frame via a spindle; an engine coupled to the frame, the engine including a crankshaft having a crankshaft axis of rotation; track drive shaft coupled to the engine, the track drive shaft having a track drive axis of rotation; and a rear skid-frame assembly including a front idler wheel, a rear idler wheel, and a rear suspension arm, wherein the rear suspension arm is secured to the rear skid-frame at a skid-frame attachment point and secured to the tunnel at a tunnel attachment point, wherein a first longitudinal distance between the tunnel attachment point and the crankshaft axis of rotation is between 72% and 108% of a second longitudinal distance between the skid-frame attachment point and the track drive axis of rotation.
9. The snow vehicle of claim 8, wherein a third longitudinal distance between the skid-frame attachment point and the tunnel attachment point is between 58% and 87% of the second longitudinal distance.
10. The snow vehicle of claim 9, wherein the first longitudinal distance is greater than the third longitudinal distance.
11. The snow vehicle of claim 8, wherein a first height differential between the skid-frame attachment point and the track drive axis of rotation is between 15% and 30% of the second longitudinal distance.
12. The snow vehicle of claim 8, wherein the rear skid-frame assembly includes an upper idler wheel coupled to the frame at a rear attachment point, wherein a second height differential between the skid-frame attachment point and the rear attachment point is between 25% and 40% of the second longitudinal distance.
13. The snow vehicle of claim 8, further comprising: a top drive sprocket and a bottom drive sprocket in mechanical communication with the engine, the bottom drive sprocket configured to rotate about a track drive axis of rotation, wherein the top drive sprocket and the bottom drive sprocket are longitudinally disposed between the tunnel attachment point and the crankshaft axis of rotation.
14. The snow vehicle of claim 13, further comprising a steering assembly including a steering column, wherein the top drive sprocket and the bottom drive sprocket are longitudinally disposed between the tunnel attachment point and the steering column.
15. The snow vehicle of claim 8, wherein the tunnel attachment point is positioned at a first height relative to a ground plane and wherein the track drive axis of rotation is positioned at a second height relative to the ground plane, wherein the first height is greater than the second height.
16. The snow vehicle of claim 15, wherein the crankshaft axis of rotation is positioned at a third height relative to the ground plane, wherein the third height is greater than a first height.
17. A snowmobile, comprising: a frame including a forward frame assembly and a tunnel; an engine coupled to the forward frame assembly, the engine including a crankshaft having a crankshaft axis of rotation; a belt drive assembly coupled to the frame, the belt drive assembly including a top drive sprocket and a bottom drive sprocket in mechanical communication with the engine, the bottom drive sprocket configured to rotate about a track drive axis of rotation; a steering assembly including a steering column coupled to the forward frame assembly in communication with a spindle, the spindle including: a base having a ski mount, an upper control arm mount coupled to one or more upper control arms of the forward frame assembly, a lower control arm mount coupled to one or more lower control arms of the forward frame assembly; and a ski coupled to the ski mount of the spindle, wherein the crankshaft axis of rotation is vertically disposed between the upper control arm mount and the lower control arm mount of the spindle.
18. The snowmobile of claim 17, wherein the track drive axis of rotation is vertically disposed between the upper control arm mount and the lower control arm mount of the spindle.
19. The snowmobile of claim 17, wherein a bottommost point of the steering column is vertically disposed between the upper control arm mount and the lower control arm mount of the spindle.
20. The snowmobile of claim 17, further comprising: a rear skid-frame assembly including a front idler wheel, a rear idler wheel, and a rear suspension arm, wherein the rear suspension arm is secured to the tunnel at a tunnel attachment point, wherein the tunnel attachment point is vertically disposed between the upper control arm mount and the lower control arm mount of the spindle.

[0059] Embodiments of the present disclosure describe a spindle, a suspension system including one or more spindles, and recreational vehicles utilizing a suspension system including one or more spindles. Although discussion herein is directed to the use of the spindle in a snowmobile, a spindle as disclosed herein may also be used in four-wheelers such as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and side-by-side vehicles (SxS or UTVs).
