Abstract
An actuator for a metered-dose inhaler is provided. The actuator comprises a body for receiving a canister and a metering valve, and a mouthpiece through which aerosolised canister content can be dispensed.
Claims
1. An actuator for a metered-dose inhaler, the actuator comprising a body for receiving a canister and a metering valve, and a mouthpiece through which aerosolised canister content can be dispensed, the body comprises a support block which comprises a metering valve stem receptacle and a sump which leads, via a nozzle bore, to a funnel-shape nozzle opening leading to the mouthpiece, the sump has a generally triangular cross section, with a proximal end of an inclined face extending immediately adjacent the receptacle and from which the nozzle bore extends generally centrally and towards, but not at, a distal end of the inclined face.
2. The actuator of claim 1, in which the axis of the nozzle bore is generally perpendicular to the inclined face.
3. The actuator of claim 1, providing a sump volume of approximately 12.6 mm.sup.3.
4. The actuator of claim 1, providing a sump volume of approximately 20.2 mm.sup.3.
5. The actuator of claim 1, providing a sump volume of approximately 12.7 mm.sup.3.
6. The actuator of claim 1, providing a sump volume of approximately 15.3 mm.sup.3.
7. The actuator of claim 1, in which a dimension measured from the top of the support block to the bottom of the sump is between 1.80 mm and 2.20 mm.
8. The actuator of claim 7, in which the dimension is 1.8 mm±0.05 mm.
9. The actuator of claim 7, in which the dimension is 2.20 mm±0.05 mm.
10. The actuator of claim 7, in which the dimension is 1.95 mm±0.05 mm.
11. The actuator of claim 1, in which a dimension measured as the diameter or width at the mouth of the sump is between 8.25 mm and 9.70 mm.
12. The actuator of claim 11, in which the dimension is 9.70 mm±0.20 mm.
13. The actuator of claim 11, in which the dimension is 8.25 mm±0.20 mm.
14. The actuator of claim 1, in which the sump has a generally wedge-shape section.
15. The actuator of claim 1, in which the sump is open at one end and closed at the other end by a curved apex.
16. The actuator of claim 15, in which the nozzle bore extends laterally centrally from the inclined face.
17. The actuator of claim 1, in which the inclined face is generally rectangular.
18. A support block for the inhaler of claim 1.
19. A metered-dose inhaler comprising the actuator of claim 1.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0054] The present disclosure will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[0055] Example embodiments are shown and described in sufficient detail to enable those of ordinary skill in the art to embody and implement the systems and processes herein described. It is important to understand that embodiments can be provided in many alternate forms and should not be construed as limited to the examples set forth herein. Drawings are drawn to scale.
[0056]
[0057] The inhaler (10) comprises a body (15) for receiving a canister (not shown) and a metering valve (20), and a mouthpiece (25) through which aerosolised canister content can be dispensed.
[0058] The body comprises a support block (30) which comprises a metering valve stem receptacle (35) and a sump (40) which leads, via a nozzle bore (45), to a funnel-shape nozzle (50) opening leading to the mouthpiece. In some embodiments the stem receptacle is considered to form part of the sump for the purposes of calculating the sump volume.
[0059] The sump (40) has a generally wedge-shape, triangular (e.g. isosceles or scalene) cross-section with a curved apex (41) and open at its other end, and with a proximal end of an inclined face (42) extending immediately adjacent the receptacle and from which the nozzle bore extends generally centrally and towards, but not at, a distal end of the inclined face. The axis (X) of the nozzle bore (45) is generally perpendicular to the inclined face (42).

[0061]
[0062] The dimensions marked in red may vary.
[0063] The dimension for reference numeral 22 may be between 1.80 mm and 2.20 mm. This dimension may be measured from the “top” of the support block to the “bottom” of the sump.
[0064] The dimension for reference numeral 24 may be between 8.25 mm and 9.70 mm. This dimension may be measured as the diameter/width at the mouth of the sump.
