Abstract
A drilling apparatus used in the process of marinating a vegetable such as corn on the cob is provided. A rigid sleeve is slidably attached to the shank of a drill bit. The sleeve is resiliently biased toward a cutting head at one end of the shank. An end of an ear of corn is inserted into the sleeve and a hole is drilled in the corn cob as the shank slides through an opening in the sleeve into the corn cob. The sleeve keeps the drill bit aligned with the corn cob and protects the user's hand. Once the hole is drilled, a marinade is injected into the hole and a small dowel is used to plug the hole. The corn is then allowed to marinate before cooking. The marinade penetrates the corn cob and infuses an improved flavor in the kernels of corn.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0024] In the Summary above and in this Detailed Description, and the claims below, and in the accompanying drawings, reference is made to particular features, including method steps, of the invention. It is to be understood that the disclosure of the invention in this specification includes all possible combinations of such particular features. For example, where a particular feature is disclosed in the context of a particular aspect or embodiment of the invention, or a particular claim, that feature can also be used, to the extent possible, in combination with/or in the context of other particular aspects of the embodiments of the invention, and in the invention generally.
[0025] The term comprises and grammatical equivalents thereof are used herein to mean that other components, ingredients, steps, etc. are optionally present. For example, an article comprising components A, B, and C can contain only components A, B, and C, or can contain not only components A, B, and C, but also one or more other components.
[0026] Where reference is made herein to a method comprising two or more defined steps, the defined steps can be carried out in any order or simultaneously (except where the context excludes that possibility), and the method can include one or more other steps which are carried out before any of the defined steps, between two of the defined steps, or after all the defined steps (except where the context excludes that possibility).
[0027] A preferred embodiment of the invention is directed to a drilling apparatus configured for drilling a hole in a vegetable so that a marinade can be injected into the hole. The apparatus is particularly advantageous when used to drill a hole in the cob of an ear of corn on the cob, though it may be utilized with other vegetables. The device is particularly suitable for use with various types of elongated vegetables, including, but not limited to, cucumbers, zucchini, potatoes, carrots, squash, and radishes. When used with corn on the cob, the injected marinade penetrates the corn cob internally and infuses an improved flavor in the kernels of corn attached to the cob. The hole is drill longitudinally along a substantial portion of the length of the cob to effectively distribute marinade throughout the ear of corn. Any desired type of marinade may be utilized. Marinades typically contain various herbs and spices, though the term marinade, as used herein, may include any type of edible, liquefied food substance, including substances such as melted cheese, which may not contain herbs or spices.
