Abstract
The invention provides a carrier adapted to be fixed to the face of a grid tee, such as by screws, with spaced depending flanges that are formed with panel supporting hooks. The hooks are configured to support a variety of panel cross-sections and provide a strong coupling with complementarily shaped panel flanges.
Claims
1. A U-shaped metal carrier adapted to be attached to the underside face of a grid tee, the carrier having transversely spaced longitudinally extending legs that depend from the grid tee when installed thereon, the legs each being formed with regularly spaced identical projections along their full lengths, the projections of one leg being transversely aligned with the projections of the other leg, each projection being symmetrical when viewed from a side of the carrier, an end of a projection remote from the leg being formed with oppositely extending hooks having free ends, each hook having an upper surface that is inclined downwardly in a direction towards a center line of the projection, the longitudinal spacing of the free ends of adjacent hooks of adjacent projections being greater than the longitudinal spacing of the free ends of a projection.
2. An elongated sheet metal panel mounted on the carrier of claim 1, the panel having a cross-section including a central portion and flanges along each longitudinal edge of the central portion, the flanges extending away from the central portion in the same direction, distal longitudinal edges of the flanges each having a lip, a lip of one flange extending towards a lip of the other flange, the flanges and lips being configured and arranged to contact an associated free end and upper surface of a hook.
3. In combination, a carrier and a pair of non-reveal panels carried by the carrier, longitudinal edges of the panels abutting each other below a pair of oppositely extending hooks of a depending projection of the carrier, the panels having upstanding flanges with outturned lips, lips of each panel engaged with an associated hook, an imaginary unobstructed straight line exiting between a line of contact between the panels and a distal part of a flange adjacent a juncture with its associated lip, whereby the flange can be removed with a flat tool inserted between the line of contact between panels.
4. In combination, a carrier and a pair of reveal panels carried by the carrier, and an insert disposed between the reveal panels, associated edges of the panels and the insert sharing a depending hook of the carrier, the edges of the insert overlying the edges of the panels, the insert being elastically deformable upon application of a force of a flat tool against an edge of the insert to remove or install the insert from below the panels.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0009] Referring to
[0010] Projections 17 from the flanges 13 are all identical and those of one flange are transversely aligned with those of the other flange. The projections 17 are regularly longitudinally spaced on nominal 2 inch centers. At their free ends, the projections 17 have oppositely extending hooks 18 with downwardly inclined upper surfaces 19 that are farther from the flange 13 the closer to the projection. The distance across the tips of the hooks 18 of a projection 17 being less than the distance between adjacent hook tips of adjacent projections.
[0011] The carrier 10 is completely non-directional and is compatible with a wide variety of panel cross-sections of differing depth and width and a typical length of, for example, 12 feet. Referring to
