DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0016] In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a more thorough description of the present invention. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art, that the present invention may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known features have not been described in detail so as not to obscure the invention.
[0017] As employed herein, the term coupled shall mean connected together either directly or via one or more intermediate parts or components. As employed herein, the term number shall mean one or an integer greater than one (i.e., a plurality).
[0018] Aspects of the invention comprise a crimping tool, such as for crimping at least two members, such as fittings, together and confirming that the crimp is acceptable. In one embodiment, the crimping tool has jaws which are configured to removably receive different crimping heads or inserts (such as for crimping fittings of different sizes). In one embodiment, the crimping tool includes a means for selectively controlling the crimping force, such as by an adjustable cam member which is associated with a pivot connection of handles of the tool. In another embodiment, the crimping tool includes means for removably associating one or more fitting gauges, such as GO/NO-GO gauges, with the jaws of the tool. These different features may be used independently or, in a preferred embodiment, conjunctively with the tool.
[0019]
[0020] Additionally, the first and second handle elements 11, 13 may be pivotally coupled together via an adjustable central cam-bolt apparatus 20. More specifically, the first handle element 11 may include a male connection component 14, the second handle element 13 may include a female connection component 16, and the cam-bolt apparatus 20, as shown in
[0021] Continuing to refer to
[0022] Additionally, it will be appreciated that the first and second jaws 30, 32 are configured to also be coupled to or receive other tool heads 42, 44, 46, 48 by de-coupling the first and second tool heads 34, 36 via the coupling members 38, 40. In this manner, the other tool heads 42, 44, 46, 48, which define second diameters (e.g., via the members 42, 44) and third diameters (e.g., via the members 46, 48) provide the crimping tool 2 with the ability to produce three different diameter crimps. It will also be appreciated that other tool heads (not shown) having fourth, fifth, and sixth different diameters may also be coupled to the first and second jaws 30, 32 to allow for even further variability in terms of fittings which may be crimped by the crimping tool 2. In one embodiment, the coupling members 38,40 are biased pins and the heads or inserts 34,36 each define a slot at a peripheral portion thereof for accepting a corresponding one of the pins. In such a configuration, the user may pull the pin outwardly to remove and replace the head or insert 34,36 and then release the pin so that the biasing force thereon (such as created by a spring) presses the pin into engagement therewith to maintain the head or insert 34,36 to the corresponding jaw 30,32.
[0023] Additionally, as shown, the first and second handle elements 11, 13 are each configured to be coupled, preferably rotatably, to a corresponding one of the first and second jaws 30, 32 via corresponding coupling members 50, 52, which may be bolts and nuts, rivets, or other suitable fasteners. In this manner, during use, once the first and second jaws 30, 32 are secured to a fitting, movement of the first and second handle elements 11, 13 toward each other allow a suitable crimp to be made to the fitting.
[0024] In accordance with the disclosed concept, the crimping tool 2 also includes a convenient and reliable mechanism by which crimped fittings can be assessed and/or tested for proper use in the field. More specifically, and referring to
[0025] Each of the gauges 100, 102, as shown in
[0026] In accordance with the disclosed concept, the gauges 100, 102 are advantageously configured to be removably coupled to the insert assembly 60, which is associated with/defined by the first and second jaws 30, 32. In this manner, after a user has crimped a fitting (e.g., via the tool heads 34, 36, 42, 44, 46, 48), accessing either or both of the gauges 100, 102 is relatively simple, in that all the user has to do is remove the gauge(s) from the insert assembly 60, which is conveniently located at the sides or faces of the first and second jaws 30, 32.
[0027] Coupling of the insert assembly 60 to the first and second jaws 30, 32, and coupling of the gauges 100, 102 to the insert assembly 60 will now be described in detail. Referring again to
[0028] Referring to
[0029] Additionally, the second mounting member 68, in one example, may be directly mounted to and engage each of the first and second jaws 30, 32. The fourth mounting member 72 may be spaced from the second mounting member 68, and the third mounting member 70 may be located between and engage each of the second and fourth mounting members 68,72 in a manner wherein engaging surfaces are parallel to one another (e.g., are flush with respect to each other). Further, the first mounting member 62 may be located parallel to the third and fourth mounting members 70, 72. It will be appreciated that the first mounting member 62 (
[0030] In order to appreciate the removable coupling of the gauges 100, 102 with respect to the rest of the crimping tool 2, reference will be made to
[0031] Furthermore, as shown in
[0032] Accordingly, the disclosed concept provides for a convenient and reliable mechanism by which the gauges 100, 102 can be easily accessed (e.g., are located and stored right where the user's hands will be during a crimping operation such that immediately after crimping a fitting, the user can move his or her hand a de minimis amount to locate and retrieve the gauges 100, 102), used to assess whether a crimping on a fitting is a GO (e.g., is suitable for use) or is a NO-GO (e.g., requires further crimping by the crimping tool or has been crimped too much), and then returned to their storage place in the insert assembly 60. In this manner, the insert assembly 60 is uniquely engineered to accommodate the geometry of the E-shaped gauges 100, 102. Stated differently, the receiving portions 80, 82 and the detent 105, 111/groove connection together operate to reliably and removably maintain the gauges 100, 102 on the insert assembly 60 of the crimping tool 2.
[0033] Additionally, although the disclosed concept has been described in association with the elongated portions 104, 110 having the detents 105, 111, it will be appreciated that a suitable alternative crimping tool may employ elongated portions of gauges having grooves which mate with detents of mounting members of insert assemblies (e.g., a reverse arrangement), without departing from the scope of the disclosed concept. Other arrangements are also contemplated by the disclosed concept for removably mounting one or more gauges to the jaws (such as one or both jaws, and at either face thereof, or even at or into the sides thereof). For example, magnetic attractive forces may be employed to couple gauges to insert assemblies, or directly to first and second jaws. Moreover, the elongated portions 104, 110 may engage and removably couple to any of the mounting members 68, 70, 72, without departing from the scope of the disclosed concept. In some embodiments, slots might be formed in the peripheral side of one or both jaws for removably receiving a gauge, etc.
[0034] In one example embodiment of the disclosed concept, a method of operating the crimping tool 2 includes locating at least two members (e.g., a fitting and a pipe) between the first and second jaws 30, 32, moving the first and second handle elements 11, 13 with respect to each other in order to move the first and second jaws 30, 32 from the open position to the closed position, thereby crimping the two members, applying at least a predetermined force to the gauge 100, 102 in order to de-couple it from a corresponding one of the mounting members 68, 70, 72, and re-coupling the gauge 100, 102 to a corresponding one of the mounting members 68, 70, 72 in a snap-action manner. The method may also include rotating the head 26 of the cam 22 with respect to the first and second handle elements 11, 13, thereby allowing a crimping force applied by the first and second jaws 30, 32 to be varied. Advantageously, the gauges 100,102 can be accessed by a user while they are gripping the handles 11, 13 with one hand, such as by using their other hand to access the gauge(s). This allows the user to continue to hold and/or operate the tool 2 while accessing the gauge(s).
[0035] While various embodiments of the disclosed concept have been described, it will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art that many more embodiments and implementations are possible that are within the scope of this disclosed concept. In addition, the various features, elements and embodiments described herein may be claimed or combined in any combination or arrangement.
