5. The device of claim 1 in which the plurality of shaped projections include a shape chosen from the group consisting of: a triangle shape, a curved shape, a square shape, a notch shape, a cylindrical shape with rounded ends, and cylindrical shape with flat ends.
6. The device of claim 1 in which the plurality of shaped projections radially extend from the overlay at the same angle.
7. The device of claim 1 in which the plurality of shaped projections radially extend from the overlay at different angles.
8. The device of claim 1 in which the plurality of shaped projections longitudinally extend over a length of the overlay.
9. The device of claim 8 in which the plurality of shaped projections are configured in a wave pattern.
10. The device of claim 8 in which the plurality of shaped projections are configured in a Z pattern.
11. The device of claim 8 in which the plurality of shaped projections are configured in a helical pattern.
12. The device of claim 1 in which the plurality of shaped projections are individually spaced in a predetermined pattern on the overlay.
13. The device of claim 12 in which the predetermined pattern includes an aligned pattern of the plurality of shaped projections.
14. The device of claim 12 in which the predetermined pattern includes an offset pattern of the plurality of shaped projections.
15. The device of claim 1 in which the cylindrically shaped core material is pliable.
16. The device of claim 1 in which the overlay material is pliable.
17. The device of claim 15 in which the pliable material is the closed-cell foam material.
18. The device of claim 16 in which the pliable material is the closed-cell foam material.
19. The device of claim 17 in which the closed-cell foam material includes a chemically cross-linked polyethylene foam.
20. The device of claim 18 in which the closed-cell foam material includes a chemically cross-linked polyethylene foam.
21. The device of claim 1 in which the material of the overlay is an extruded material.
22. The device of claim 1 in which the material of the overlay is a die cast.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
(13) Aside from the preferred embodiment or embodiments disclosed below, this invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or being carried out in various ways. Thus, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and the arrangements of components set forth in the following description or illustrated in the drawings. If only one embodiment is described herein, the claims hereof are not to be limited to that embodiment. Moreover, the claims hereof are not to be read restrictively unless there is clear and convincing evidence manifesting a certain exclusion, restriction, or disclaimer.
(14) There is shown in
(15) In other designs, the plurality of shaped projections 14 may have triangle-shaped, as shown in
(16) The plurality of shaped projections 14 as shown in
(17) Preferably, each of the plurality of shaped projections 14 is configured to maximize mobilization of soft tissue to enhance flexibility and/or optimize soft tissue distensibility.
(18) The result is therapeutic fitness and sports enhancement device 10 with cylindrically shaped body 12 having the plurality of shaped projections 14 of this invention effectively mobilizes target soft tissue. Typical target soft tissue mobilized by the plurality of shaped projections 14 includes muscles, tendons, ligaments fascia of the human body and the like. Mobilization of soft tissue by the plurality of shaped projections 14 massages soft tissue and breaks up scar tissue. This increases flexibility of soft tissue, decreases muscle soreness, relieves joint stress, decreases neuromuscular hypertonicity, increases joint range motion and extensibility of musculotendonous junctions, optimizes soft tissue distensibility, increases neuromuscular efficiency, and helps maintain normal functional muscle length. These benefits enhance recovery of injuries when used as a therapeutic tool, maximize sports performance, and improved fitness.
(19) Therapeutic fitness and sports enhancement device 10 with cylindrically shaped core 12 and the plurality of shaped projections 14 also effectively provide for body core strength and balance training. This is because the plurality of shaped projections 14 reduces movement of device 10 which help prevent the user from falling off device 10 when performing body core strength and balance training exercises.
(20) In one embodiment, cylindrically shaped body 12 and the plurality of shaped projections 14,
(21) In another embodiment, cylindrically shaped body 12,
(22) Typically, cylindrically shaped body 12 has a diameter, d-27,
(23) Each of the plurality of shaped projections 14,
(24) In addition to the shape of the plurality of shaped projections 14, the density of the pliable material for body 12 and the plurality of shaped projections 14 may be chosen to maximize soft tissue mobilization, improve body core and strength training, enhance flexibility, and/or optimize soft tissue distensibility. In one example, the density of the pliable material, e.g., a closed-cell polyethylene foam such as MINICEL L200, L300 or L380, is in the range about 2.0 to 3.8 lb/ft.sup.3.
(25) In yet another embodiment, therapeutic, fitness, and sports enhancement device 10,
(26) In one example, the plurality of projections on overlay 13,
(27) Although specific features of the invention are shown in some drawings and not in others, this is for convenience only as each feature may be combined with any or all of the other features in accordance with the invention. The words including, comprising, having, and with as used herein are to be interpreted broadly and comprehensively and are not limited to any physical interconnection. Moreover, any embodiments disclosed in the subject application are not to be taken as the only possible embodiments. Other embodiments will occur to those skilled in the art and are within the following claims.
(28) In addition, any amendment presented during the prosecution of the patent application for this patent is not a disclaimer of any claim element presented in the application as filed: those skilled in the art cannot reasonably be expected to draft a claim that would literally encompass all possible equivalents, many equivalents will be unforeseeable at the time of the amendment and are beyond a fair interpretation of what is to be surrendered (if anything), the rationale underlying the amendment may bear no more than a tangential relation to many equivalents, and/or there are many other reasons the applicant can not be expected to describe certain insubstantial substitutes for any claim element amended.
