Abstract
A device for removing a scored portion of a lid from a food can. The device includes a circular disk having a disk edge and a tab slot for engaging a lid tab disposed on the lid when the lid tab is in an extended position and a cylindrical wall extending perpendicular from the disk edge, the cylindrical wall for engaging a food can rim. The device included a wedge disposed on a portion of the circular disk along the cylindrical wall, the wedge for rotating a lid tab distal end away from a scored portion of lid of a food can and a magnet for removably securing the scored lid to the circular disk. The wedge may be integrated with the cylindrical wall. The circular disk has a perimeter extending beyond the cylindrical wall.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0058] While various aspects and features of certain embodiments have been summarized above, the following detailed description illustrates a few exemplary embodiments in further detail to enable one skilled in the art to practice such embodiments. The described examples are provided for illustrative purposes and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention.
[0059] In the following description, for the purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the described embodiments. It will be apparent to one skilled in the art however that other embodiments of the present invention may be practiced without some of these specific details. Several embodiments are described herein, and while various features are ascribed to different embodiments, it should be appreciated that the features described with respect to one embodiment may be incorporated with other embodiments as well. By the same token however, no single feature or features of any described embodiment should be considered essential to every embodiment of the invention, as other embodiments of the invention may omit such features.
[0060] In this application the use of the singular includes the plural unless specifically stated otherwise and use of the terms and and or is equivalent to and/or, also referred to as non-exclusive or unless otherwise indicated. Moreover, the use of the term including, as well as other forms, such as includes and included, should be considered non-exclusive. Also, terms such as element or component encompass both elements and components including one unit and elements and components that include more than one unit, unless specifically stated otherwise.
[0061] Lastly, the terms or and and/or as used herein are to be interpreted as inclusive or meaning any one or any combination. Therefore, A, B or C or A, B and/or C mean any of the following: A; B; C; A and B; A and C; B and C; A, B and C. An exception to this definition will occur only when a combination of elements, functions, steps or acts are in some way inherently mutually exclusive.
[0062] As this invention is susceptible to embodiments of many different forms, it is intended that the present disclosure be considered as an example of the principles of the invention and not intended to limit the invention to the specific embodiments shown and described.
[0063] The device has a ramp portion along the bottom circumferential wall to help lift the
[0064] tab upwards so that the user can more easily move the tab to a vertical position. The user slides the device's lifting portion which is about two inches wide and currently metal but could be strong silicone or plastic that is edged under the pull tab. The user then lifts the device up.
[0065] The device can also be tilted back on an angle, which is intuitive. This will distance the tab from the surface of the can.
[0066] Next, the user turns the device over and threads the pull tab through the device slit opening. Effectively, this is a lid over lid concept. The device will click right onto most pull tab lids as the embedded magnet engages. The user proceeds to pull the lid off as usual. The lid stays contained within the device and easily disengages when the user pushes back down on the threaded tab. The lid will fluidly drop from the magnetized position into a sink or receptacle. The addition of magnets, a suction mechanism, or other lid securing mechanisms could be incorporated.
[0067] There is a bumper around the perimeter of the device for leverage. This offers a sturdier edge when lifting the pull tab up and gives the user greater grip overall. The device to be manufactured from a very rigid silicone that has some slight give. It should be dishwasher safe. The magnet is centered and embedded in the silicone. The magnet may be a single disk if it's strong enough or multiple magnets. It's possible the magnet could have some depth and create a slight bump on the inner side.
[0068] The lifting feature is optional to use. Some may have an easier time getting the pull tab started on their own and not need to use this feature. The lifting feature is for individuals who currently rely on butter knives or screwdrivers to lift the pull tab or who struggle with this initial step and for those who want an all-in-one tool. The device is effective even when there are ridges on the can. The device works best with circular lids and are made of steel rather than aluminum, but even with aluminum lids the device still works to protect the hand but may not fully magnetize to the lid. The majority of consumer cans have steel lids.
[0069] The device serves as a protective guard during the lift and pull process. The device makes removing a lid a safer process so that the sharp edges of a pull tab top do not graze or injure the hand. The device helps the user to feel more confident pulling past the point of resistance. The device keeps the hands clean. The device serves as a barrier to the food can, the food can contents and the scored portion of the food can lid. Although the lifting of the tab beaks the seal and allows a ring to be accessible to grab and pull, there is still a second breaking resistance to go beyond the point of the seal breakage. The second breaking resistance requires additional pulling force and, without the device, makes the user weary of pulling the tab. The device provides confidence for a user to pull past the point of resistance, which is often where a lid gets stuck.

[0073]
[0074] In another embodiment shown in
[0075] The slot may be in the shape of a coin slot, an ellipsis, a square, rectangle and or/any shape that accepts pull-tabs. The slit can be of a range of dimensions in its opening.
[0076] The wedge has a front edge of one thickness and a thicker back edge so the wedge has a slope that tapers from thin front edge to back edge. This slope can have any increasing durometer measurement that facilitates and results in lifting of the pull tab.
[0077] The magnet may be fully molded in or somewhat exposed. The lid material may be plastic, nylon, silicone, rubber or any combination thereof. And is preferably a food safe material.

[0082] The scored lid remover may include any combination of features described. The number of wedges, magnets and tab slots may also be of any combination. The configuration of the wedges, magnets and tab slots may also be of any combination. The cylindrical wall may be rounded at the top rim, may be square at the top rim, or may have any symmetrical or asymmetrical contour.
[0083] Another aspect of the invention as shown in
[0084] Another aspect of the invention is directed to a method of using the device. The method includes sliding a narrow portion of the wedge under the tab of the food can and rotating the device about a lid connection of the tab until a seal breaks between a scored portion of the lid and surrounding portion of the lid. The method includes engaging the tab slot of the device with the tab of the food can wherein the circular disk covers the scored lid, pulling the tab until the lid is removed from the food can and removing the scored lid from the scored lid removing device.
[0085] Another aspect of the invention as shown in
[0086] Since many modifications, variations, and changes in detail can be made to the described embodiments of the invention, it is intended that all matters in the foregoing description and shown in the accompanying drawings be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Furthermore, it is understood that any of the features presented in the embodiments may be integrated into any of the other embodiments unless explicitly stated otherwise. The scope of the invention should be determined by the appended claims and their legal equivalents.
[0087] In addition, the present invention has been described with reference to embodiments, it should be noted and understood that various modifications and variations can be crafted by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. Accordingly, the foregoing disclosure should be interpreted as illustrative only and is not to be interpreted in a limiting sense. Further it is intended that any other embodiments of the present invention that result from any changes in application or method of use or operation, method of manufacture, shape, size, or materials which are not specified within the detailed written description or illustrations contained herein are considered within the scope of the present invention.
[0088] Insofar as the description above and the accompanying drawings disclose any additional subject matter that is not within the scope of the claims below, the inventions are not dedicated to the public and the right to file one or more applications to claim such additional inventions is reserved.
[0089] Although very narrow claims are presented herein, it should be recognized that the scope of this invention is much broader than presented by the claim. It is intended that broader claims will be submitted in an application that claims the benefit of priority from this application.
