Abstract
An article movement system includes an article and at least one ball wheel. The article has first and second article surfaces meeting at a first article edge. The ball wheel is located along the first article edge and includes a ball, a bearing arrangement and a shell. The ball engages a surface underlying the article, the bearing arrangement supports the ball for omni-directional rotational movement, and the shell is located along the first article edge and contains the ball and the bearing arrangement. The shell defines a non-circular ball opening through which a portion of the ball extends to contact the underlying surface. The article, the bearing arrangement and the shell are configured such that the ball wheel is able to support the article for omni-directional rolling motion over the underlying surface with either of the first and article surfaces parallel thereto, and at any orientation therebetween.
Claims
1. A ball wheel assembly for an article movement system, comprising: a shell defining a non-circular ball opening; a ball wheel supported within the shell such that a portion of the ball wheel extends through the non-circular ball opening to engage a surface; and a bearing arrangement that engages an interior of the shell and ball wheel, said bearing arrangement comprising a plurality of micro-casters, wherein at least one micro-caster is oriented such that one or more quadrants of the ball engage at least one micro-caster.
2. The ball wheel assembly of claim 1, wherein the non-circular ball opening has a major angular extent and minor angular extent, the major angular extent being greater than the minor angular extent.

The ball wheel assembly of claim 1, wherein the plurality of micro-casters includes an outer housing mounted to the shell, and inner housing rotatably mounted within the outer housing, and a caster wheel rotatably mounted in the inner housing such that a rotational axis of the caster wheel extends at a right angle to, but does not intersect a rotational axis of the inner housing.
4. The ball wheel assembly of claim 1, wherein the bearing arrangement comprises a plurality of ball bearings.
5. The ball wheel assembly of claim 4, wherein the bearing arrangement includes a bearing well defined in the shell, wherein the plurality of the ball bearings are free to circulate therethrough.
6. The ball wheel assembly of claim 1, wherein said shell includes an upwardly extending neck configured to connect to an article to be supported by the ball wheel assembly for rolling along a surface; and at least one of a suspension unit and a brake unit engaging the neck.
7. The ball wheel assembly of claim 6, wherein said suspension unit comprises a portion arranged around the neck and configured to absorb shocks experienced by the ball as it passes over the underlying surface.
8. The ball wheel assembly of claim 6, wherein said neck includes an internal passage extending therethrough, said brake unit contained therein and operable to exert a braking force on the ball wheel.
9. The ball wheel assembly of claim 1, wherein each micro-caster includes a caster support rotatably secured onto the shell and configured to orient at least one micro-caster at a right angle to a rotational axis of the caster support.
10. A ball wheel assembly for an article movement system, comprising: a shell defining a non-circular ball opening; a ball wheel supported within the shell such that a portion of the ball wheel extends through the non-circular ball opening to engage a surface; a bearing arrangement that engages an interior of the shell and ball wheel; said shell including an upwardly extending neck configured to connect to an article to be supported by the ball wheel assembly for rolling along a surface; and at least one of a suspension unit and brake unit engaging the neck.
11. The ball wheel assembly of claim 10, wherein said suspension unit comprises a portion arranged around the neck and configured to absorb shocks experienced by the ball as it passes over the underlying surface.
12. The ball wheel assembly of claim 10, wherein said neck includes an internal passage extending therethrough and said brake unit contained therein and operable to exert a braking force on the ball wheel.
13. The ball wheel assembly of claim 10, wherein said bearing arrangement comprising a plurality of micro-casters and one or more quadrants of the ball engage at least one micro-caster.
14. The ball wheel assembly of claim 10, wherein the non-circular ball opening has a major angular extent and minor angular extent, the major angular extent being greater than the minor angular extent.
15. The ball wheel assembly of claim 10, wherein said bearing arrangement comprises a plurality of micro-casters.
16. The ball wheel assembly of claim 15, wherein at least one micro-caster includes a caster support rotatably secured onto the shell and configured to orient at least one micro-caster at a right angle to a rotational axis of the caster support.
17. The ball wheel assembly of claim 15, wherein at least one micro-caster includes an outer housing mounted to the shell, and inner housing rotatably mounted within the outer housing, and a caster wheel rotatably mounted in the inner housing such that a rotational axis of the caster wheel extends at a right angle to, but does not intersect a rotational axis of the inner housing.
18. The ball wheel assembly of claim 10, wherein the bearing arrangement comprises a plurality of ball bearings.
19. The ball wheel assembly of claim 18, wherein the bearing arrangement includes a bearing well defined in the shell, wherein the plurality of the ball bearings are free to circulate therethrough.
