Abstract
An agricultural residue chopper assembly comprising a housing defining a partially enclosed cutting chamber, with respective sections of housing wall extending between an inlet and outlet, a cutting knife assembly comprising a plurality of knives extending radially to define a cutting volume, a counterknife assembly comprising one or more counterknives positioned to extend into the cutting volume, a first shear bar positioned near a downstream closing of the housing outlet, a second shear bar positioned downstream of the first shear bar near an upstream opening of the housing inlet, and an air catch formed by a radially expanded section of the housing wall between the downstream closing of the housing outlet and the upstream opening of the housing inlet. Also, an agricultural harvester machine having a residue chopper assembly.
Claims
1. An agricultural residue chopper assembly comprising: a housing defining a partially enclosed cutting chamber, the housing comprising a housing inlet and a housing outlet with respective sections of housing wall extending between the inlet and outlet; a cutting knife assembly comprising a shaft mounted to rotate in a cutting direction within the cutting chamber about a cutting knife rotation axis extending along a longitudinal direction, the cutting knife assembly comprising a plurality of knives extending from the shaft at respective axial locations along the longitudinal direction, each of the plurality of knives extending from a respective proximal end at the shaft to a respective distal end at a radial distance from the shaft, the radial distance defining an outer radius of a cutting volume; a counterknife assembly comprising one or more counterknives mounted to a counterknife support, the counterknives positioned to extend into the cutting volume at a position, with reference to the cutting direction, downstream from the housing inlet; a first shear bar positioned near a downstream closing of the housing outlet; a second shear bar positioned downstream of the first shear bar near an upstream opening of the housing inlet; and an air catch formed by a radially expanded section of the housing wall between the downstream closing of the housing outlet and the upstream opening of the housing inlet.
2. The agricultural residue chopper assembly of claim 1, wherein the radially expanded section of the housing wall comprises an upstream section extending downstream from near the housing outlet closing to a middle section extending generally towards the opening of the housing inlet.

The agricultural residue chopper assembly of claim 2, wherein the radially expanded section of the housing wall comprises a downstream section extending from near the upstream opening of the housing inlet a distance generally outward from the cutting volume then curving arcuately upstream generally toward the middle section.

The agricultural residue chopper assembly of claim 3, wherein the upstream section of the radially expanded section of the housing wall is substantially concentric to an outer circumference of the cutting volume and the middle section expands tangentially from the substantially concentric upstream section.

The agricultural residue chopper assembly of claim 3, wherein the middle section of the radially expanded section of the housing wall joins the arcuately curved downstream section to form a continuous radially expanded section of housing wall between the downstream closing of the housing outlet and the upstream opening of the housing inlet.

The agricultural residue chopper assembly of claim 1, wherein the radially expanded section of the housing wall comprises an upstream section extending downstream from near the housing outlet closing to a middle section extending generally towards the opening of the housing inlet, wherein the upstream section of the radially expanded section of the housing wall is substantially concentric to an outer circumference of the cutting volume, and the middle section expands tangentially from the substantially concentric upstream section, wherein the radially expanded section of the housing wall further comprises a downstream section extending from near the upstream opening of the housing inlet a distance generally outward from the cutting volume then curving arcuately upstream generally toward the housing outlet, and wherein the middle section of the radially expanded section of the housing wall joins the arcuately curved downstream section to form a continuous radially expanded section of housing wall between the downstream closing of the housing outlet and the upstream opening of the housing inlet.

The agricultural residue chopper assembly of claim 1, wherein the radially expanded section of the housing wall comprises an upstream section extending downstream from near the housing outlet closing to a middle section extending generally towards the opening of the housing inlet, wherein the middle section of the radially expanded section of the housing wall ends before reaching a point intersecting a line extending substantially radially from the cutting knife rotation axis through the upstream opening of the housing inlet, wherein the radially expanded section of the housing wall comprises a downstream section extending from near the upstream opening of the housing inlet outward from the cutting volume, curving arcuately around the end of the middle section to form an opening in the air catch between the middle and downstream sections, and extending generally upstream past the end of the middle section and generally parallel to the middle section to form a reflow conduit for receiving air flow redirected from the cutting chamber by the air catch through the opening between the middle and downstream sections of the radially expanded section of the housing wall.

The agricultural residue chopper assembly of claim 7, wherein the upstream section of the radially expanded section of the housing wall is substantially concentric to an outer circumference of the cutting volume and the middle section expands tangentially from the substantially concentric upstream section.
9. The agricultural residue chopper assembly of claim 1, wherein the first shear bar is adjustably fixed near the downstream closing of the housing outlet.
10. The agricultural residue chopper assembly of claim 1, wherein the second shear bar is adjustably fixed near the downstream closing of the housing outlet.
11. The agricultural residue chopper assembly of claim 7, wherein the second shear bar extends into the cutting volume.
12. An agricultural harvester machine comprising: a chassis configured for movement on a surface; and a residue chopper comprising: a housing defining a partially enclosed cutting chamber, the housing comprising a housing inlet and a housing outlet with respective sections of housing wall extending between the inlet and outlet; a cutting knife assembly comprising a shaft mounted to rotate in a cutting direction within the cutting chamber about a cutting knife rotation axis extending along a longitudinal direction, the cutting knife assembly comprising a plurality of knives extending from the shaft at respective axial locations along the longitudinal direction, each of the plurality of knives extending from a respective proximal end at the shaft to a respective distal end at a radial distance from the shaft, the radial distance defining an outer radius of a cutting volume; a counterknife assembly comprising one or more counterknives mounted to a counterknife support, the counterknives positioned to extend into the cutting volume at a position, with reference to the cutting direction, downstream from the housing inlet; a first shear bar positioned near a downstream closing of the housing outlet; a second shear bar positioned downstream of the first shear bar near an upstream opening of the housing inlet; and an air catch formed by a radially expanded section of the housing wall between the downstream closing of the housing outlet and the upstream opening of the housing inlet.
13. The agricultural harvester machine of claim 12, further comprising: a threshing and separating system attached to the chassis and configured to deliver crop residue to the residue chopper; and powered wheels configured to move the chassis on the surface.

The agricultural harvester machine of claim 12, wherein the radially expanded section of the housing wall comprises an upstream section extending downstream from near the housing outlet closing to a middle section extending generally towards the opening of the housing inlet, wherein the upstream section of the radially expanded section of the housing wall is substantially concentric to an outer circumference of the cutting volume and the middle section expands tangentially from the substantially concentric upstream section, wherein the radially expanded section of the housing wall further comprises a downstream section extending from near the upstream opening of the housing inlet a distance generally outward from the cutting volume then curving arcuately upstream generally toward the housing outlet, and wherein the middle section of the radially expanded section of the housing wall joins the arcuately curved downstream section to form a continuous radially expanded section of housing wall between the downstream closing of the housing outlet and the upstream opening of the housing inlet.
15. The agricultural harvester machine of claim 12, wherein the radially expanded section of the housing wall comprises an upstream section extending downstream from near the housing outlet closing to a middle section extending generally towards the opening of the housing inlet, wherein the middle section of the radially expanded section of the housing wall ends before reaching a point intersecting a line extending substantially radially from the cutting knife rotation axis through the upstream opening of the housing inlet, wherein the radially expanded section of the housing wall comprises a downstream section extending from near the upstream opening of the housing inlet outward from the cutting volume, curving arcuately around the end of the downstream section to form an opening in the air catch between the middle and downstream sections, and extending generally upstream past the end of the middle section and generally parallel to the middle section to form a reflow conduit for receiving air flow redirected from the cutting chamber by the air catch through the opening between the middle and downstream sections of the radially expanded section of the housing wall.

[0037] A cutting knife assembly 127 includes a shaft 128 that is rotatably mounted within the cutting chamber 126 and is configured to rotate in an operating (cutting) direction 130 about a rotation axis 132 extending along a longitudinal direction. Any suitable drive mechanism may be provided to rotate the shaft 128. For example, the shaft 128 may be driven by a hydraulic motor, an electric motor, or via a power takeoff from an internal combustion engine.
[0038] Cutting knife assembly 127 further comprises a plurality of cutting knives 134 extending from the shaft 128 at respective axial locations along the longitudinal direction of rotation axis 132. Each knife 134 extends generally radially from a respective proximal end 134a to a respective distal end 134b. The proximal end 134a is fixed to the shaft 128, and the distal end 134b is located at a radial distance R from the shaft. The cutting knives 134 may be rigidly fixed to the shaft 128 or connected by pivoting links (i.e., flail-type connections). The radial distance R defines an outer radius of a cylindrical cutting volume 136. The cutting volume 136 extends in the longitudinal direction (i.e., parallel to the rotation axis 132) as a cylindrical shape along the axial length of the shaft 128, or at least the portion of the shaft 128 spanning the knives 134. It will be appreciated that the knives 134 do not literally occupy the entire cutting volume 136, but instead form a general region including the space in the longitudinal direction L between adjacent knives 134.
[0039] The knives 134 are configured to cut crop residue. For example, the leading edge 134c of each knife 134 (i.e., the edge facing in the operating direction 130) may be sharpened, or include serrations, such as shown. The trailing edges 134d also may be sharpened or include serrations, as also shown, which allows the knives 134 to be turned around during service to extend their service life prior to replacement or sharpening.
[0040] The crop residue chopper 116 also includes a counterknife assembly 140 comprising one or more counterknives 148 mounted to a counterknife support 142, the counterknives 148 being positioned to extend into the cutting volume 136 at a position, with reference to the cutting direction 130, downstream from the housing inlet 122 and upstream of the housing outlet 124. The counterknife support 142 is movably mounted relative to the housing 120 outside the cutting chamber 126. The counterknife support 142 in this case is rotatably mounted to the housing 120 by a pivot 144, but in other embodiments, the counterknife support 142 may be mounted to the housing 120 by a parallel linkage, a slider, and so on. The counterknife support 142 is configured to move the counterknife 142 through a predetermined range of motion into and out of the cutting volume 136 through openings (not shown) in the section of the housing wall 120 that extends between the closing 150 of the housing inlet 122 and the opening 152 of the housing outlet 124. The counterknife assembly 140 may be manually operated, or operated by a control system.
[0041] The counterknife 148 may comprise a serrated, straight or curved sharpened edge facing against the operating direction 130, to thereby present a sharp edge towards the incoming crop residue and enhance the overall cutting action of the chopper 116. The counterknife 148 also may be reversible during service to present a fresh sharpened edge against the operating direction, or to present a different type of edge to the operating direction. For example, the shown counterknife 148 may have a serrated edge on one side, and a straight edge on the opposite side, allowing interchangeability to obtain different performance characteristics.
