Abstract
An envelope spreader system includes a chassis having an opening to receive a tire assembly, a primary link including a single elongated member rotatably coupled to the chassis at a first fixed pivot point and extending into the opening from a primary link first end to a primary link second end, a first engaging member coupled to the primary link second end and configured to engage a tire envelope at a location corresponding to the location of the primary link second end, a secondary link including a single elongated member rotatably coupled to the chassis at a second fixed pivot point and extending into the opening from a secondary link first end to a secondary link second end, and a second engaging member coupled to the secondary link second end and configured to engage the tire envelope at a location corresponding to the location of the secondary link second end.
Claims
1. An envelope spreader system comprising: a chassis having an opening configured to receive a tire assembly; a primary link comprising a single elongated member rotatably coupled to the chassis at a first fixed pivot point and extending into the opening from a primary link first end to a primary link second end; a first engaging member coupled to the primary link second end and configured to engage a portion of a tire envelope at a location corresponding to the location of the primary link second end; a secondary link comprising a single elongated member rotatably coupled to the chassis at a second fixed pivot point and extending into the opening from a secondary link first end to a secondary link second end; and a second engaging member coupled to the secondary link second end and configured to engage a portion of the tire envelope at a location corresponding to the location of the secondary link second end.
2. The envelope spreader system of claim 1, further comprising an actuator engaged with the primary link first end and the secondary link first end and configured to rotate the primary link about the first fixed pivot point and to rotate the secondary link about the second fixed pivot point.

The envelope spreader system of claim 1, wherein the first fixed pivot point is positioned at a location between the primary link first end and the primary link second end, and the second fixed pivot point is positioned at a location between the secondary link first end and the secondary link second end.
4. The envelope spreader system of claim 1, wherein the opening in the chassis is configured to receive a tire in an upright orientation.
5. The envelope spreader system of claim 1, wherein the first engaging member is configured to engage the tire envelope on a first side or a second side of the primary link, and the second engaging member is configured to engage the tire envelope on either side of the secondary link.
6. The envelope spreader system of claim 5, wherein the opening in the chassis is configured to receive the tire assembly from a first side or a second side of the chassis.
7. The envelope spreader system of claim 1, further comprising: a tertiary link comprising a single elongated member rotatably coupled to the chassis at the first fixed pivot point and extending into the opening from a tertiary link first end to a tertiary link second end; and a third engaging member coupled to the tertiary link second end and configured to engage a portion of the tire envelope at a location corresponding to the location of the tertiary link second end.

The envelope spreader system of claim 1, further comprising: a tertiary link comprising a single elongated member rotatably coupled to the chassis at a third fixed pivot point and extending into the opening from a tertiary link first end to a tertiary link second end; a third engaging member coupled to the tertiary link second end and configured to engage a portion of the tire envelope at a location corresponding to the location of the tertiary link second end, a fourth link comprising a single elongated member rotatably coupled to the chassis at a fourth fixed pivot point and extending into the opening from a fourth link first end to a fourth link second end; a fourth engaging member coupled to the fourth link second end and configured to engage a portion of the tire envelope at a location corresponding to the location of the fourth link second end; a fifth link comprising a single elongated member rotatably coupled to the chassis at a fifth fixed pivot point and extending into the opening from a fifth link first end to a fifth link second end; and a fifth engaging member coupled to the fifth link second end and configured to engage a portion of the tire envelope at a location corresponding to the location of the fifth link second end, wherein the primary link, the secondary link, the tertiary link, and the fourth link are positionable to permit an annulus to pass through the primary link second end, the secondary link second end, the tertiary link second end, and the fourth link second end.
9. The envelope spreader system of claim 8, further comprising an actuator engaged with the primary link first end, the secondary link first end, the tertiary link first end, the fourth link first end, and the fifth link first end and configured to rotate the primary link about the first fixed pivot point, the secondary link about the second fixed pivot point, the tertiary link about the third fixed pivot point, the fourth link about the fourth fixed pivot point, and the fifth link about the fifth fixed pivot point, wherein the actuator comprises a single piston.
10. The envelope spreader system of claim 9, wherein the primary link, the secondary link, the tertiary link, the fourth link, and the fifth link are coupled together by a plurality of rigid connection members.
11. The envelope spreader system of claim 1, further comprising a rigid connection member coupling the primary link first end to the secondary link first end.
12. The envelope spreader system of claim 11, wherein the rigid connection member is configured to cause the secondary link to rotate when the primary link rotates.
13. A method of spreading a tire envelope, the method comprising: coupling the tire envelope to a first engaging member coupled to a primary link at a primary link distal end, the primary link comprising a single elongated member rotatably coupled to a chassis at a first fixed pivot point, the primary link distal end corresponding to a location of engagement between the first engaging member and the tire envelope; coupling the tire envelope to a second engaging member coupled to a secondary link at a secondary link distal end, the secondary link comprising a single elongated member rotatably coupled to the chassis at a second fixed pivot point, the secondary link distal end corresponding to a location of engagement between the second engaging member and the tire envelope; and stretching the tire envelope by performing operations comprising: rotating the primary link about the first fixed pivot point to move the first engaging member from a first position to a second position; and rotating the secondary link about the second fixed pivot point to move the second engaging member from a third position to a fourth position.
14. The method of claim 13, wherein the primary link and the secondary link are rotated by actuating a linear actuator with a single piston.
15. The method of claim 13, further comprising suspending a tire assembly from a hook and moving the tire assembly into the tire envelope using the hook.
16. The method of claim 15, wherein moving the tire assembly into the tire envelope comprises moving the hook between the first engaging member and the second engaging member.
17. The method of claim 15, further comprising moving the tire assembly and the tire envelope out of the chassis, wherein the hook moves in the same direction to move the tire assembly into the tire envelope and to move the tire assembly and the tire envelope out of the chassis.
18. The method of claim 13, further comprising coupling the tire envelope to a third engaging member coupled to a tertiary link at a tertiary link distal end, the tertiary link comprising a single elongated member rotatably coupled to the chassis at the first fixed pivot point, the tertiary link distal end corresponding to a location of engagement between the third engaging member and the tire envelope, wherein stretching the tire envelope further comprises rotating the tertiary link about the first fixed pivot point to move the third engaging member from a fifth position to a sixth position.
19. The method of claim 18, wherein stretching the tire envelope comprises rotating the primary link and the tertiary link in opposite directions.
20. The method of claim 13, wherein the primary link and the secondary link are coupled by a rigid connection member, and rotating the secondary link about the second fixed pivot point is caused by the rotation of the primary link.

[0020] Following below are more detailed descriptions of various concepts related to, and implementations of, a system for enveloping a retreaded tire. The various concepts introduced above and discussed in greater detail below may be implemented in any of a number of ways, as the described concepts are not limited to any particular manner of implementation. Examples of specific implementations and applications are provided primarily for illustrative purposes.
I. Overview
[0021] Tires are used in various applications and under a variety of operational conditions. Some tires may be designed to withstand the forces of a landing aircraft. Some tires may be designed to provide extra grip on surfaces covered in snow and ice. Some tires may be manufactured to be more suited to be repairable and retreaded.
[0022] Retread tires are used in applications ranging from aircraft landing gear to long-haul tractor-trailers. It is desirable to decrease the time for a retreaded process to improve production. An exemplary envelope spreader system for enveloping a retreaded tire assembly as set forth according to various non-limiting embodiments described herein allows the retreaded tire assembly to pass through the system of enveloping once the retreaded tire assembly is placed within the flexible rubber envelope.
[0023] Various embodiments of the envelope spreader system may provide certain technical advantages, including but not limited to 1) expediting a retreading process by facilitating the retread tire assembly to pass through the envelope spreader system after being placed within a flexible rubber envelope, 2) removing specific travel paths to a system for enveloping, 3) providing a system which does not require an operator to move the system from the travel path of the retreaded tire assembly, and 4) providing a system which is able to receive a retreaded tire assembly from either end of the system. The exemplary non-limiting embodiments having such effects are described in more detail below.
II. Terms
[0024] As used herein, the term precured refers to a material that is cured. Conversely, uncured refers to materials that are in their raw form and have not been cured. For example, curing an uncured material results in a cured or precured material.
[0025] As used herein, the term precured tire tread refers to a tire tread or build-up (e.g., precured product having no tread pattern thereon; blank; slick) that is separate from (e.g., not cured to) a tire casing. Once a precured tire tread has been cured to a tire casing, the precured tire tread becomes a tire tread, and the combination of the precured tread cured to the tire casing forms a tire. The precured tire tread may take the form of a strip, oval, circle, ring, or similar shape.
[0026] As used herein, the term retreaded tire assembly refers to a pre-cured tread (PCT) assembly applied to a tire casing with an uncured adhesive interposed between the mating surfaces. The retreaded tire assembly may be ready to be positioned within an envelope for curing. A tire may be formed of a retreaded tire assembly that has been cured.
III. Overview of Envelope Spreader System

The plurality of links 114 are formed of steel or any other similar alloy. The plurality of links 114 are rotatably coupled to the chassis 102 and extend into the opening 110. In some embodiments, the plurality of links 114 are rotatably coupled to the first chassis side 106. In some embodiments, the plurality of links 114 are rotatably coupled to the second chassis side 108. In some embodiments, the plurality of links 114 are coupled to the first chassis side 106 and the second chassis side 108, and are positioned between the first chassis side 106 and the second chassis side 108.
