    Abstract

    A sliding member is provided with a sliding film at least on a surface of the sliding member. The sliding film contains copper-based alloy particles including titanium and has a titanium oxide layer in part of an interface between the particles forming the sliding film. The titanium content of the copper-based alloy particles is 3.5 mass % or more and 11.0 mass % or less. The sliding member is part of an internal combustion engine.

    Claims

    1. A sliding member comprising: a sliding film at least on a surface thereof, wherein the sliding film contains copper-based alloy particles including titanium and has a titanium oxide layer at part of the interface between the particles forming the sliding film, and a titanium content of the copper-based alloy particles is 3.5 mass % or more and 11.0 mass % or less.

    3. The sliding member according to claim 1, wherein the titanium content of the copper-based alloy particles is 3.5 mass % or more and 9.0 mass % or less.

    4. The sliding member according to claim 1, wherein the copper-based alloy particles contain precipitates consisting of copper and titanium.

    6. The sliding member according to claim 1, wherein the sliding film contains metal particles containing at least one metal selected from a group consisting of iron, cobalt, molybdenum, chromium and nickel, and/or ceramic particles.

    7. The sliding member according to claim 1, wherein the porosity in a cross section of the sliding film is 4 area % or less.

    8. The sliding member according to claim 1, wherein the sliding film has at least one of amorphous substance and nanocrystals at interfaces between particles forming the sliding film.

    9. The sliding member according to claim 1, comprising a base material, wherein the sliding film is formed on the base material.

    10. The sliding member according to claim 9, wherein the sliding film is formed by spraying particles that make up the sliding film onto the base material, which deform upon being sprayed.

    11. An internal combustion engine comprising the sliding member according to claim 1.

    DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS

    [0015] The sliding member and internal combustion engine of the present invention are described in detail below with reference to the drawings. The dimensional ratios in the drawings cited below may be exaggerated for explanatory purposes and may differ from actual ratios.

    First Embodiment

    [0016] As shown in FIG. 1, a sliding member 1 in the first embodiment is provided with a base material 10 and a sliding film 20 formed on a surface of the base material 10. The sliding film 20 includes copper-based alloy particles 21 containing titanium as particles constituting the sliding film 20 and has a titanium oxide layer 23 at part of the interface 20a between the particles constituting the sliding film 20. The sliding film 20 also has voids 20b. It should be noted that the surface 20c of the sliding film 20 is, of course, a sliding surface.

    [0017] In the present invention, the term copper-based alloy refers to an alloy containing copper as the main component, the content of which is the highest in mass % among all components. The same applies to iron-based alloys, cobalt-based alloys, molybdenum-based alloys, chromium-based alloys, and nickel-based alloys, each alloy containing its respective metal as the main component, the content of which is highest in mass % among all components.

    [0018] Further, in the present invention, the titanium oxide layer is formed due to the oxidation of titanium contained in copper-based alloy particles present near the surface of the titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles that easily comes into contact with an oxidizing atmosphere such as air. Therefore, copper-based alloy particles containing titanium already have a titanium oxide layer on the surface at the stage of the obtained raw material particles.

    [0019] The advantages of the present embodiment will now be described. According to the embodiment, the sliding film 20 includes copper-based alloy particles 21 containing titanium and has the titanium oxide layer 23 at part of the interface 20a between the particles forming the sliding film 20, and is therefore less likely to soften even at high temperatures, thereby providing excellent high-temperature wear resistance.

    [0020] Until now, when particles were cold-sprayed onto a base material to form a sliding film on the base material, it was preferable that an oxide film that formed on the particle surface be thin or absent, and that the particles should be plastically deformed and the oxide film destroyed when the particles were cold-sprayed onto the base material, thereby allowing the particles to metallurgically bond to each other.

    [0021] In contrast, in the present invention, an oxide film is intentionally formed on the particle surface by incorporating titanium, a readily oxidizable metal, into copper. When such titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles are used as raw material particles for cold spray, the relatively soft copper alloy particles plastically deform when cold-sprayed onto the base material, and part of the oxide film is destroyed, allowing the alloy particles to metallurgically bond to each other, while part of the oxide film remains intact. Such oxide films have been thought to hinder the wear resistance improvement effect, but it has been found that, on the contrary, an excellent wear resistance improvement effect can be exhibited at high temperatures.

    [0022] The currently presumed mechanism for improving high-temperature wear resistance in sliding members will now be explained in detail.

    [0023] For example, when a sliding film is formed with titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles, the titanium oxide layer that exists at part of the interface between the particles forming the sliding film can be distributed more uniformly in the sliding film compared to the hard particles in the case of a sliding film formed of copper-based alloy particles and hard particles. Therefore, such a titanium oxide layer tends to effectively exhibit a pinning effect against plastic flow in the sliding film, and it is thought to be able to suppress the adhesion of titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles and improve the high-temperature wear resistance of the sliding member.

    [0024] Further, for example, the above-mentioned titanium oxide layer can be more easily included in larger amounts in the sliding film compared to precipitates contained in copper alloy particles when the sliding film is formed with precipitation-hardened copper alloy particles. Therefore, such a titanium oxide layer tends to effectively exhibit a pinning effect against plastic flow in the sliding film, and is also thought to be able to suppress adhesion of titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles and improve the high-temperature wear resistance of the sliding member.

    [0025] Moreover, for example, when the sliding member slides, the above-mentioned titanium oxide layer at the interface between particles forming the sliding film tends to alleviate the stress applied to the titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles. Therefore, such a titanium oxide layer tends to suppress the adhesion of titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles and is also thought to be able to enhance the high-temperature wear resistance of the sliding member.

    [0026] However, it is sufficient if the sliding member of the present invention has the above-mentioned configuration (for example, see paragraph 0015), and it goes without saying that if similar effects are obtained by mechanisms other than those described above, those mechanisms are included within the scope of the present invention.

    [0027] Further, according to the present embodiment, the titanium oxide itself forming the titanium oxide layer can act as a solid lubricant on the surface side of the sliding film, enhancing the sliding properties of the sliding member, and hence, the wear resistance.

    [0029] The above-mentioned base material is not particularly limited, and metals conventionally employed for sliding members of internal combustion engines can be used, for example, but aluminum alloys are preferable due to their high thermal conductivity.

Further, if the titanium content in the copper-based alloy particles exceeds 15.0 mass %, the titanium oxide layer may be formed over the entire interface between the particles constituting the sliding film.

Such a titanium oxide layer appears linear in a cross section of the sliding film. The length of the linear titanium oxide layer depends on the size of the titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles, but is preferably 10 m or more and 40 m or less, and more preferably 15 m or more and 35 m or less. The width of the linear titanium oxide layer is preferably 0.05 m or more and 2 m or less, and more preferably 0.1 m or more and 1 m or less. If the length of the titanium oxide layer is less than 10 m or the width is less than 0.05 m, the effect of improving high-temperature wear resistance may be attenuated. If the length of the titanium oxide layer exceeds 40 m or the width exceeds 2 m, it may not be possible to form the desired sliding film with good yield.

    Second Embodiment

    Method for Manufacturing the Sliding Member

    [0058] The above-mentioned sliding member can be produced by forming a sliding film on a base material surface, for example, by cold spraying raw material particles containing the above-mentioned titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles and the above-mentioned metal particles and ceramic particles, which have been added as needed, onto the base material surface in an unmelted state.

    [0059] In the titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles in the raw material particles, it is preferable that the oxygen content, including the titanium oxide layer on the particle surface, be 0.1 mass % or more and 2.0 mass % or less, and more preferably 0.25 mass % or more and 0.8 mass % or less. If the oxygen content in the titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles in the raw material particles is less than 0.1 mass %, it may not be possible to form the desired sliding film with good yield. On the other hand, if the oxygen content in the titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles in the raw material particles exceeds 2.0 mass %, it becomes difficult to manufacture the titanium-containing copper-based alloy particles themselves.

More specifically, this figure is a partial cross section schematically illustrating a valve train mechanism that includes an engine valve. The valve stem 43A of the engine valve 43 passes through the valve guide 45, which is press-fitted into the cylinder head 46 side, and is installed while being lubricated with oil. In addition, the valve face 43B of the engine valve 43, which corresponds to the opening and closing valve portion of the combustion chamber, not shown, is in contact or non-contact with the valve seat 46A in the cylinder head 46 during operation. Although FIG. 3 shows the exhaust port 47 side, the sliding member of the present invention can also be applied to the intake port side, not shown.

    [0075] A sliding member provided with the above-mentioned sliding film, for example, a sliding member (1 or 2) of the first or second embodiment described above, is applied to the sliding surface 46a of the valve seat 46A of the engine valve in the cylinder head, which is the sliding part of the cylinder head and engine valve. It is thereby possible to improve the high-temperature wear resistance of the internal combustion engine. Further, the internal combustion engine of the present invention makes it possible to eliminate press-fit valve seats. As a result, greater flexibility can be achieved with respect to the shape of the exhaust and intake ports and to enlarging the diameter of engine valves, thereby making it possible to improve fuel efficiency, power output, torque, etc., of the engine.

    EXAMPLES

    [0076] The present invention will be described in further detail below with reference to examples, but the present invention is not limited to these examples.

    Comparative Example 1

    [0077] Using the nickel- and silicon-containing copper-based alloy particles shown in Table 1 (composition: Cu-3Ni-0.7Si, particle size (D.sub.50): 32.2 m) as raw material particles, cold spraying was performed under the following conditions to form a sliding film on the surface of an aluminum alloy base material to obtain the sliding member of this example. For the formation of the sliding film on the surface of the aluminum alloy base material for a one-piece valve seat tapping wear test, a sliding film with a thickness of 0.4 to 0.5 mm was formed on the base material and then machined for finishing into the shape of a valve seat of an engine valve in an actual cylinder head. The particle size of the raw material particles (D.sub.50, median diameter) was measured as the diameter at 50% cumulative frequency of the volume distribution measured by the laser diffraction/scattering method using a particle size distribution measuring device, Microtrac MT3000EXII manufactured by Microtrac Bell Co., Ltd. Therefore, from Table 1, it can be seen that the sliding members of Examples 1-4, which fall within the scope of the present invention and do not contain any single-metal particles, alloy particles, or ceramic particles, have better high-temperature wear resistance compared to the sliding members of Comparative Examples 1-4, which are outside the scope of the present invention and do not contain any single-metal particles, alloy particles, or ceramic particles. Further, from Table 1, it can be seen that the sliding member of Example 5, which contains alloy particles and falls within the scope of the present invention, has better high-temperature wear resistance compared to the sliding members of Comparative Examples 5 and 6, which contain alloy particles and are outside the scope of the present invention.
